Homelessness is the most important public policy issue to me because it is a serious problem in New York City. In recent years, homelessness in New York City has reached the highest levels since the Great Depression. The number of homeless peoples in the city is constantly growing. In fact, the number of homeless New Yorkers sleeping each night in municipal shelters is now 85 percent higher than it was ten years ago. The mayor worked hard to solve the issue and had success to a certain extent. For instance, according to the Wall Street Journal, city shelters have about 15,000 violations currently on the books, compared with 25,000 at the beginning of the year. Therefore, temporary solutions like shelters fail to solve the issue of homelessness. As a result, when homeless individuals are unable get shelters, they move to city parks, streets and the subway. Thus, they are forced to live in unhealthy and inhumane conditions. Furthermore, this greatly impacts lives of average New Yorkers because the trains and the street are often dirty and smelly. I believe that the main causes of homelessness are low minimum wages and lack of affordable housing. One reason to why the issue is very important to me is that mostly minorities are affected by homelessness. In fact, Approximately 58 percent of New York City homeless shelter residents are African-American, 31 percent are Latino, 7 percent are white, less than 1 percent are Asian-American, and 3 percent are of unknown
