Robotic Assisted Devices for Older Adult Self Care The United States is faced with many problems concerning the older adult population. A major problem is that many older adults have to be moved to a nursing home because they cannot care for themselves on their own which can be a burden to the older adult. Many families take their older adult family members to nursing homes because they think that the nursing homes can provide better care for them while watching them closer to prevent more downfalls in their health, such as falls, and that the home will be cheaper because of insurance. However, the reality is that their family members may get the medical help and attention that they need but mentally they will become unstable because of their …show more content…
There have been some approaches trying to fix that problem such as assisted living communities and home health care agencies. Assisted living communities are a great idea because they are healthcare providers that offer live in apartments or even homes. They don’t require the level of healthcare such as a nursing home but there are skilled staff members available around the clock ( Kozar-Westman., Troutman-Jordan, and Nies, 2013).The community offers many activities for the older adults to socialize with others but they can always have the comfort of their own living space that is larger than a room in a nursing home. The reason why assisted living communities don’t work for everyone is because it is expensive. The average cost of a one-bedroom apartment is $3,000 per month and unlike nursing homes, Medicare and Medicaid normally don’t pay for assisted living communities ( Kozar-Westman et al., 2013). Another approach is a home health care agency. This approach is great also because it allows the older adult to stay in their own home without moving to an assisted living community because the healthcare goes directly to them daily. Many older adults like this because they don’t have to switch locations and they will a companion with them daily. However, the downfall to home health care agencies are that they are even more expensive than assisted …show more content…
I believe that older adults should be able to live in the comfort of their own homes with the help from robotic assisted devices until they transition from life to death. Many older adults have tried living on their own but the result is that many of them can’t medically take care of themselves. There have been some approaches trying to fix that problem such as assisted living communities and home health care agencies. The problems with both of those approaches were the prices and the fact that many people cannot afford them. However, there has been an improvement to the previous approaches to the problem that is an affordable way for the older adults to be independent. The improvement is that the United States is now starting to utilize the idea of robotic assisted devices or robots that will allow older adults to live on their own by providing the with assistance with food preparation, medication taking, taking care of their healthcare needs, hygiene needs, cleaning up, and being a companion to them. Research in the United States is continuing on the devices within the next ten years (Kantorovitch et al., 2014). It is said that more devices should be developed and within the next 25 years, they should be of use in the home of older adults living on their own providing self-care (Kantorovitch et al.,
The challenge America now faces is the number of people reaching retirement will double in number by 2030, and the U.S. population will increase almost 20 percent ("Our Aging Nation," 2015). The goal is for the elderly to maintain and live with independence and dignity, as well as, provide a wide range of professional health and social service expertise, home care, and residential support and services that will be needed ("Our Aging Nation," 2015). Since the number of caregivers needed for this population will not be able to meet the demands other resolutions are considered necessary.
Assisted living helps each person value life to its fullest potential. When it comes to making an older individual feel more at home and also be able to focus more on non-stressful activities, they need to be ensured the best care. “Families feel more confident and are less ‘protective’ when there is continuity in staff and they are deemed competent. Staff are more likely to be retained where they feel valued”2 part of the quote which is especially conducive to the argument is, “where they feel valued.” When picking and choosing a nursing home that fits individual the best, and will provide them with the care needed, it is important to make sure that everyone is valued in the process. This quote is important because if the workers are not being taken care of, then they are less enthusiastic and also less likely to give someone’s loved one the care needed and to know what is expected from them. It is assumed that when picking an assisted living home, that the well being of the person and also many other characteristics are taken into
Is it worth putting your loved ones in a nursing home facility? According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Each year, hundreds of thousands of adults over the age of 60 are abused, neglected, or financially exploited.” Family members of an elderly person might assume that because they are paying such a large amount of money for assistance and a room in the facility, that they’re getting the best treatment and care for their relative. Although one might believe their loved ones would be better off in a nursing home, they might be putting them at a greater risk of abuse due to understaffing, lack of training within the staff, neglect, nurse burnout, and low wages. 2,150,000 cases
P3: Explain ways in which health and social care workers support the independence and wellbeing of older people. M2: Assess ways in which health and social care workers support the independence and wellbeing of older people. D1: Evaluate ways in which the sectors work together to support the independence and wellbeing of older people. Doris has stayed connected with her friend Frieda who lives on her own independently but recently she has had a fall and she has been referred to the local authorities. P1& M2 When promoting independence and wellbeing in older people it has to be done in a way where the person feels that they are able to do what they are being asked to do and if they say that they don’t
Our elderly population is living longer than ever before and not all of them are entering into a nursing home. They are choosing to stay in their own home or their caregiver is choosing it for them. Some caregivers are choosing to move their ageing love one in the home with them. Whatever the case may be, there is an increased need for some type of home health as it applies to the elderly population. “Medicare will pay the full cost of professional help only if the physician
The decision of whether or not to place an aging parent into a long-term care facility, or to try and to keep them in their own home or yours is one that many American families are facing each day. Factors in dealing with this decision are too numerous to count but we will address a few of them in the following paper, like the financial aspects, psychosocial, and meeting the overall needs of our ever aging parents.
One thing every living organism has in common on this planet-- age. No one wants to age or face the fact that aging is inevitable. However, since it’s impossible to beat the never ending time clock that is life; everyone wants to be as comfortable as possible when age finally does catch up with them. When the majority of people think of comfortability in old age, they think of living in their own homes and being surrounded by their loved ones. Not many individuals want to be placed into a nursing home type facility because they can’t imagine themselves being comfortable that way. Nonetheless, even though being placed in a home does take away some of an elderly person’s independence, usually the independence lost is in activities that person can no longer do for themselves. Indeed, nursing homes do have their own set of scary stories behind them; life lost, independence lost, and privacy lost, yet many of those stories are outdated. Upon investigation, it would be easy for anyone to scare themselves out of a nursing facility due to the stories that are out there. Yet, upon even further research people would be able to see how far the United States has come in their development and evolution of nursing care facilities. The care of the elderly in the form of nursing homes has faced a tough evolution starting off with a harsh past, to what nursing homes are like now, and what people can expect for the future of these homes.
Community care involves different services provided by local communities to assist with individuals who are in a long-term care situation. According to “Administration on Aging,” Congress passed the Older American Act (OAA) in 1965 in response to the concern about a lack of community social services for older persons (2011). The OAA has provided a wide array of services for the organization and delivery of services to the older population and their caregivers. Adult day service programs are designed to provide a place to go while a family caregiver goes to work (“National Clearinghouse for Long Term Care Information,” n.d.). These programs vary by location. Some programs provide health care services, others provide social activities, and there are a few that provide both services. Some social activities include various educational or exercise classes as
The first person or people who should be caring the burden for elderly care lies within their own family. Within the American culture many family members prefer to put their older members in elder homes. My family is originally from Mexico so I am aware of the family values embedded within Mexican culture. I have never seen a Mexican family have their elderly family members live or be taking care of by somebody else that is not a relative. We live in an American society that does not value the care and need for the elderly and prefer to leave up to state and national departments. Since they were the ones who created the generation in which we live in we should be grateful and provide them with the best care possible within our own homes. Many elders who live in homes receive poor or abusive care from faculty. This is not an environment that we should be letting them live in especially if they are your parents. If they lived there lives to watch you grow and take care of you we should be returning them the favor and taking care of them until their final days. The only exception that I have for not taking care of them would be if they have a serious disability or if they are mentally ill. There are illness where the son or daughter of the family member is not able to care for that person because of circumstances that out of their reach. In this situation it would be ok to admit them to home where they are professionally prepared to care for them and have the resources needed
Research show that in 2013, over 9.5% of seniors over the age of sixty-five lived in poverty with the percentage increasing as an individual’s age increases (McNeal, 2016). These statistics does not account for the other issues which affects families and caretakers when addressing the well-being of their loved ones and the inadequate access to long term care.
Activities of Daily Living can include just that, such as cooking/eating, bathing, personal care, toileting and help with medications. This around the clock care can be quite expensive for anyone, especially those who have already retired and were living on a fixed income, including retirement and social security. In the facility that I observed to live on the skilled care side and receive care twenty four hours a day seven days a week in a semi private room (double occupancy room), the cost was nearly $11,000 a month for each resident. The average cost across the country is $248 per day for a private room and $222 daily for a semi-private room (Costs Of Care), which for a private room can add up to over $90,000 a year. While that number is quite high assisted living can be much cheaper, at an average of $3,300 a month for the “base fee”, however each additional service that they require help from staff to complete is an additional fee. In the facility observed there was a fee for every action that staff completed or assisted with, including assistance with medication, trash, cleaning, and applying treatments such as a breathing machine. Though the cost may seem high many who do not have children or other family members to help provide care for themselves or have a condition that cannot be managed at home (due to physical or financial restraints) have no choice but to enter a long term care facility to receive help completing tasks needed for simple
There may come a time in your loved one's life when they are no longer able to perform all of the tasks they used to without assistance. Despite their need for support, your senior loved one may decide they want to remain at home and enjoy their independence and freedom. While nursing homes and assisted living facilities serve a certain segment of the population quite well, others enjoy the quality of life that comes from living in their own home. For families that are able to provide the necessary care, arrangements can be made to make this work. Others, however, are left wondering how their senior loved one is going to receive the service and support they require to remain safe. Thankfully,
We live in a day and age where most Canadians do not concern themselves with the odds of them being placed in a long-term care facility due to the presence of our health care system, however, a greater number of individuals should be more cogitative about the possibility of needing to be put in a home and that not being an immediate option. According to the Ontario Long Term Care Association (2015) over 40% of the long-term care homes in Ontario are small, with 96 or fewer beds. With the aging of the baby boomers within the next couple of years, 96 beds are simply not enough. The hardship of leaving the comfort of one’s home is stressful enough, without having to worry whether or not there will be open availability in the local nursing home. This report examines
One of the most stressful things you may have to go through as your loved one ages is the realization that they can no longer safely remain fully independent. Since the topic of moving into an assisted living situation or arranging in home care is touchy, many people avoid it as long as they can. Yet, if your loved one's health, safety, or general welfare is at risk, then a conversation really needs to be held in the immediate future.
Many Americans live with self-care disabilities. The Americans who chose to remain home is increasing as the cost of assisted living facilities increases. The decision to remain in home stimulates from the increasing cost of assisted living facilities as well as the ease of remaining in a familiar environment. Though the decision brings challenges, many Americans chose to seek in-home assisted living services. As the demand for assisted living requirements increases it is evident that there is a consumer need and a business opportunity to meet the needs of those consumers, (US Census Bureau, 2006).
