This paper focuses on the life and history of William Shakespeare. It throws a light on the achievements and contributions of Shakespeare in English literature. Shakespeare was an English playwright and a poet in English literature. Many people read his works widely in the world and enjoyed his characters in his plays. He was very good at understanding the human characters. Four hundred years of the characters in his plays were very natural today. He was the third of eight children. According to the customs of church the baby (infant) has to be baptized after three days of the birth. As per the records in the church the birth day of Shakespeare was 26th April 1564. His parents were John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. They both got married in 1559. Arden was Roman Catholic. She was the daughter of a farmer who has high social rank in the society and John was a glove maker and he has own shop in Stratford upon Avon. After closing theatre, without wasting the time, Shakespeare started writing poems. He wrote two long popular poems “Venus and Adonis and Rape of Lucerne" and dedicated both to Earl of Southampton. He wrote 37 plays. They are divided into Comedies, Histories and Tragedies. Shakespeare had other skills such as music, the law, the Bible, the military, the science, the art, the politics, the sea, the history, the hunting and sports. He had no professional experience except in the field of theatre. He was trained like his fellow workers, first as an actor, second as a reviser of old plays and last as an independent dramatist. He worked with other playwrights and learned their techniques. The period from 1557 to 1611 was an extraordinary period in his literary activity. He wrote several comedies and tragedies. Tragedies made him famous in the world. He wrote 154 sonnets and published in 1609, Thomas Thorpe. He dedicated his sonnets to certain Mr William Herbert as being the only begetter. Shakespeare addressed the second group of his sonnets to "The Dark Lady" Marry Fitton. At the time of Shakespeare’s death 21 plays existed in manuscripts in various theatres. The first printed collection of his plays called the First Pericles (1623) was made by two actors, Heming and Condell.
