The story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, anticipates the audience to recognize a male as the focus of the story but instead there are two main characters. Flannery O’Connor focuses her story on the grandmother and The Misfit as the two main characters. It is throughout her story and juxtaposition of the characters that the author conveys conflicting moral codes and faith between The Misfit’s principles triumphing over the grandmother’s principles. The literary device that expresses the theme of the individual’s opposing values is the use of indirect characterization in contrasting differences of appearance, speech and actions.

“The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe and “Man in the Well” by Ira Sher are two short stories that are alike in many ways as well as different. Both stories share the theme of confinement which is central to the stories and a trapped victim who is tricked many times. Along with their similarities, the short stories also have differences such as the mindset of the perpetrator and the social classes within which the stories are set.

To begin with, Montresor taking revenge on Fortunato is quite evil. When Montresor trick Fortunato down to the cellar by using Fortunato’s ego and taste in wine it is very cool and calculating. In the text Montresor says, “ As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchesi. If anyone has a critical turn, it is he. He will tell me--.” (Montresor 58) This plays off of Fortunato ego saying somebody else had a better taste in wine then he did. In like manner, Montresor was very happy and excited to see Fortunato during carnival. Which is just an act to lure Fortunato to the catacombs. Montresor says in his head, “ I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.” (Montresor57) Furthermore, Montresor offers many times for Fortunato to turn back because of the cold or of his health. The short story states, “ Come sais Montresor, we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was.” This is cruel because once Fortunato gets to the bottom of the catacombs he will never get to turn back.

Working Thesis: In “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, O’Connor uses the corrupt, manipulative character of the grandmother, as well as the story’s plot and theme in order to emphasize the flaws of the church and the need for grace.

Exploring the idea that all men are born sinners, O’Connor demonstrates immoral indulgences entertained by various characters. Readers are introduced to grandmother, an elderly woman whose consistent unscrupulous behavior exhibits her inner motives. Grandmother uses subtle, indirect confrontation to get her way until she is faced with The Misfit, a runaway criminal who believes that crime is a justifiable. In “A Good Man Is Hard To Find,” Flannery O’Connor uses characterization to display a loss of morals, imagery to portray evil in society, and symbolism to emphasize the struggle of obtaining grace to prove how life is nihilistic without religion.

Throughout the short story, Montresor appears to be murderous and mentally insane. As Montresor continues to tell his story, the reader learns that Montresor is not only a murder and insane, but he is a narcissist as well. Montresor displays the characteristics for this to be true. When Montresor decided to take revenge on Fortunato, he was persistent in doing it himself for his own satisfaction. As his plan began to go along perfectly, he was very pleased with himself. In addition, the cause for Montresor’s revenge plan was because of an insult. The death of Fortunato was not justifiable by his actions. It was merely a prize for Montresor

The choice of language and themes in these two stories are influenced by the historical context during which the works were written. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” emphasizes on the ‘so-called faithful’ as hypocrites and liars that tainted the religious belief in the mid-20th Century. “The Tell-Tale Heart” on the other hand contains themes on madness, superstition, and elements of guilt, which trace their origin to the American Gothic Literature that existed in the early 19th Century.

Similarly, the grandmother, one of the central character in “a good man is hard to find”, believes the misfit’s conscience did not quite go out of him. Although the grandmother tells the Misfit that he is good and won’t kill woman couple of times and she tries to persuade the misfit not to kill her, the grandmother and her family murdered by the inhumane and deadly man in the end of the story. There is the doubt that trust is one of the most important element to affect this story.

The story revolves around a cynical grandmother and how her unconventional attitude and habits set the stage for an interesting turn of events. Through manipulative antics, a prejudice character and an ironic story line, author Flannery O’Conner creates a captivating tale that shines a lights on readers’ own moral codes. The author does this by making an example of a woman completely unaware of her own immoral acts.

“A Good Man Is Hard To Find ”, is a short story about a man and his family. The story focuses on what happens the family when they are challenged by fate. The grandmother plays the biggest role in the story. She is responsible for the family’s fate because she intervened with their original plans. Had she not persisted on having her way, the story’s outcome would be different. In the story the grandmother has a controlling personality, the family cannot avoid their fate, and the ending provides a sense of closure.
