A Perception of Beneatha Younger Cynthia Kersey once said, “The only opinion about your dream that counts is yours. The negative comments of others merely reflects their limitations- not yours.” This quote applies to Beneatha, a character from Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin In The Sun, because throughout the book readers see her talk about her aspirations in life and everyone always tells her she is aiming too high. They tell her that she should not be so bold and to settle and do what a typical woman should, but she is so driven she refuses to let them degrade her and her dream. Another thing Beneatha is very stubborn about is her love life. Throughout the book Beneatha has a love interest, George Murchinson. Her family wants her to marry George because he is very rich but Beneatha does not want to because he is shallow. The subject of marrying George comes up again towards the end of the book and Beneatha says “George Murchinson! I wouldn’t marry him if he was Adam and I was Eve!” (150). This very well shows how opposed she was to marrying George Murchinson. She did not care how much money George had or how well off she would have been with him, he just was not the type of guy she was interested in, therefore she would not be with him. Readers can infer that Beneatha is the kind of person who knows what she wants in certain aspects of life, and will not settle for anything less than that. Lastly, some readers could have seen Beneatha as disoriented. This was not a describing word that just jumped out at you, but it could be noticed in some ways. In some places in the book readers hear about Beneatha doing out of the ordinary things to try and “express” herself like horseback riding and guitar lessons. When asked why she does these things she replies “people have to express themselves one way or another” (48). It can be inferred that she is doing these kind of things to fit in with the people around her at college. This could even be seen as an example of cultural
