A common fear across the world is the fear of change, despite all of the progress that it could bring. This fear is present throughout William Faulkner’s story, “A Rose for Emily”. After the death of her father, Emily Grierson meets Homer Barron, a construction worker from the North. The two begin to date regardless of Homer’s open confession of being homosexual. The townspeople begin to think they became married when Emily bought wedding gifts for Homer. But Homer then unexpectedly disappears, leaving the townspeople to assume he left because of Emily. However, the real reason for his disappearance is revealed when the townspeople gain access to Emily’s house several years later after her death. In “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, the author reveals the conflicts that can occur when tradition and change challenge each other through the use of point of view, symbolism, and setting. Faulkner’s use of point of view shows the differing sentiments of several characters in the story. The point of view in “A Rose for Emily” is unique, in which the narrator uses first person while representing the townspeople as a whole. One common difference between the different groups of the town is that the newer generation of townspeople often have negative opinions of the older generation. When Emily became isolated after the disappearance of Homer Barron, the townspeople claimed they “knew that this was to be expected too; as if that quality of her father which had thwarted her women’s life so many times had been too virulent and too furious to die” (1073). In this quote, the reader can see that the town criticizes Emily’s father for keeping her isolated by chasing off the men who wanted to court her. It also shows how Emily does not know how to act differently despite her father not influencing her life anymore. This inability to accept change could have been part of the reason why she
