I have dream speech analysis The “I have a dream” address by Martin Luther King is one of the best speeches ever. And there are several reasons why this old speech remains the best in American history. Martin Luther King began his speech by restating the words spoken by Abraham Lincoln in his Emancipation Proclamation that declare all slaves “forever free” from January 1st, 1863. In fact, slavery did not end until October of 1865 with the addition of the 13th amendment to the constitution. King mentioned that after hundred years, the black American still live under segregation. King was delivering his message using vivid and powerful language. As we know, it is not easy to give a speech, especially if it is an important one which will be address to a large nation. But when you use evocative language, you create strong and memorable images. Dr. King drew a vivid picture of the life of African-Americans, "living on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity." Also, he used metaphors such as "In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice." King used in his speech was repletion of important words. He repeated the words in purpose because it was a message to a nation and those words should be remembered to be delivered to American citizen and also to the future nation. Not only did the repetition help the message to stick, it also did improve the presentation, structure, and flow of the speech. Here is an example of the repetition of the word “Now” in Dr King speech:"Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children." His idea—that now is the time for action, it is time together the power of nation and resist against segregation and free black Americans from slavery. Moreover, Dr. Martin Luther King was repeat the word “I have a dream” to show the hope and the dream of becoming a free and better nation should not be a dream anymore and it is a time to make the dream true.
