I. Introduction
A. Gain Attention: “I just wanted to start by wishing everyone a Earth Day! You may not pay attention to today as much as you might to Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. but today is a holiday of the utmost importance that should be thought about daily. Today marks the awareness of the importance of saving the Earth we live on.” http://www.earthday.org/earth-day-history-movement
B. Establish Speaker-Audience-Topic Relationship: As college students, we have a lot on our plates. Rigorous coursework, extracurricular activities, and busy social lives. With all of these things going on, it can be hard to remember to even think about the environment around you and the ways in which you are helping and harming it. It is extremely important to be conscious of your environment, and a way to get an idea of your impact on the environment is by estimating your carbon footprint.
C. Orientation: In my speech: I will be addressing three questions: “What is a carbon footprint?”, “Why is it important to reduce your carbon footprint?”, and “How can you do it?”
Transition into Body of Presentation: So, what is a “carbon footprint”?
II. Body
A. Establishing Understanding Step
i. Defining a carbon footprint: A carbon footprint, by definition, is the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person or group. (timeforchange.org/what-is-a-carbon-footprint-definition)
1. Supporting detail: Relating to the audience:
It is essential for people to understand the metrics of ecological footprint and the importance of sustaining the balance.
Make others become aware of what’s going on in our communities and tell them what they can do to help.
Carbon footprint is the total of greenhouse gases produced by an individual’s habits as well as the energy required to produce things an individual consumes.
The quizzes raised my overall awareness of my carbon footprint, and brought to my attention the fact that I have a larger negative impact than the average person. To reduce my ecological footprint this semester, there are a couple of things I can do. First, I can start to recycle paper, glass, and plastic. As a college student who spends a lot of time on campus, it is practical to recycle because of the recycling resources that Texas A&M offers. The recycling containers with three stream receptacles are color coordinated and located all over campus, making recycling an easier task. Secondly, I could cut down on the amount of meats that I consume. Cutting out some forms of meat from my diet, especially beef or pork, would help cut out greenhouse gas emissions that are produced from animal agriculture. I am not a huge meat fan, and so this would not pose a problem. Additionally, I have the funds to purchase protein-based vegetarian food items. Lastly, I could walk more or take the bus more frequently. A lot of places are only a 2 to 5 minute drive from my house, and so it would behoove me to walk more. As a college student in a small college town, a lot of buildings and locations are fairly close to each other, and so walking is a realistic
As I thought about what topic to choose for my National History Day Project, I came across the civil war and eventually Clara Barton. I had never had the opportunity in school to learn about it thoroughly, so I decided to research more about it. As I began my research it started to spark my interest. My previous National History Day Projects were medical related and I was very interested to learn more. Throughout the early stages of my research, I became intrigued with Clara’s life and her taking a stand by helping thousands of wounded soldiers, searching for the missing soldiers of the Civil War, and founding the American Red Cross.
CMST 412 – Environmental Rhetoric: Please, notice that your instructor will give you a short quiz at the beginning of each class, be prepare for it and read every day for this class. Your Concrete Example
Population in different countries in different areas have the environmental impact. The ecological footprint is the inverse of carrying capacity and represents the amount of land needed to support a given population. An example for ecological footprint is, the Dutch need a land area 15 times larger than that of the Netherlands to support their population.
In the speech over “Harming our oceans” had various factors that Lauren Voss did really well on. Her work was greatly organized step by step that included all the most important points to make us aware of the damage we're causing to the environment. In the beginning of her video she gives out detailed information on how humans are causing problems
Thesis: Throughout my speech, I want to persuade everyone to start recycling. It is important as it helps reduces the amount of pollution.
Overall, my strategy will focus on appealing to logos. By using numerous statistics and data to reinforce the reality of our earth’s state to the audience. Presenting reason paired with a well-structured argument will hopefully make the audience gain a new perspective about environmental sustainability. Focusing on logos to argue my purpose helps the audience understand the situation and lead them to better actions. I will also appeal to pathos and ethos to support my main strategy. The facts will create credibility and by appealing to the audience’s emotions will help stress the importance of the issue and help gain the attention of the audience.
We can reduce air pollution by Conserving energy, Use energy efficient light bulbs, Participate in your local utility’s energy conservation programs, Limit driving by carpooling, using public transportation, biking and walking, Combine Shopping trips for fewer trips, Use electric or hand-powered lawn care equipment and mobiles, Be careful not to spill gasoline when filling up your car, Run dishwashers and washing machines only when full, Choose environmentally friendly cleaners and bleaches, Advocate for emission reductions from power plants and more stringent national vehicle emission standards, Decrease construction, Decrease fuel burning, Space heaters: Use them only when someone is awake
Imagine a time where the whole world lives a more sustainable lifestyle. Think about how clean and desirable our planet would then become. Well in order to achieve this, we have to start small, why not at the college level. If I were to run for college president, with a platform for a more sustainable campus, I would make sure to make it a fun and enjoyable environment for students. Some changes and ideas I have for the campus would be adding bike paths, increasing the recycling bins, installing solar panels, planting native plants and trees, and buying food locally.
But what is a carbon footprint? Basically, carbon footprints are defined as the total amount of greenhouse gasses that are produced when it comes to supporting human activities (and which are expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide) (What is a carbon footprint?). Driving a car, heating one's house, even buying
I’m going to give you some options in things that you can implement or change in your way of living that can help with the issue of climate change. These things will help cut carbon in the atmosphere.
This essay will review two significant environmental experiences I have encountered exploring the influences of these my life and how these have altered my view on what is environmental sustainability. An examination into these two experiences will follow into reviewing my perspectives on environmental sustainability and how these two experiences influenced this. To conclude a discussion on my role as a teacher and how this will impact myself when in the classroom.
