A hero is the one who can do anything to protect his people, guard the good and maintain a high amount of morality. The Greek hero Achilles and Ireland’s Cuchulain both lead very similar lives; the lives of true hero-warriors. Although the tales and myths of both these great warriors come from very different cultures it is important to note the similarities between them and they do have various character traits that sets them apart but the myths of Achilles and Cuchulain are essentially the same type of legends. Achilles is considered the greatest of all the Greek warriors. Because no man could beat him in the combat and most importantly no weapon could pierce him expect for his heel. At the initial narration of the story, we get this …show more content…
Cuchulain is such an hailed heroic figure in ireland because he experienced different life style as a demi god who could do the impossible, He is without a doubt Ireland’s greatest hero-warrior. Many say he is the Achilles of the irish myth because both know that they are going to die young but still battles it out for glory. Both of them have the capacity to kill hundreds of men with ease. The ancient Greek and Irish myths might possess similar way of portraying a hero as The hero is insanely strong and handsome enough to win any women heart. The most common thing in both of them is that they are heroes from birth. In the book it says that cuchulain fought the other country army when he was seven years old. Eventhough both the heros description and birth are similar, cuchulain holds a little edge over Achilles in the sense of nobleness, as Achilles kills people out of revenge factor and anger, cuchulain does it for his country men and protection of the state. This is definitely a nobler cause to leap into battle. None of the things maynot be true about the deeds or the insanely unbelievable heroics, they might be the sheer exaggeration in the tales in order for the writers to elevate their characters, they might have existed as great warriors but not as demi gods who possess unbelievable talents.
they are both great warriors for their countries and will live through generations by stories of their written heroics travelling around the world.
A mythic hero
Heroes comes in all different shapes and sizes. This is clearly seen when comparing the heroes in the stories of Beowulf, Cuchulainn’s Boyhood Deeds, Lanval, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. For example, Beowulf and Cuchulainn both share traits of a hero; however, have drastic dissimilarities.
Heroes are viewed differently today as the average person who is admired for courage or outstanding achievements such as firemen and police officers. The ancient Greeks viewed heroes as those that acquire more than just courage, they must be strong and inspiring as well. Although Achilles proved to be several of these entities, the Iliad begins with
Achilles possessed superhuman strength, he was swift and agile, he was brave, and he was intelligent. Achilles shows his extraordinary fighting skills and his intelligence in Book XXII, when he duels against Hector. Achilles manages to kill Hector “…like a high-flown eagle…” with a perfectly timed stab to “…where the collar-bones hold the neck from the shoulders, the throat, where death of the soul comes most swiftly; in this place brilliant Achilles drove the spear as he came on in fury, and clean through the soft part of the neck the spearpoint was driven” (Book XXII Lines 324-327). His intelligence is shown in that he knew a wound to this spot on Hector’s neck would be fatal, as Hector was wearing Achilles’ old armor that he stole off the body of Patroclus. An ordinary warrior most likely would not have had the skill with the sword to kill Hector, nor the intelligence to know to aim for the exact uncovered spot in Hector’s neck in the first place. Achilles also shows his bravery before this fight by wanting and agreeing to actually fight against Hector, who was the strongest warrior of the Trojans and the one person who was believed to actually have a chance in combat against Achilles.
In poetry and in song, literature, and action movies, the hero embodies the qualities of bravery, strength, and honor. According to Merriam-Webster, a hero is a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability: a warrior: a person admired for achievements and noble qualities: one who shows great courage. While others define this concept as a trustworthy cause a selfish or unselfish act. On the other hand, a hero is someone who stands for integrity and justice for all mankind and willingly put his life in peril for that belief. As noted there will always be different definitions of a hero as of the diverse perspective on the issue.
To be a hero in the Anglo-Saxon period the person must be a warrior, One that must be able to face any situation, and be very intelligent. The hero must also be courageous and willing to fight and die for their people. To become a real hero the person must go through the cycle that all heros experience during life, referred to as the “Hero’s Journey”. It is steps and stages on the hero’s life which includes, the calling to adventure , supernatural or aid by mentor, the facing of the issue or calling, and return home. To be honored for their success by their people when returned back to their home.
In the short stories called the “Cuchulain Stories,” Cuchulain is an epic hero because he acts as a brave and heroic hero. Cuchulain shows that he is brave when he faces a life threatening situation. “Then, as the hound charged open-jawed, with all his strength he threw the ball right into the creature's mouth; and as for a moment the hound stopped short, choking as the ball passed down its throat, the lad seized hold of the mastiff's open jaws, grasping its throat with one hand and the back of its head with the other, and so violently did he strike its head against the pillars of the door, that it was no long time until the creature lay dead upon the ground.” This quote supports the claim that Cuchulain is brave because he was willing and
When labeling a hero, society seeks out certain traits or variables they find important to fulfill this job. “We look not only to public figures, but we look more broadly across culture, for the kind of values that we think are important during a time of crisis” (Cannon). The modern day hero has evolved based on the needs of the people of the time. For example, in the year 1200, war was fought by man-to-man combat resulting in great warriors to be viewed as heroes. However, in today’s society, the requirement of a hero has changed. We depict them based on the lives they have saved and how they have accomplished that deed. Many times, martyrs are considered heroes because they have died for the people they have protected, but not all heroes come face to face with war. They may be off site hidden from the battle grounds, while still fighting for our lives. Two outstanding heroes in history are Beowulf, King of the Danes, and Achilles, an important warrior in the Trojan
The values of an Epic Hero is shown through many literary writings including the Iliad, Beowulf, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The textbook dictionary definition of a hero is a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character.Achilles from the Iliad and Beowulf were two heroes who fought to show their superior power and were very egotistical. They had motives as to why they fought, and only considered their gain. On the other hand, Sir Gawain, from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, had no motive to take on the Green Knight. He only did it to benefit King Arthur and to make it easier on the other Knights in Arthur's court. Sir Gawain demonstrates the true meaning of heroism through his selflessness, courage and humanity.
This just emphasizes how Achilles was not just concerned about his soldiers and showing face, but he was more driven by his rage and his grudge against Agamemnon for what he did to him.
“Can heroes actually be anonymous?” (Cannon). Today, our heroes sit behind computers screens and use weapons of range and intelligence throughout the world, but what about the heroes of old? We haven’t always had ranged weapons to hide behind. Heroes used to be the people who lead the charge against an unfathomable foe, stood up for what they believe in, and protected the people around them. In the Shakespearian play Beowulf, Beowulf is the hero of the story as he answers a call of help and saves a nation plagued with a demonic beast killing its people. Then, in the Iliad, the Greek Achilles is the hero as he helps the Greeks attack the city Troy and fights in a decisive battle against the Trojans strongest warrior, Hector. While both Beowulf and Achilles have qualities that are similar, they also have traits that make them distinctly different kinds of heroes.
“We look not only to public figures, but we look more broadly, across the culture, for the kind of values that we think are important during a time of crisis” (Cannon). The heroes in today’s world are quite different from those of the past and those of the future. Currently, a hero could be anyone you look up to for both the right and wrong reasons, whereas formerly, heroes were people who were looked up to due to their miraculous actions. Along with this, most of our heroes today are unsung and anonymous, unlike in the past. Beowulf was the greatest hero of his time, and so was Achilles. Beowulf was a respectable, brave, and loyal man who is important for the reason that he saved Hrothgar’s kingdom from the monster Grendel, and Grendel’s mother. Achilles on the other hand was fearless, motivated, and a risk taker while fighting in the battle for what he believed in. Both leaders have heroic traits, but they vary
There are many types of heroes (such as the ones in comic books, myths, movies, or even just everyday life heroes) but all of them have perseverance when they’re going through a conflict. Heroes are role models and they’re people that we look up too. They all have unique and special qualities that make one another different from each other. For example policemen battle crime everyday and when they’re overcoming a conflict they have determination, courage and other traits that people admire them for and that make them as a hero. Typically a hero is admired for their achievement/actions and qualities.
Achilles has been considered the greatest hero of the Greeks in the Iliad for numerous valid reasons. Similarly, Achilles not only stays humble, but extremely courageous. Waiting patiently for Hector, Achilles says, “No man so long as I am alive above Earth… and see daylight shall lay the weight even if you mean Agamemnon.” (1.88-90) In this statement, Achilles says that no one should ever have power over him. “So, must one be called of no account and a coward if I must carry out every order you may happen to give me….” (6.293-303) Clearly, he fears no one and does not understand the meaning of failure. Achilles constantly acts as man of fierce strength and courage.
When the word "hero" is spoken, everyone has different thoughts. Some will think of super powers like flying and saving people from villains; while others have a certain person they know or have heard of that come to mind who have done something to make a difference in the lives of others but who is a hero to you? To answer this question you must first ask yourself what a hero is; what comes to your mind when someone says the word. When I am confronted with these questions I always have the same thoughts; smart, strong will power, and someone who stands up for what they believe is right.
In reading The Iliad and Beowulf, one can conclude they are both literary works based on war and heroism. The hero in the Iliad is Achilles, who is from Greece and is the Archaen army’s greatest warrior in the battle of the Trojan war. Beowulf, a Geatish warrior has come to help the Danes in their long fight against Grendel, showing his heroism. Both characters Achilles and Beowulf share some similar traits such as their thirst for glory, their abnormal strength, and their courage. The characters also display several differences among each other as in they are not from the same cultures, Beowulf is more selfless than Achilles, and Achilles fights humans instead of mythical creatures such as Beowulf does. In medieval literature and todays literature, heroism is important simply because it gives people hope and inspires them. As stated before, Achilles and Beowulf were both thirsty for glory and I think that trait is still present in today’s time which cannot always be positive. Also, in todays time it is not the term hero that has changed. It is we who have changed. For most people, the media, pop culture, and events in society change our perception of a hero.
