The life span period that begins in the early twenties and last through the thirties is known as Early Adulthood. During these time frame individuals establish personal and economic independence. They begin to advancing in career, select a mate, start a family, and rear children (Hollingsworth, 2016). However, there are a lot of other factors that affect some of the norms in this life span development. Therefore, we are going to review a case study of a volunteer, during the duration of this paper I will use “JB” to represent the individual. JB is a twenty-nine-year-old Native American male. He originates from a small town in DeKalb county. However, he is currently enlisted in the United States Army. During the time of the interview he was stationed in North Carolina waiting on his deployment to Germany. In regards to his immediate family, JB is the middle child of three children. He has a younger brother and an older sister. Currently JB is going through the divorce process with his wife. Cognitive Development As cognitive development is concerned JB considers himself to be very intelligent. JB has attended college in the past. He loves history so he enrolled in a History Education Program. However, JB never finished his degree program. As a result of not completing his degree, JB blames life failures and short comings as the culprit for his lack of success within his educational endeavors. JB also admits that academics have not always been important to him. In
To understand the importance of volunteering, I volunteered at one cultural event in San Antonio downtown. It was the festival of Diwali, a festival of light celebrate in India every year, organized by the San Antonio municipal and Indian Association. In San Antonio’s downtown we have a Riverwalk and the booth was on one side of river with the bleacher and on the other side was the stadium. Folk dances of India were performed on the stage. I volunteered at a booth of drink. My job was to sell soft drinks like coke for a dollar. I made a working there on the booth and we both had almost same interests due to that I was very surprised. There was also another booth next to us. I helped them to load, carry and organize their booth with food. This
1. Looking back over the times you have volunteered at BIC , what did you find most surprising? Describe it in some detail. Why were you surprised?
Weeping sounds from babies are the first thing I heard when I stepped foot into my volunteering site. The weeping sounded as if the babies were hopeless, lonely, and in pain. Everybody around seemed so busy or just didn’t want be bother with a crying baby. I couldn’t just stand there and let the baby cry. I had to do something. But what?
Through the years I have had the pleasure of both volunteering and working for a variety of different places and organizations. Since the age of fifteen I have held four jobs and have volunteered for a tremendous amount of groups, all which have taught me different valuable life lesson and all of which have shaped me into the person that I am today. Most notable and enjoyable of all of my jobs and volunteering I would have to say was my time as a high school lacrosse coach.
One particular outstanding achievement I have received is the recognition of my volunteer work at my local Vietnamese church. Starting in fourth grade, I would volunteer weekly at my church, usually playing for 1-3 hours (this included weddings and funerals). I affected the lives of those I played the piano for since I put out time to practice and attend extra masses on my own time. I soon felt a connection to the people I helped, and I very am thankful that my love of music has helped
What is the meaning behind volunteering or giving service? It is meant to be giving your time freely for some sort of a cause. For this course we were asked to volunteer our time for one or two of many organizations that exist in the Las Vegas area. For me this was a very meaningful event because it has lead me to seeing my own privileges and appreciating my place in the world. It also made me feel bad for those who are struggling and wanting to do more for them. The site I choose to volunteer for was Catholic charities because I want to get more involved with the Catholic church again. I used to volunteer at the Cathedral as an usher many years ago, but this was a different experience all together. It gave me additional purpose in my life
Volunteering has deeply embedded life changing experiences in my life. During my experience as a volunteer, I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer based organization that constructs, and renovates homes for people who were recently in a natural disaster, deeply in need, and for people who are in need of a stable place to live without being scared of being evicted. Not only have I learned how I affect other people, but I have also noticed that volunteering has had an effect on me. In my work as a volunteer, I never knew that what I do for people in need could have such an effect on me personally, and give me an inside view into less fortunate peoples lives.
Not only does volunteering create a positive impact on students’ lives, but it also has been shown to improve the moral development of these college students. A study conducted at various universities in the United States such as University of Portland, St. Thomas and Notre Dame researched if their service learning programs had statistically impacted moral reasoning in the students involved in these programs. Subjects were required to take a pre-and post-Defining Issues Test after the service learning course. After looking at the results of these tests, researchers found that, “the effects of service learning and the moral reasoning development of college students suggest statistically significantly higher moral reasoning when compared to a control group” (Lies). A student’s moral reasoning is very important especially when in college as they have no parents nearby to help through moral and ethical dilemmas. These students must have good moral compass and reasoning skills to determine if their actions and response are correct for the given instance. If service learning is helping to develop moral reasoning, then universities should be quick to implement these programs into their curriculum. More college universities should adopt these service learning programs and make them a necessity.
Dovercourt School is a bilingual school which provides English and Chinese program. The school philosophy is to believe that the students need to be engaged to be deeply successful in their learning. They believe that the students will be successful by persisting studying, overcoming obstacles, and delighting in accomplishing their work.
Volunteering not only is enjoyable, but also maintains someone’s health physically and mentally. Volunteering allows people to get outside and see the bigger picture of life. It allows someone to gain characteristics for a specific job they might be interested in. Depression and negative things that someone might be going through are eliminated. A sense of purpose is gained when someone choose to volunteer whether they are younger or elderly. It impacts an elderly person’s life a little more, especially if they have retired. It allows them to get out and live life with a gratifying mind set. Not only does volunteering payoff to the people choosing to volunteer, it also give the people or society suffering a more desirable lifestyle.
Volunteer work. Those two words are dreaded by many people. Some associated it with unpaid, free labor; after all it has the word “work” attached to it. Furthermore, those that do “enjoy” volunteer work see it as it being a resumé filler or to compliment up your college application, but do not take too much out of the experience. But through the eyes of MLK, volunteering can be seen as so much more than dreaded labor or a resume buff- it can have an impact on the world. Moreover, volunteer work can be the change that fixes the inequalities in this world. On the surface, volunteering may not seem like doing anything, but underneath volunteering helps to solve the inequalities in the world. Specifically, volunteering through service learning helps to solve the injustice in the segregated schooling system. Service learning has taught me that taking action is the only way to make change in order to fight inequalities. ((Thesis Sentence)). ((Transition Sentence))
This semester I am volunteering as the assistant to the school counselor at Kilmer Elementary School. My supervisor’s name is Kelly Anchors and she has been doing counseling for years in the Chicago Public School system, and this is her first year at Kilmer. Her work load has nearly doubled this year and that is why she brought me in. My job is assisting her and the other teachers with the high school application process for the eighth graders. My role includes doing administrative work and leading small groups of eighth graders. I have been doing training for weeks now on the application process and am very familiar with it, more so than she is, so I am there to answer questions for the kids and guide them through the process. Through this experience, I hope to gain a better perspective of what I want to do with my life and what career path I want to go down. I am using this to explore working in a school setting and see if this is the demographic that I want to work with. This will require me to do a lot of self reflecting throughout the year about what I am experiencing and whether or not I am enjoying it. I hope to increase my communication skills, especially with children because they do not have the advanced conversation skills as adults do. I also hope to form bonds with both the people working above me and the children I am working with.
One of the best feelings in the world, is knowing that you have made an impact in someone’s life. Volunteer work is one of my favorite things to pass the time. I love seeing the warm smiles on others faces. I work with youth, the elderly, animal shelters, and cleaning up parks.
This essay describes successful practices in volunteer development to help organizations make the best use of their volunteers.
I have volunteered at multiple facilities such as MD Anderson, Habitat for Humanity, Disaster Relief at church but for this assignment I wanted to do something different. I constantly do volunteer work due to the company I work for, Gap Inc. has an organization for employees Be What’s Possible and donates money for the hours I volunteer to the non-profit organization of my choice. My good friend is part of the education department here at UHD and said that some students from other classes were volunteering at juvenile facilities and I was intrigued, therefore I teamed with my volunteer leader for Gap and reached out to see if volunteering there would be an option for me and
