Homeless people add to the problem of safety concern in cities. Especially for college students who have to constantly walk past these people on an hourly basis. Homeless people are known for begging for money on the streets. They are also known for harassing people for money. For example, their was a homeless man who asked a group of girls for money, and when they refused, the man got upset. He began to yell, “you stupid hoes,” at the girls as the fearfully walked away. Homeless people can sometimes make people fear for their lives because they are so desperate for money they can do anything for it. Homeless people have become a major issue facing cities today for two reasons. First they add to the pollution problem in cities and they
Homelessness is an issue in American society today that affects anywhere from 800,000 to 3.5 million people. There are a substantial amount of people that are without shelter, food, or employment, and there are numerous other people affected by poverty and homelessness. People living in nearly every city in the United States are affected by homelessness due to the large amounts of homeless individuals living on the streets and begging for money, food, and other necessities. The issue of homelessness has been a constant problem since the conquering of the New World, and soup kitchens and homeless shelters have not been able to fully end homelessness. Especially today, with a lack of affordable housing and high unemployment rates, homelessness is prevalent.
“One diverse population that has continued to increase over the quarter of a century is composed of people who are homeless” (Baggerly & Zalaquett, 2006, p.155). Homelessness has become a growing problem in society because more and more people are finding themselves to be homeless and not knowing where to turn. Many people do not
There are many reasons behind the homelessness of the people such as unemployment, poverty, lack of resources, mental sickness, physically injured, addiction issues and a lot more then these. It has many effects on the person without a place to stay. The important of all is that their health is completely comprised as they have been living in unhygienic environment which can lead to a lot of health issues in the future for them. Homeless individuals are more prone to diseases, such as cardio-respiratory diseases, skin diseases, and tuberculosis. However, people think that homelessness of a person does not affect them in any way. But that’s completely
The homeless are the epitome of vulnerable. Alone, defenseless, and exposed. A person being alone and on the streets can begin to develop mental issues. They have no friends/family to talk to and confide in. A person who is already weak from the homeless lifestyle can be attacked by anyone; other homeless people fighting for their life or the unjust people of this world. This could leave them injured without aid. The world can be a harsh place, and being exposed to the weather can be the worst factor. The summers can be boiling hot and the winters cold as
Homelessness has become an evolving epidemic of our time, and the health implications associated with being homeless makes it that much worse. Homeless people are at major risk for premature death and a wide range of health problems such as HIV, skin blemishes, and much more. It is very difficult for homeless people to fix their health issues due to the difficulty of accessing health care possibly because of missing health cards, or simply because of the stigma placed on them when they enter a public facility. Whatever the problem may be that is forcing more people to become homeless, it must be solved, and quickly before our world turns into a travesty.
Homelessness is defined as the situation of an individual or family without stable, permanent, appropriate housing, or the immediate prospect, means, and ability of acquiring it. It is the result of systemic or societal barriers, a lack of affordable and appropriate housing, the individual/household’s financial, mental, cognitive, behavioral or physical challenges, and/or racism and discrimination. Most people do not choose to be homeless, and the experience is generally negative, unpleasant, stressful and distressing6. Homelessness is a problem that affects every Canadian town or city, and is one that is dealt with using a variety of different methods.
Homelessness became a huge problem in everywhere especially in the USA. Most people heard homeless people, and they saw homeless people in the streets, markets, or bridges. Most people never try to understand why there is much homelessness. Most people do not know any facts about them seem the truth of homelessness, the state of homelessness in the United States, and the effect on people from homelessness.
To begin, homelessness contaminates our city and spreads diseases like Hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS of sexually transmitted infections, virus and Tuberculosis. For example, when the unhoused go to the public bathroom, sometimes they do not clean themselves or wash their hands. During, the homeless pass it on to their neighbors or other living creatures and spread or contaminate with different types of diseases. Homeless contaminate our city by littering on the ground with plastic, foil, and other types of things that contaminate. Based on what I have seen, one example is when I go down to the Santa Ana Public Library my mom, sister, and I see that there are various amounts of trash on the ground. To include, when my family and I pass through the Angels Stadium in Anaheim I see that there are numerous homeless people that are contaminating our environment with plenty of diseases. To add, in the short story ¨What do Fish Have to do With Anything¨ by Avi, it states that ¨his matted, streaky gray hair hung like a ragged curtain over his dirty face”when describing the homeless man. As a matter of fact, the author states, his shoes were torn; he had rough hands that lay upon his knees; and his hand was palm up. No one seemed to pay him any attention and he begs for money. Because he is filthy, most likely he is carrying bacteria that may cause diseases. In my community, near the riverbed you can tell that the homeless leave their feces
Over the years Los Angeles has had the highest number of homeless people; this situation has been highly overlooked by media and political attention. Cities in many parts of the world may be known as centers for poverty whether if it 's a developed or developing country. No city, state, or country is prone to homelessness. Los Angeles in particular is an entry point for many immigrants who come to look for jobs. The intentions are not to cause there to be a vulnerability to poverty but to try to make a living some how. “Skid Row homeless population originates in South LA – where services and shelters lack resource adequacy and unemployment rates are high among adult men – and policy discussions rarely focus on this trend” (Howard, 4). Los Angeles Skid Row, is known to have the heaviest homeless population compared to other cities. Los Angeles does provide some homeless services like shelter and low-cost housing options for the poor but one of the issues that many homeless people come across is the lack of healthcare. Everyone can suffer from physical and mental health issues but there is a bigger impact on the homeless people in the Los Angeles county because they are not obtaining the proper help mentally, physically, and socially. Many people lose their lives or spread many disease amongst the community. The city of Los Angeles should provide healthcare for the homeless because this issue affects the homeless and everyone else around. More disease are passed around, more
Homelessness is a year round issue that needs to be addressed. People that are homeless will most likely commit to crime, because it is almost impossible for homeless people get a job. Think about it, a job application requires a home address, phone number to get in contact with and social insurance number. Those are all things a homeless person lacks. The origin of homelessness can be traced all the way back to colonial America. Homelessness arise during the American Revolution and Civil War. It is still an ongoing issue today in the City of Philadelphia. It has become a problem today due to factors such as, unemployment, insecure jobs, low incomes, addictions, and mental issues.
People drive or walk past a homeless person almost every day without thinking twice about the plight of that person or they may even unconsciously turn their heads the other way in disgust. Homelessness simply put, means without a home - therefore homelessness is an equal opportunity state that can happen to anyone. Even though we have seen some economic prosperity over the years, statistics show that the number of homeless remains very high. With this in mind, communities need to come together at the state, city, and individual level to come up with solutions to mitigate the spreading of this problem.
Homelessness is a continuing growing problem, with more and more not just adults but children forced to live on the streets. Homeless people are humans just like us. Being homeless, you
Homelessness is a very huge problem that America has come to face. Millions of people, including children, families, babies, veterans, and the elderly live day after day without food, water or a roof over their heads. People that are mentally ill also have it tough on the streets, which can be extremely confusing to them, and dangerous to the rest of society. This problem must be solved soon, and therefore should be addressed as a major crisis that is affecting our society.
This continuous increase in homelessness is due to the constant rise in city population in urban areas ever since the industrial revolution, as only two percent of our workforce today works on farms. For example, in Fort Wayne the growing concern of homelessness was the cities main issue they were discussing just a couple months ago. According to the article “City Council meets with area agencies to discuss homelessness problem” published in December, the Fort Wayne city council came together to strategize on how to reduce homelessness and create a better city environment for their people. The Deputy Director of Community Development for Housing and Neighborhood Services Presley-Cowen, spoke to the city council and said “we need leadership in the community to step up and actually take the leadership role, establish policy in some cases, but also establish funding sources and things like that…” in order to accomplish the cities goal. In an effort to aid the homeless, the city has taken successful steps within the last month. They created a plan for the winter assisting homeless people by creating a Community Center to be a backup warming center for homeless people in the winter months. By taking what Presley-Cowen said about the community needing to step up, one month later this plan was able to be established through the community’s social
Homelessness is a big part of our society. We see them every day. We see them sitting by the road on a cardboard box and holding a sign asking for help. According to the article “Top Causes of Homelessness in America,” by Home aid stated that 3.5 million Americans are homeless in America. There are things can cause people to become homeless, such as losing a job or getting fired, getting a divorce, natural disaster, and loss of a loved one. Other reasons why a person decides to remain homeless. It could be doing drug or drinking alcohol can both lead to a result of violence or mental illness. The three most common causes of homelessness are the natural disaster, divorce and losing a job.
