A Short Story : A Story?

“What is going on?” John blurted out. He stood in the doorway, his mouth hanging open. I slowly dragged myself up off of the floor.

“I don’t like it when George asks you to meet with him alone at dark!” cried Mary. My friend George told me there was something big that he thought I would be interested in. My wife Mary doesn’t like George that much because he always seems to get me in trouble.

I’ll do anything, please!” he screams. “Who’s after you, Nephew? What are you doing?” my father asks as Benjamin runs under the table. “The British troops! I couldn't pay my bills and did not want to be imprisoned, so I ran” He says sobbing as a look of horror rolls across my parents’ faces. “I’m sorry Benjamin, but we can’t let you stay. What would they do to us if they found you here?” my Father states. “They would take us to prison as well.” “I’m sorry Uncle. I thought you would understand as he runs out the door. That night, I am awakened from a nightmare by a loud ‘bang.’ I run to my widow and look outside but I don’t see anything. Troubled, I fall back asleep. I groan as I realize it’s friday, in other words, chore day. I get up to make my family breakfast and I see my mother in the corner of the kitchen, dead. I scream and run to my Father who is still asleep. “Father, Father, Father get up! Mother is dead in the kitchen!” I scream in his face as he processes my words. As soon as he does, he rushes to the kitchen. “She told me she needed a drink of water and I let her go,” he sobs as I try to comfort him. “I knew it was difficult for her to lose one of her sons and no longer be able to write books or to her family, but I never thought she

For a moment he debates about not going through with the wedding because he does not want to grow old. His bride to be Emily, has even worse jitters. “I never felt so alone in my whole life. And George, over there – I hate him – I wish I was dead papa papa!” Emily expressed.

Her unfaithful decision harms her marriage with George, leading her to unknown certain death and the loss of true happiness. Myrtle has the desire and hope of one day living a perfect, wealthy and famous type life, and is willing to do it at any cost. This exemplifies the one reason she wants to be with Tom, is because he represents the life of “the rich and famous”. When Myrtle first married George Wilson, she thought she was crazy about him and that they were happy together. Myrtle says, “The only crazy I was when I married him. I knew right away I made a mistake. He borrowed somebody’s best suit to get married in, and never told me about it, and the man came after it one day when he was out”. This shows how materialistic Myrtle is, and how she didn’t appreciate how George couldn’t afford his own suit to get married in. Not only being attracted to Tom’s appearance but his money as well. She believes that Tom is the ideal man and represents the American dream. Myrtle uses Tom to inch her way to upper class by sleeping with him, as she is considered as lower class. Thinking Tom will save her causes damage and destroys Myrtle’s ambitions of being higher class as her life comes to an end when she is hit by a speeding car. Exemplifying how the desire for a luxurious life and American dream only caused agony in the novel and sadly ended a young woman’s

Clare’s heart looked as if it had literally broken at the strained sound of her husband’s voice. Yet, she couldn’t utter as single comfort in return. The man held no sympathy as he shoved her away from her dying lover. Clare could do nothing, but thrash hopelessly to get back to her fallen lover.
