He installed a policy of rigid discipline, strengthened defenses, and encouraged farming with his order that all must work or face starvation. Smith had settlers dig the first well inside the fort (and Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists have found that well and the many unique artifacts it held when it became a trash pit). Smith ordered the repair of many buildings and the expansion of the fort into a five-sided structure, which archaeologists have also traced. Smith also led the first English explorations of the Chesapeake Bay and was almost killed by a ray on the first of the two expeditions. Smith’s strong leadership helped the colony survive and grow but also made him enemies within the fort. When he was sleeping in a boat in the river on night, Smith was badly injured from a gunpowder explosion. Smith went back to England to get treated in October 1609 and he never made it back to

“Simon Peter asked him, ‘Lord, where are you going?’ Jesus replied, ‘Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later. Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Flacks tells the journey of scientific advancement in both a legal advancement capacity as well as an ethical advancement capacity. As if what I could only imagine being and African American woman in the 1950’s in Baltimore City isn’t hard and complicated enough; being and African American woman and seeking medical treatment without knowledge of the sickness without a voice or understanding of the gravity of the situation must be an excruciating experience and was for Henrietta Lacks and her family.

John Lewis was often called one of the most courageous persons of the Civil Rights Movement, and was known to be an influential leader. “John Lewis dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing human liberties, and building what he calls The Beloved Community in America,” (Lewis 1). He was born into a family of sharecroppers during the time when African Americans were subjected to segregation. Throughout his lifetime he has played a key role in trying to end legalized racial segregation. "As a young man I tasted the bitter fruits of segregation and racial discrimination, and I didn’t like it. I used to ask my parents, my grandparents, and my great grandparents, ‘Why segregation? Why racial discrimination?’ And they would say, ‘That’s the way it is. Don’t get in trouble…’ But when I heard the words of Dr.
Jonathan Winthrop was elected governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony even before they set sail to New England. He along with a thousand of his fellow Puritans set sail and Winthrop had a twist to the normal way things were done. He actually had the Massachusetts Bay Colony with him. This would give this group freedom from any members of the Massachusetts Bay Company that remained in England.
Many leaders past and present in society have influenced the development of Army leadership. One of the most influential leaders is James Earl Rudder. Rudder enlisted in the U.S. military in 1932 as a commissioned officer in the Army Reserves right after completing his degree in industrial education from Texas A&M. In 1933, Rudder became a teacher and taught football at Brady High School later becoming a football coach and teacher at Tarleton Agricultural College. Rudder married Margaret Williamson in June 1937 whom he had five children. Rudder was called to active duty in 1941, approximately two years after the start of World War II (WWII). In 1943 as a Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Rudder took command of Second Ranger Battalion, later named Rudder’s Rangers (Todd IV & Knape, 2010).

The letter from Richard Frethorne to his parents, shows the terrible condition the English settlers were in during the early settlement of Virginia. Every settler was dying of a disease as well as starvation. Even strong young men like Frethrone had nothing to eat but pease and lobollie. The further I read the letter, the more desperate the writer wanted his parents or at least for them to send him supplies. By the second letter, he admits that he did not know that his eyes could hold so much water. Not only is Frethrone slowly dying but he is like everyone else in constant fear that of the natives attacking. I found the letter very interesting, because not only was a personal account but it also the writer's loneliness, desperation and strong desire to be in England. Even though Frethrone is dying he still remembers his family and wishes them good health as his slowly deterates.

Born in January of 1580 in Lincolnshire, England, started out as an apprentice to a merchant before later joining the English army. During his military career he was captured during a movement in Hungary against the Turks. After being enslaved for a time he was sent to serve a mistress for awhile before being sent again on to the mistress's brother. John, in turn of this harsh treatment, ended up killing the man he was working for and escaped to England a short time later (early 1600s).

Progress is key to living life, but if one is advancing through life with the motivation of revenge, then, in actuality, he or she is truly regressing. Revenge is an extremely corruptive trait. It causes people to do uncharacteristic things that normally would not be done. The perception of right and wrong is blurred and one takes inadvertent actions that may cost friendships, possessions, and even lives. Revenge is often a major motivating factor in the characters that are in the works written during the Dark Romanticism period. One of the most celebrated and influential American authors in history, Herman Melville, was born on August 1, 1819; his reputation was not quite
