It was hard to believe that it had been six years since the demolition derby came to Muscle Shoals. My dad was in the newspaper to promote the event. A demolition derby is an event in which you bring stripped cars to an enclosed dirt arena where you crash into each other until there is only one car left running. My family usually has about thirteen cars and we were the biggest promoter for the derby. During what we call derby season, our family was divided by this competition. It was a breezy afternoon and I heard the roaring sound of a derby car engine. I got up from my office chair and rushed to the window to find my dad revving the engine the ‘Riddler Car’ that I had painted. The car was a grass green and it was covered with purple …show more content…
I sat down, cut on the fuel pump toggle switch, and made sure that my battery was connected before I turned over the key. As soon as it cranked, the engine came to life, vibrating beneath my feet and in my ears. Little did I know, my brother was also in the back lot, sitting in his derby car. I pulled the shifter into drive and headed towards the fence. I stopped at the fence to check the parking lot before I continued forward, there was no one. BAM! My brother, Kevin, pushed my car into the center of the lot. I remember grumbling to myself about not giving me a chance to prepare. After parking the car in front of the building, a mass of family surrounded us. Everyone had tools in there hand, removing parts and tossing them into another car. Within fifteen minutes or so, the Pontiac was interior was stripped excluding the driver’s seat. I was useless to the cause; I couldn’t tell the difference between a socket wrench and a lug wrench. Music was playing over the loudspeaker and everyone was enjoying themselves, it was hard to believe that we put this much work into cars just to watch them be destroyed. I aimlessly walked around for a bit, playing on my phone, texting a few friends until my mother called out for me. “Courtney! Bring me a drink please!” I went to the mini-fridge and retrieved two Mountain Dews, one of me and the other for my mother. I walked into the garage bay and found her sitting on the
I remember it like it happened yesterday. It was a warm sunny day on October 27 2013, and we were driving to my sister Amy’s house in Kaukauna. We had to drop off a set of bunk beds at her house for my niece Mia. My dad, mom, my sister Anna, and I were all in one car, while my two brothers, Andrew and David, were in the Ford Ranger ahead of us. We were having fun in the car, talking, laughing and listening to music, until we came up on a yield sign. My brother Andrew proceeded through it first, when a black Envoy came speeding around the corner, too fast to slow down. When Andrew saw it coming he tried to swerve, but the car was going too fast, and it was too late. The car hit the truck,
We pulled up to an old house that looked abandoned. I saw the Chloe was trying her hardest to hide a nasty grin but, I ignored it because the house is what really grabbed my attention. Chloe turned off the car and opened the door. After that she signaled us to follow. Carly and Ellie glanced at each other and smirked at each other. We walked up to the doorway and opened the door. Somehow I got in front of them and walked in first. Right at that moment someone popped out and screamed. Then I found myself covered in spoiled milk. There was cameras flashing everywhere and all I could do was run and cry. I ran all of the way home, up the stairs, and straight into the bathroom to shower. I couldn't believe how stupid I was and how I didn't see what was coming the whole time. My mother knocked on the door. I stood there for a minute before I opened

In this documentary by Marshall Curry, the audience follows the campaign and everyday reality of Cory Booker. Curry addresses several very interesting aspects of Booker, his opponent, and the harsh reality inside some political campaigns. Wasserman draws similar conclusions and reiterates several main points in his book, The Basics of American Politics. Wasserman states that "Power may involve force (often called coercion), persuasion, or rewards. But its essence is the ability to change another's actions" ( Wasserman 3). He points out that one of the main aspects of politics is having power over a group of individuals and influencing them to do something that they may or may not necessarily want to do. In the case of the 2002 election for mayor in Newark, New Jersey, Sharpe James uses his power to manipulate the people of Newark to believe lies, rumors, and outrageous accusations about Booker. James has been mayor of Newark for 32 years and uses his superior role to threaten or force people to not only vote for him but to
As I sat in my desk browsing through my mind of topics for my I-Search paper, horses immediately came to my mind. Ever since I was a little girl I was fond of barrel racing. I always told my mom I was going to barrel race one day and well now I barrel race. I thought, “What makes barrel horses become gate sour?” I also thought, “Why do certain people label barrel racing as abusive and cruel?” These two questions I have asked myself many times, so now is the perfect time to find the true answer. That is what I set out to find.
From the second you pull up to the race track you catch a glimpse of the oval shaped, quarter mile clay track that contains four sharp turns. As soon as you exit your vehicle, you are faced with a distinct odor of the sweet smell of cherry race fuel that is burning off of the race cars preparing to go out onto the race track from the pit area. The “pit area” is the location of the race track where all the racer car drivers and pit crew members park, fine tune, and tweak their set ups on their race cars for the particular track. The adjustments and set ups of the races cars are vital due to the fact that every set up is unique to each and every track due to the different shapes. Another factor that the race car drivers and pit crew members have to take into consideration are the condition of the track, this is due to the fact that a dry track utilizes a different set up than a tacky track, which is a track that is “sticky” due to the abundance of

December 15, 2013 was a completely average day until my mom picked me up from school. Noticing the tears streaming down her face, I inquired, “What happened?”
Not one exit existed for miles, but the car did not have that much time to spare. We tried reading the manual to see how much gas we had left in the tank, but it only said we had some gas. Vague amounts of fuel made me stress out even more, plus I was a new driver. New to driving and low on fuel was not a good combination. I wanted to cry the stress away, but I was driving so I kept it together. Due to not having multiple rest stops along the expressway, we had nowhere to pull over and call for assistance. The barricade finally ended and we could pull off to the side. I was as relieved as Nala was when she found out Simba was alive. I pulled the car over to an emergency rest stop. A cop was at the one we pulled into, which was helpful because he or she would know who to call for help. Mom walked up to the cop and asked him politely where the nearest gas station was or if he carried a gas container with him. They talked. Suddenly, my mom walked back to the car, got in, and explained what they talked about. Sitting on the side of the road, I felt protected as well as safe because the cop was there. Almost immediately
It was a Saturday afternoon and everyone in the Mize house was getting ready to go to church. They got in their stick-shift Volkswagen Bug and they drove to church.Little did they know that would be their last ride in their Mom's favorite car.
I went back inside through the back door of the house where the kitchen is. My mother was already there sitting near the kitchen table organizing bills and payments. I handed her the mail in disappointment. I walked away afterwards with such saddened movement towards the living room so I did not have to see her reaction when she opened the envelope of my mistakes. After sitting in the couch for awhile I realized I wasn’t hearing my name being strictly called, so I had
It was a normal day I got home and my mom was there. “She told me are you ready?” “I said for what?” She exclaimed “You’re going to Norris Lake!” I was super excited because I was going with my friend from my soccer team Trey. I got packed as fast I can and they picked me up. The only problem was it was 101 degrees and a 8 hour drive. About halfway to the lake we stop at a restaurant and get food. We went to Wendys. After that we would drive and get gas and about 10 minutes before we get there we stop at Walmart and get food for the entire week.
When I woke up that morning it was just like any other summer morning getting ready to go to work. I woke up showered, got dressed, and grabbed a quick bite to eat. Out the door I went, it was a warm but cloudy morning in the beginning of July. Since I only had to drive to the west side of Sioux falls, which was closer to Humboldt where I live, I decided I was going to take gravel over to the highway like I always did going to that side of town. Off to work I went ready to start the day. Because I hate driving to work in the morning, I make it better by listening to the radio. I was driving down the gravel road when suddenly I blew a tire, got sucked right into the ditch. Just like that I slammed right into a utility pole, my mouth slammed
During this time, my mother found that her diamond earrings were missing. She then subconsciously had a feeling that Becky knew where they were. My mother asked Becky about it and Becky just said she didn’t know anything about it, but that wasn’t the true story at all. By that time I was in Nebraska visiting my favorite aunt. A week went by and I had missed Mother’s day that year since our flight was canceled, so we stayed an extra day. The next day I finally get home, not to find a warm home with my family greeting me at the door, but instead to find my parents and my sister with a couple of suitcases in their hands walking to the car. I proceed to ask my mother what was wrong with my sister and she replied with “Yesterday Becky confessed that for the past year, she has been doing heroin.” My heart sank. I never thought it was that serious. My parents took her to rehab, and I went into my room and cried the rest of the day.
