The clock over the Union Station information booth indicated that it was five minutes to eight. The young Marine Corps officer squinted as he looked at the clock to make certain of the time. He couldn’t understand why his heart was beating so hard he could feel it in his throat. Why would the mere anticipation of meeting a woman for dinner affect him like a recon mission behind enemy lines? In just five minutes, he would meet the mysterious woman, who for the past eighteen months had helped him through such trying times. All he really knew about her was that she was an English teacher in Alexandria, Virginia, and that it was her written words that had sustained him during eighteen months of combat. She had written to him through a program …show more content…
His heart continued to beat faster and stronger as anticipating thoughts raced through his mind. At least his butterflies were flying in formation. It was two minutes after eight. As he scanned the crowd rushing from the train, he noticed an attractive young woman walking in his direction. She was looking directly at him as she approached. She was tall and somewhat athletic looking. Her dark curls bounced off her shoulders as she walked. She was tastefully dressed in a pale green suit, white blouse, and heels, which probably made her seem taller than she actually was. As she got closer, he could see that she had large doe eyes and an olive complexion. He thought he was seeing the incarnate beauty of springtime. As she got close enough to speak, she developed a slight, suggestive smile on her face. “Going my way Marine?” she asked, as she slowed her pace. The words had just left her lips when he saw Lizbeth. She was walking up directly behind the beautiful young woman. She was nearer fifty than thirty, as was evidenced by the greying hair she had tucked up under her hat. She was slightly over-weight and seemed appropriately dressed to be ringing a bell for the Salvation Army. There was no mistaking who she was; pinned to her rumpled coat was a red rose. The Marine was torn in two. He was longing to hurry off with the beautiful young woman who was continuing to look back at him as she walked away. He turned to Lizbeth as the young woman disappeared into the
The story begins, with the introduction of Jacob Kitino a wealthy Acholi boy, who is friends with Tony, a poor boy. They are going to school at the “George Jones Seminary for boys school” for the new school semester. They meets a boy, while they were walking at night. Jacob gives the boy money and bread, the the boy ran away, but Jacob never got his name. His name is Oteka, a very smart boy who was walking into Gulu to stay safe from the “LRA kidnappers”. This is considered the “Birth” of the “War Brothers” story because this is how the boys meet and a little bit about their backgrounds. The boys get to there school and they are excited to see each other again. Immediately after arriving they are asked to watch after small 12 year old boy named Norman. Later that night the LRA attaches their school, they break down the door and knocks them unconscious. When they wake up, Jacob and the boys are marching in the forest, tired and hungry. This the “Call to Adventure” because the boys are having a good day at school and next thing you know it all goes bad and they are now LRA soldiers.
attitude of matchless grace and dignity. Ah how beautiful she is! He springs forward with
“A Splendid Little War” was an alternative title to the Spanish American War named by Ambassador John Hay to his good friend Theodore Roosevelt. This war was one of the shortest wars of all time, lasting only about four months. Surprisingly, the main cause of death in this war wasn’t by being shot, but by dying of diseases such as Yellow Fever, Malaria and other diseases. Only 9,413 Spaniards were killed by wounds and combat and 53,540 were killed by many diseases. In this “Splendid Little War” America was able to free Spain's overseas empire which included Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The United States was also hungry for foreign good that weren’t available to them in the homeland. After an easy victory over Spain, American was able to control islands in the seas such as Cuba, The Philippines and Guam. After this war, Spain was no longer a world power and the United States was on its way to the top.
Remembering a Forgotten war by Donald R. Hickey 2012, an academic journal, talks about the military history where by people were subjected to a difficult and different lifestyle than the one they were used too at that time.
The essay “ How To Tell a True War Story” written by O’Brien complexifies the idea of truth by furnishing readers divergent approaches on to tell how if a story is true or not, in which its readers had to utilize their own sense of understanding to interpret what O’Brien was emphasizing about truth. Interpretation is a psychological process, which requires a mental process to make meaning of a text. Stanley Fish, the author of “ How To Recognize a Poem When you See One”argues that the meaning of a text originated from the reader’s recognition and its interpretive communities. Fish, in his essay, I acquired the true meaning of a text originated from the act of reading and its interpretive communities.
Darkness surrounds the evening sky. The stars were peeking out from their dark home. It looked as if God took a straight pin, poked a sheet of paper with tiny holes. Crickets softly played their symphony as the world slept. James laid in his bunk, staring off into the darkness. He wondered what the day had in store for him. The night watchman quietly walked his route, like a thief in the night.
Her clothes underneath still looked as clean as they were this morning. She dusted her jeans off, just in case, and straightened her shirt. She knew she would be meeting The Heir today, so she didn't dare look unkempt.
Her collar and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace, and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets
Tim O’Brien reminds us that true war stories are never moral. A war story is true if it is obscene and evil, with no virtue. A true war story will have no examples of the way humans should behave (514). The contributing authors absolutely influence the perception of the war, their works are meaningful, powerful. Further, we have the luxury of 20/20 hindsight and a PBS documentary that took 10 years to complete to consider when forming our opinion. Personally, I am grateful for the influence media and writings have on perceptions of warfare. I am coming to understand my grandfather who served in the Navy and the biases he brought home from the war. While I disagree with them, I am beginning to see where they originate from and why even at the

A characteristic of a true war story is that it is meant to convey an emotion or feeling. In “How to Tell a True War Story,” O’Brien writes, “It comes down to gut instinct. A true war story, if truly told, makes the stomach believe.” One of the emotions that Good Morning, Vietnam conveys is the conflicted feeling that most Americans had at the time regarding the government. The Vietnam War was one of the most controversial conflicts in America’s history.
Me and a few of the men from my regiment stood on shore while we watched the Virgina attacked Union ships. Boy, was it a sight to see. The Yankee's fought hard, but they where no match for the Confederate ironclad. The cannon balls just bounced off the hull! The Yankees however, did take a hit. It was funny seeing the wooden ships try to compare themselves to the ironclad.

The Experience Of War Many authors have written about war themes, some extracts of the stories and poems that I have read and researched are The Upturned Face by Steven Crane .It is about a fictional war being fought in an imaginary Europe. Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell describes his senses and feeling of getting shot in the neck during battle. Exposure by Wilfred Owen, describes the horrors and reality of being in the trenches of the First World War. And The Making of Me by Robert Westall is about a shell-shocked grandfather who has the responsibility of looking after his grandchild.
War has been a part of human culture since it's birth. It has led to a great many massacres and has shown us the evil that exists within the souls of humanity. Some have even gone as far as saying that war is human nature. To better understand the reasons behind war and how it affects others, I've examined several different societies and cultures so as to better understand the necessity of war and see the cause of their external war attitude. To do so, different variables from two topics (military institutions and external war attitude) were matched up and crossed so as to look into the answers to these questions. The variables were then calculated and through these graphs, I was able to find different societies in which
