It was hard to believe that it had been six years since the demolition derby came to Muscle Shoals. My dad was in the newspaper to promote the event. A demolition derby is an event in which you bring stripped cars to an enclosed dirt arena where you crash into each other until there is only one car left running. My family usually has about thirteen cars and we were the biggest promoter for the derby. During what we call derby season, our family was divided by this competition. It was a breezy afternoon and I heard the roaring sound of a derby car engine. I sat down, cut on the fuel pump toggle switch, and made sure that my battery was connected before I turned over the key. As soon as it cranked, the engine came to life, vibrating beneath my feet and in my ears. Little did I know, my brother was also in the back lot, sitting in his derby car. I pulled the shifter into drive and headed towards the fence. I stopped at the fence to check the parking lot before I continued forward, there was no one. BAM! My brother, Kevin, pushed my car into the center of the lot. I remember grumbling to myself about not giving me a chance to prepare. After parking the car in front of the building, a mass of family surrounded us. Everyone had tools in there hand, removing parts and tossing them into another car. Within fifteen minutes or so, the Pontiac was interior was stripped excluding the driver’s seat. I was useless to the cause; I couldn’t tell the difference between a socket wrench and a lug wrench. Music was playing over the loudspeaker and everyone was enjoying themselves, it was hard to believe that we put this much work into cars just to watch them be destroyed. I aimlessly walked around for a bit, playing on my phone, texting a few friends until my mother called out for me. “Courtney!
