There are several treatments for acne scars, but there is no one size fits all treatment. There are four main types of acne scars, including ice pick scars, boxcar scars, rolling scars and keloid stars. The type of scar you have is according to the type of acne you have. Acne is caused when a hair follicle pore becomes clogged with oil, keratin, dead skin cells and bacteria. When the cell is open, it looks black because of dirt and is called a blackhead. When it is white, there is only pus and it is called a whitehead. If the sack of pus bursts, the infection goes deeper into the skin causing papules, nodules, pustules and cysts of acne.

The right treatment for adult acne scars depends on the type of acne you had. After your acne scars are examined by our specialist, one or a combination of the following treatments may be prescribed.

Ablative procedures use heat to remove thin layers of skin, revealing the smoother skin underneath. Non-ablative procedures help activate the natural production of collagen to smoothen the scar.

• Dermabrasion is a procedure that is usually used for severe acne scarring. It removes the top layer of skin with a wire brush on a rapidly rotation device. The surface scars may be completely removed and the deeper scars may be less noticeable.

• Chemical peel is another procedure that removes a top layer of skin. It uses a strong acid to remove the skin, taking away the surface scars and minimizing the deeper scars.

• Needling is a procedure in which a needle-studded device is rolled over your skin stimulating the underlying tissue to produce collagen. This treatment may need to be repeated several times.

• Surgery is for large or deep scars. The surgeon punches out the scar and stitches up the hole or covers it with a skin graft. Another thing a surgeon can do is loosen the scar fibers so the scar is less
