A Simple Math Equation What makes a great story? Similar to a professional basketball team or professional football league, one might be quite certain that the key ingredients that one throws into the mixing bowl are what drive and push the excellence that is produced by the team, or in this case, a great story. A story will never be complete or whole without addressing the important elements that a reader wants to see. In A Farewell to Arms, author Ernest Hemingway shows the reader a perfect example of how lining up the correct elements of a book can make for a successful storyline and ultimate guide for young avid writers to base their works. Every good story should have at least one identifiable theme. (source) Seeing as there can be a number of different themes in a story, Ernest Hemingway does not hold back from ever giving the reader a chance to fall in love with the story. The reader’s first glimpse of reality in the story is shot through the depths of the theme. One of the most common themes in the book is war. War marks and defines the characters in the book. It is the death in their eyes and fear in their hearts. The reader knows this. Because the reader can easily define war as one of the major themes in this book, the reader can also feel the loss and pain that the characters experience throughout the story as well. Another theme that is strategically placed inside of A Farewell to Arms is dreams versus reality. Throughout the entire storyline, the main characters are constantly battling yet another war with themselves. Henry and Catherine, the main characters, are fighting to settle between love and lust, glory and honor, and pain and praise. The two characters live inside of a fantasy until one is marked by the horror of a gruesome reality such as when the two are faced with defining the true remarks of their love for each other.
