Literary Analysis- A Rose for Emily In William Faulkner’s short story, A Rose for Emily, the author uses themes of death and loneliness to portray the character, Emily Grierson. The theme of death is used to tell readers how death in Emily’s life became a detrimental issue and how she took it too far to benefit her. The theme of loneliness will show how Emily takes loneliness and how far she is willing to go to in order to not experience it. Death in anyone’s life can be traumatic and cause many negative side effects. Over the years, we have learned to adapt to death and this allows us to move on. Emily loved both her father and Homer to death to the point to where she could not part with either of them; she kept her father’s corpse for a short period of time and killed Homer so he would not leave her. She was a Necrophiliac, which explains why she kept the bodies. It was understandable why Emily probably did this; she was lonely from the start. The fact that she felt free when her father passed, gives us some evidence that her father really did not consider her decisions in life. Loneliness got to her before any of the events that took placed happened. After that, death became like a place holder for her if the person she loves did not have any of their lively functions, meaning that if she could not get love from them alive, she will get love from their bodies. Emily was a sad woman that could not let loved ones go; this could also mean Emily could not accept death herself. Even though she was a Necrophiliac; she could have still felt lonely deep within her with both bodies in her possession. In the end, Emily died alongside Homer in the house; all we can say is that she’s finally at peace from
