The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum defines this period of time as the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The word Holocaust comes from the greek origin meaning “sacrifice by fire,” but since 1945 this word has been given a completely different meaning, the mass murder of 6 million European Jews. The holocaust was a war between two main parties, the Nazis, who came to power in 1933, and the Jews. Nazis were lead by Adolf Hitler, who had as a motive to kill all minorities in Germany. The Nazis believed they were the superior race and jews were considered to be inferior.

Ian Kershaw empathetically states that “The Holocaust was the systematic, extermination of six million Jews by the Nazi government and their allies during World War II.” He further add that it wasn’t until after Adolph Hitler “became Chancellor of the German government, he began targeting the Jews as racially inferior to the German people (Kershaw, 1985).

Life for the Jews became increasingly worse when the onset of WWII came along in 1939. The Germans began to strip the Jews of their lives, and began deporting (or resettling as the public believed) them to the East to Ghettos and later to concentration and extermination camps. Approximately 6 million Jews were killed, and if the murder of the Romani, Soviet civilians and prisoners, the disabled, homosexuals, and others who apposed to Hitler’s religious, political and social views were counted, this number would be more like 11 to 17 million.
