Now I want to talk about symbolize in the story, a worn path.
Phoenix
The name of the main character, the old Negro woman, is Phoenix. Phoenix, in the Greek Mythology, associated with the Sun, it obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor.(From Wikipedia) Back to the story, when our main character Phoenix is on her way to the city, there are so many difficulties that she is facing—bush catches her dress, a black dog goes towards her and she fall into the ditch, etc. To old Phoenix, it is hard to go through the path; she may fall off at any time. However, every time after she concord a difficulty, it seems that she reborn.

2. The “path”
The concept “path” symbolizes a lot in the story. Through the path the negro woman passed, Eudora Welty shows what the Negroes suffered when they were fighting for the equity. As a result, the “path” means the path of the black liberation.
On the long road to town, Phoenix walks form the morning to the night; it is like that a human is on his/her way of life. The road has beauty, of course, danger. If you have a clear target, you will have the wheels of process. The walk was hard, just like what Phoenix says: 'Seem like there is chains about my feet, time I get this far. Something always take a hold of me on this hill—pleads I should stay.’
