Welcome students to Survivor Camp! Get everyone excited to learn survival skills while tackling Survivor challenges as a tribe. Welcome to Survivor Camp! You have been dropped in a remote area somewhere in the United States. There are no buildings, cars, roads, cell phones, computers or other people. It is just you, the other castaways and Mother Nature! Look closely and you might even see the vultures soaring in circles high above you, catching the thermals as the hot air rises from the valley. Ahead of you, there are 10 different items for each tribe to retrieve during a relay race. This gear will be all your tribe has to survive throughout camp. Each tribe needs to line up single file behind the starting line. When I say GO, the first runner will retrieve a single item and bring it back to their tribe. As soon as they cross the line, the next tribe member runs and retrieves another item. Keep the relay going until you’ve collected all of your survival items. You can pick them up in any order, and everyone needs to run an equal amount of times. If you drop any items, go back and pick them up! As soon as you finish, the entire tribe needs to sit on the ground. The fastest team to complete this challenge wins! After the race, let tribes know that these items are their only lifelines for the challenges that lie ahead. There are no replacements for lost or damaged items in the wild, so treat the gear with extra care! (small group) Identify one or two different items for each tribe to focus on, and have them brainstorm different ways they could be used during Survivor Camp. Then have each tribe share their ideas with the class! (whole group discussion) How could these items be used in a survival situation? (Don’t feel like you have to correct misconceptions or share any extra information just yet. The goal here is to get students thinking creatively and working
