A psychologist could automatically become a member of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology (SSPP), by having the endorsements of two members, the payment of dues, and a membership in the American Psychological Association (APA). Nonmembers, with endorsements and payments of dues had to be voted in by the membership (Thomas, 2011); automatic membership for APA members was eliminated in 1940. The first African American to earn a PhD in psychology was Francis Cecil Sumner, he qualified for an SSPP membership in 1939, but his membership was delayed and eliminated. Sumner was known for his racial bias and supporting educational justice. In his article “Philosophy of Negro Education” Sumner states a series of stages in human civilization

An APA sanction is, of course, a concept of fundamental importance that plays a paramount role in psychology and psychology research. The above mentioned sanctions that the APA ethics comittee might issue when imposing a punitive order against a psychologist who has violated an ethical standard are as follows: reprimand, censure, expulsion, stipulated resignation. These aforesaid sanctions should reflect on the severity or intention of the unethical act (APA, 2010). What's more, the punitive order of a reprimand would be considered the lesser of the sanctions, with resignation being the consequence for the most ridigedly enforced sanction of the APA.

Labels distinguish individuals in everyday life; if 2000 people from across the world were randomly selected and put into categories of hair colour, none of them would share exactly the same shade of colour. Despite this continuity humans still continue to assign each other to discrete hair-colour categories such as ‘blonde’ or ‘brown’ which have no basis in biology but still go on to determine how that person is thought of in society. The American Psychology Association (APA) provides guidelines for researchers to follow in both research and writing scientifically in order to avoid any form of labelling bias when referring to participants or groups of participants. These guidelines are in place to ensure that the participants within research or experiments are protected against any psychological harm on a personal and emotional level but also from the effects of labelling within society.

Their hard work and dedication to this foundation has made the APA the top scientific organization that represents psychological research in the United States (About APA, n.d.). Since the APA is a large foundation and is made up of individuals who have some of the highest educations in psychology, it can be inferred that their publications are reliable. The American Psychological Association (APA), “a scientific and professional organization,” facilities annual conferences to discuss current events in psychology (APA, 2015, p 1). August 2015 marked the “123rd Annual Convention [in] Toronto, Ontario California” (p. 1). At this convention, Dr. Aaron T. Beck expounded on his 15 year old theory that Cognitive Therapy (CT) was an effective treatment modality for Schizophrenia (p. 2). Consequently, Beck found that CT only showed successful outcomes for mild to moderate Schizophrenia and not severe Schizophrenia (p. 2). Eager to find an effective treatment modality, Beck modified CT to focus specifically on negative cognition which is more severe in individuals with severe Schizophrenia (p. 3).

The American Psychological Association (APA) has created a group of guidelines to assist the psychological practice with older adults.
The American Psychological Association estimates that approximately 90% of all people in the United States will marry by the time they reach the age of 50. Of those, an estimated 40-50% will divorce. Couples that remarry have even higher rates of divorce (http://apa.org/). Of the many potential presenting problems, a research study completed by Miller, Yorgason, Sandberg, and White (2003), found that communication was the most common presenting issue for both spouses. A similar study by Doss, Simpson, and Christenen (2004), identified communication and emotional affection as the leading causes for why couples seek therapy; wives generally reported communication first, while husbands reported emotional affection.
