A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND
O'Connor, the author of “A Good Man is Hard to Find” tells his breath-taking story skillfully and integrating various stylistic and literary devices. Grandma (Bailey’s mother) unintentionally leads her family to danger causing the rather unfortunate ordeals that occur. O'Connor portrays Grandma as being ‘good' though she is responsible for her family's death by misleading them to the wrong way. The author has greatly focused on how unfair life can be. Wrong choices may present other malicious individuals an opportunity to satisfy their evil desires. People no longer care for each other, we have turned into living in a ‘man eat man society.' There has been rising hatred, greed, murder and increased crime among individuals

O'Connor believes that people have embraced hatred and no one cares about the other person’s welfare. Grandma claims that people are not as nice as they used to be a long time ago "Certainly people are not as nice as the used to be." Grandma, however, claims that Red Sam was a good man when he does a good action against some boys "Because you are a good man!" says Grandma. Red Sammy believes that nowadays it is almost impossible to find a good man. He remembers the old days that there was security but not anymore, “A good man is hard to find. Everything is getting terrible. I remember the days you could go off and leave your screen door unlatched. Not no more" This shows how the world had changed over time. People had ignored their earlier principles and care for one another and had allowed animosity to get in their path. The author depicts irony when grandma is succumbed by a difficult situation and refers Misfit as a good man despite her stand that it was nowadays difficult to find a good man “I know you are a good man at heart. I can just look and tell.” This is only a futile an attempt to save her life and that of her
If you were to ask someone what their definition of a happy life would be, they would probably give you an answer like, “having fun.” This is completely untrue in Aristotle’s terms. According to Aristotle, for a man to lead a happy life he must learn each of the intellectual virtues, and practice each of the moral virtues throughout his life. These moral virtues are justice, courage, temperance, magnificence, magnanimity, liberality, gentleness, prudence, and wisdom. With so many virtues to constantly abide by, a man cannot know if he has led a happy life until his life is nearly finished. In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’ Connor, the question is
The final comment of the story seams to be showing a change in misfits' life. Misfit seams to be thinking about goodness and probably thinking that evil is not the answer to the problems in his life. The story shows us that a lot of people are evil, but when they are in trouble they will think of god, as grandma did in the story. At the end of the story Misfit regrets killing grandma, and says that "she would have been a good woman if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life. (O' Connor 318)." The story is trying to tell us that do not flight all the time and be evil, because you never know what may happen to one. O' Connor is trying to tell us that every man has good and evil in him, but some time we only see one side of them and forget that they have another side as well. The final comment of the story implies that even though misfit seams evil, there still might be some goodness in him. Misfit has gone thorough so many challenges in his life that have made him this way, because he has no faith.
The story I picked is from O’Connor “A Good Man is Hard to Find. I chose this story because of previous stories that O’Connor wrote were fascinating such as “Good Country People.” The titles she uses for her short stories just interest you to read them and figure out what is the meaning behind the title. When I first saw the title I assumed it to be a love story of a young woman looking for a good man to marry after many failed attempts to find him. After you read the story, you will be able to tell I was way off. The thesis to “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is based on selfish characters who believe their way of living or thought is right and could not be questioned but learned the hard way but while ending in violence.
This paper will present a rhetorical context for the use of violence in the short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” as she presented in her essay “The Element of Suspense.” The form of classical tragedy in this story will also be analyzed from the critical theories of Aristotle and Longinus. Tolstoy will be used to examine the use Christian symbolism. Nietzsche will provide a more well-rounded universal conclusion to the uses of tragedy and spiritual elements in this classic story.
Compare and Contrast: A Good Man Is Hard To Find and Where Have You Been, Where Are You Going
Flannery O'Connor is an influential voice in American literature. It is the headlight of American literature, also the master of the short stories. Writer of the southern United States, we call her style the "Southern Gothic" intimately tied to its region and its grotesque characters. For me O'Connor's writings also reflect her Catholic faith, in considering her moral values. Deeply influenced by good and evil, the theme of redemption through grace and suffering, the work of Flannery O'Connor takes us to the heart of darkness of humanity. In Flannery O'Connor we find another key figure: the one of the prophet, the marginal, the one that is different from "brave people" and as such is the theme of "grotesque". The "grotesque" in Flannery
In the short story essay, I will talk about two stories. The first one is “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor. The article that I will talk about is “ O’Connor’s A Good Man Is Hard To Find” by Nancy L Nester. Before I read the critic’s view, I focus on their trip because the author talks a lot of the plan of their trip. For example, the grandmother did not want to go to Florida. She wants to east Tennessee in the begin. I think they will talk more details in the story. However, after I read the critic’s view. Nancy has different opinion than me. He thinks the article of climax is the grandmother. In the next paragraph, I will talk about how do I think the article “O’ Connor’s A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Nancy L Nester.
‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’ by Flannery O’Connor In this short story by Flannery O’Connor, there are many characters that each bring a certain tone and mood to the story. The grandmother brings a slightly softer tone, the kids bring a playful, sassy tone, and the Misfit and his gang bring a really dark tone. Each character comes together to bring the story to the great, exciting story that it is.
Some people who behave cruelly and brutally can be rehabilitated and eventually display ‘good’ qualities such as empathy and kindness. " ( Taylor, "The Real Meaning of 'Good' And 'Evil"). Take the grandmother, she believes she is a good person, O'Connor carefully allows her to realize that all people are not good, even if you wish them to be. Red Sammy, for instance seems to be a normal restaurant owner, but he seemingly puts all of the restaurant work on his wife. "Red Sam came in and told his wife to quit lounging on the counter and hurry up with these people's order." (O'Connor, "A Good Man Is Hard to Find"). Contrastingly, one cannot be all bad, for example The Misfit. The Misfit is clearly evil, however he also is polite in his speaking and manners towards a self-proclaimed
The story dives deeper than just characters with protagonist with action being thrown at them and deciding in the critical moments what to do, it delves into the need for religion and what exactly a good person is, in society, in religion, and in God’s eyes. O’Connor uses the dialogue and mannerism’s between the grandmother and the misfit to comment on mankind’s sinful state, God’s grace and the need for salvation. The discourse begins when the misfit and his friends arrive to find them in the ditch after having a wreck. Prior to this, the grandmother has been rambling on about how awful the times were and that a good man was hard to
In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery 0’Connor, a southern family planning a road trip to Florida portrays the hypocrisy of the society through their actions and dialogues. Major question that rose in the story was what is considered good and how there aren’t enough good men left in the world.” A social science major with several courses in English, O’Connor is remembered by her classmates as obviously gifted but extremely shy. Her closest friends recall her sly humor, her disdain for mediocrity and her often merciless attacks on affection and triviality.” (Gordon 1) The author, Flannery O’Connor is recognized in her work in southern gothic literature which had grotesque
In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” the title “good” is brought into question as a story that presents the moral complications of an old woman and a convict unfolds in a rather elaborate net of events. The old woman, a grandmother, who believes she’s superior to others by being a “lady” manages to press judgment on a man, the convict, who lacks the lenience in moral belief to accept criticism due to his own powerful convections and self-awareness. He’s a man with a different set of morals that seem to be carefully considered through experience and reflection, the question then becomes who considers themselves to be “good” and how does the meaning of “good” change as the main characters of this complicated tale interact? In the beginning of the story the grandmother is worried about taking a trip to Florida, because the Misfit, an escaped convict is headed there.
Danger can sometimes be unavoidable. If one is unaware of the facts it can result in heavy consequences. In one of the most famous southern gothic literature “A Good Man Is Hard to find” by Flannery O’Connor, the author gives a tour of how a normal family trip can turn into a nightmare for the entire family and how each and every member of the family meet their tragic fate. The story portraits how a family’s lack of unity can lead to different thoughts and opinion and bring unwanted circumstances. As the story goes along, couple of questions arises in the mind of readers. For example what would have happened if the family had strong unity? If the grandmother wasn’t so intrusive with the other family member could everyone have reached the destination safely? Why was it the misfit that appeared right after the accident? If the misfit believed in Jesus would he have killed the family mercilessly? Most of these questions gets answered as the story goes on.
The Flannery O’Connor story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” illustrates a parallel between the Misfit and the grandmother, showing that good and evil are not mutually exclusive in an individual. The grandmother and the Misfit display a flowing, changing state of character, representative of this shift. Flannery O’Connor develops these two characters on the surface as simply being a good person and a bad person. However, there is more to each character than the surface level, as they exhibit traits that wouldn’t ordinarily seem fitting in regards to what would be expected. It is this complexity in human characteristics that O’Connor takes the time to develop and show the audience the depth of humanity.
An intricately written short story titled “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” explores the perspectives of various kinds of people because its author, Flannery O’Connor, believes that it is better to comprehend a story when it is experienced. Looking through the eyes of the characters is an effective way to know how they understand certain things.
