Roles of Minor Characters
Every story in the history of literature has one or more characters that are not as significant as other characters. Although these characters aren’t as important, they serve to advance the plot or are symbolically important. There are definitely numerous depictions of these characters in A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens. Two examples are Lucie Manette Darnay and Miss Pross. Both of these flat characters are important in the development of the story.
Lucie Manette Darnay played an important and symbolic role in the novel. Dickens described her as “the golden thread” of the novel, weaving its good throughout the plot. Along with her good nature, she was also young and attractive.

Lucie is obviously a symbol for good and righteousness. She is “the golden thread” that binds the other characters together. She is protected by Miss Pross, devoted to her father, Doctor Manette, loved by Sydney Carton, a friend of Mr. Lorry, and was married to Charles Darnay.
Another minor character significant to the story is Madame Defarge. Defarge is the antithesis of Lucie. Defarge’s entire family perished when she was a young girl. She possesses an extreme vengeance towards the people who killed them. She condemned not only the people that did it, but also the entire Evremonde family line to which the murderers were from. She would inscribe the names into her knitting registry of people she doomed to death. Her drive to attain retribution drove her to commit horrible acts. When the time comes, let loose a tiger and a devil; but wait for the time with the tiger and the devil chained—not shown, yet always ready. (Dickens 165)
Her hatred and sense of revenge have evoked evil thoughts and actions in Defarge. Symbolically, Madame Defarge stands for the intensity and bloodthirst behind the Revolution. Her views of the optimal course of the Revolution are revealed in a dialogue between her, her husband, and the Jacques Three:
‘It is true what Madame says,’ observed Jacques Three.
‘Why stop? There is great force in that. Why stop?’
After eighteen years of solitary confignment in the Bastille prison, Lucie’s father (Alexander Manette) has gone insane and is unaware of the life around him. With Lucie's patience and compassion Mr. Manette is restored to his old self. Now that Lucie and her father have reunited their bond cannot be broken. Lucie’s good-hearted nature is brought up once more when she shows her understanding toward Sydney Carton as he confesses his feelings about her, even though he has been nothing but a bitter, confused drunk around her. Since Lucie had helped her father so much and helped him grow throughout his life, Dr. Manette thought he would try to repay her by getting her husband released from prison to ensure Lucie’s happiness.
The women in A Tale of Two Cites behave in extremely opposing ways. Lucie Manette is a frail young woman. She constantly becomes overwhelmed and faints at even the thought of danger. She has never been exposed to poverty nor suffered through severe hardships. Lucie is genteel; she is constantly pampered and always has people looking out for her. She is constantly being treated like a small child; "she softly laid the patient [Lucie] on a sofa, and tended her with great skill and gentleness" (23). Madame Defarge is a ruthless, bloodthirsty, vengeful, and poor woman. She is best described by Ms. Pross as "the wife of Lucifer" (336). She readily cuts off a man's head and "she never missed [an execution]" (342). Madame Defarge's sadistic nature is seen best during the execution of Foulon, an aristocrat. Lucy proves her love and impact on the men in her life with patience, loyalty and devotion. Although Lucie starts a marriage with Darnay, she manages to still take care of her father. In many conversations between Dr. Manette and Lucie, the doctor tells Lucie that “he found her more devoted to him married (if that could be) than single” (Dickens 219). Lucie approaches, with tears in her eyes. The shoemaker asks who she is. Noticing her blonde hair, he removes a necklace he wears and reveals a scrap of paper containing some golden threads of hair—stray hairs from his wife, which he has kept all these years as a spiritual escape from his imprisonment. Overcome by emotion, Manette struggles to recognize his daughter. Lucie rocks Manette's head on her chest like a child. She promises him that his agony has ended, and gives thanks to God.
Although neither Madame Defarge nor Lucie Manette are well-developed as characters in themselves, both symbolize opposing forces. Lucie is lovely, golden-haired, and good, a symbol of light. By her very presence she draws the people together and brings them to their full potential. She enables Dr. Manette to return to health and peace, and inspires Sydney Carton to find redemption for his degenerate living in the ultimate sacrifice of his life. Sydney Carton is the most memorable character in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, a story of redemption, resurrection, self-sacrifice change and love, all of these words have to do with the extreme transformation of. Sydney Carton had such great love for Lucie Mannette that evolves from a depressed loaner that can only attempt to substitute happiness with alcoholic indulgence to a loyal caring friend who makes the ultimate sacrifice for the ones he loves.
She witnesses firsthand all of the hardships the French commoners are enduring and it fuels her rage and anger toward the nobility. Madame Defarge channels all of this anger into exacting her revenge, but we cannot help pitying her for her wretched childhood. We comprehend the reasons behind the madness, but that does not justify her actions.
Primarily, the characters in the book are foils for each other. One example is Lucie Manette and Madame Defarge. Lucie is a very gentle and loving woman. Everything that she does shows her kindness and virtue. Her tenderness and adoration for everyone empowers her to unite the family. In chapter six, when she sees her father for the very first time Lucie says to him, “…that your agony is over...I have come here to take you from it...” (49), this marks the beginning of the doctor’s rebirth. Through this statement Dickens has Lucie promising that she will do anything for her father out of pure love. As the Manette’s travel back to England, in time it becomes clear that Lucie’s love towards her father is beginning to have an impact on his behavior. In chapter five, of the second book Dr. Manette is able to carry on a complete conversation, which shows the readers that he is regaining his sanity. Later on in chapter seven of the third book, Dickens reminds his readers again of how far Dr.Manette has come since that first day in the Defarge’s attic, “No garret, no shoemaking, no One Hundred and Five, North Tower, now! He had accomplished the task he had set himself…" (285-6). It is at this moment that the reader knows he has been resorted back to his old self before he was in prison. Throughout all the hardship and pain the doctor has to endure, his daughter Lucie never leaves his side.
