I would like to further explain my interest in becoming a participant in the Teach for America program. It stems from my own personal experience of obtaining my degree and my pursuit of higher education. It is already known that one’s financial status can greatly affect how far you can go, the resources that become readily accessible are far and few, even with such advancements in technology and programs available to assist, it takes a person of fierce, stead-fast determination to navigate the systemic hurdles that were placed in my way. The many obstacles I have faced as a young African-American woman in New York are on par for the norm these days and it is because of them that I feel I would be not only a great candidate but an asset to this program. …show more content…
I hope I will be able to divulge to them many of the resources I myself have utilized to obtain my goals. Programs such as the Equal Opportunity Program which I was able to use to assist in my quest for higher education, but I would not have known about had I not had a guidance counselor provide this information to me, information on different career opportunities and how to draw on ones on skills and passions to obtain your own personal success is something I would really love to impress upon these students given the
The number of two-parent African American households is dissolving. According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the black family has declined from 80% in 1890 to 39% in 1990. The result of conflict, and warring souls in the African American community, this trend can be stopped and reversed. The African American family must first gain an understanding of what is causing this dissolution, then they can be taught about what principals and skills they must adapt in order to reverse it. Once this is accomplished, the black family must be given opportunities to share this information. By taking these steps, two-parent African American families would once again be prevalent in the United States.
The achievements for which the graduation speaker praises recent graduates from the narrator’s school differ from the narrator’ hopes for herself and her classmates in the aspect of success and achievements. The speaker praises the whites when it comes to being successful in their field of endeavor and always given the priority in many facets of life. He even gave the bragging rights for them. He made them feel the racial discrimination where whites are being favored over the blacks like them. They get all the attentions and assistance unlike the colored people who are not given the good opportunities for their future. The whites make sure that they are superior in every step of the
“The soul was the body that fed the tobacco, and the spirit was the blood that watered the cotton, and these created the first fruits of the American garden” (Coates 104). In Between the World and Me,” and within this quote alone, Ta-Nehisi Coates argued not only the importance of black identity, but also how and why black identity was so deceivingly shaped in response to the dark history behind it. Through Coates’ recollections and fair warnings to his son, the relationship between black identity and “The Dream” becomes clearer. In spite of the “white supremacist” trademark that comes stamped upon “The Dream,” Coates provides impermeable evidence as to why black identity is not only more invested in history than white identity, but more importantly why it is the investment to be made in “The American Dream.”
Being a woman living in America is not only a task but a daily job. Women in the United States are not held to the same standards as men but are expected to work just as hard as a man to work in a higher role that has normally dominated by men. Women have to appear just a tough as a man if not tougher, show no emotion and also think like a man.

Despite the large amount of stereotypes and disdain held for black people, being African American is something that I have become extremely proud of. My deep seeded pride stems from the accomplishments of my ancestors and the immense amount of responsibility placed on my shoulders as a black person. As a people, African Americans have endured and persevered through a large part of history where they have been mistreated and exploited by others countries. Therefore, when I look back at the lives of my ancestors, I am humbled, as I see the enormous amount of perseverance and fortitude needed to get through through the times they lived through. Moreover, I am astonished when I look at their accomplishments such as the White House, the Washington
As far as American society has progressed we will always have a long way to go with the treatment of others, but it is always important to remember how far society has gone The civil rights were about the treatment of the underrepresented and the people with less privilege than the majority, with this you can tell that those people wanted change and change is what they fought for. The problem with civil rights is that the people who want change are minorities as in “people who have fewer rights, power, population, etc.” that means governments can easily ignore their calls for change because the system is fine. People in power can easily say that minorities have no say in what the majority does, so the Majority stays in power denying equal rights

I seek to join Teach for America because of the challenges I faced while in high school. My high school was in a low income community but as a student I never felt like I could not do something because of my parent financial status. My mother is a single parent that worked in my school cafeteria. My family couldn’t afford to spend money on things that wasn’t a necessity. So I did not own the name brand clothes or the
Throughout the rollercoaster of a ride the past two years have been, I have been involved in a numerous amounts of extracurricular activities ranging from volunteering, babysitting, and of course, athletics. Most notably have been my contributions via athletics. Besides being a member of the varsity football team my sophomore to senior year (while being a captain my senior year) and a member of the varsity track team my senior year, being in these sports has given me many opportunities to give back to my community. Football players are not known to be the brightest of the bunch and often times, need an extra hand in academics. During my sophomore and junior year, I tutored a few of my fellow teammates to insure they got their G.P.A up and was able to compete on friday nights. In track, I did many fundraisers and similar dog sitting friends and family. Other extracurriculars I have done the past 2 years include being nominated for the National Society of High School Scholars and the
From there, I would have them right down something they struggle with and how they may be able to help themselves get past their own personal struggle (SS1.3). I want my students to know that whatever it is they are going through, they are not alone. There is someone else out there who is struggling with the same issue that they are, and in that they can find a friend to confide in.
