I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn’t …. The pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of my enmity without looking further” – Mark Twain
According to Alex Gordon’s 2005 book, Animal rights: The argument of animal testing, animal testing was first discovered in 1859 by Charles Darwin to help him understand the human body. Since then, animals have been subjected to millions of test each and every year (p. 2). Everything from perfume to hand soap is tested on animals to see if it cause any harmful effects to humans. Animal testing involves inducing chemicals or substances

It is dangerous and to put it simply, moronic to apply data from one species to another, but yet billions of dollars of research are spent on animal testing each year. There are countless examples where animals provide different results than humans for a particular experiment. For instance, penicillin has saved millions of lives since its induction in 1928, but it severely harms and will kill cats and guinea pigs. Next, morphine is a sedative for the human body while it is a stimulant for goats, horses, and cats. Also, the drug Strychnine kills humans but not monkeys, and Belladonna is deadly to humans yet harmless to rabbits. Once again, research findings in other species cannot be automatically distributed to humans.
Next, animal testing is cruel and inhumane towards the animals being tested on. According to Overton’s 2006 article, “It’s not just cruel, it’s ineffective,” the Animal Welfare Act requires all laboratories to keep a count on the animals used in testing, but this act does not require scientists to count mice, rats, and birds which are used in about 80% to 95% (p. 5). Because these animals are not covered and remain uncounted, millions of these animals could have suffered without knowing. Thousands of cosmetics and household products are tested on animals each day, most of them causing the animal severe pain. Most of the products do not work on the first trial and cause
From when you are a baby to when you are an adult animal testing is used in your everyday products. From the Pampers you put on as a baby and the Johnson and Johnson you are washed with. To when you are older the Febreeze, Sunsilk, and Gillette you use.( Companies That do Test on Animals) Animal testing surrounds you in every act of life. “The guess is around 100 million animals are used worldwide in animal testing.” (Animal Rights) Animal testing is rooted from natural curiosity. How the insides of a living organism operate and look is an interesting idea. Because of the fact that dissection of humans was illegal by the Roman Church, animals were the second best option for knowledge of living organisms. (Animal Testing) The debate
Picture yourself in a testing laboratory; needles, drugs, and knives pointed in your direction with you having no idea what’s going on around you, this is how animals everyday are treated, we have to stop this now! Millions of animals are killed in laboratories everyday with no chance to object to what the testers are about to do to them. Animals feel as much pain as humans do so why does it make it okay to test on them when they are so alike to humans? Every day people test makeup, shampoos, and medicines on animals, the strange thing is that animals have different skin, hair, and internal organs than humans have. Since the animals have different internal organs than humans only 5-25% of the testing results are agreeable between animals
There is much debate over whether animal testing should be allowed or not. Some people think that it is not essential to sacrifice animals for human benefits because they are being abused and tortured severely during experiments. Some others who stand against animal testing claim that humans eliminate many lives on earth in order to safe humans’ lives, so there is no justice because even animals have the right to live on earth, yet these people do not consider the truth that animals are being used in the food industry or in the laboratories. Thus, if someone asks how many animals are being used in the laboratory experiments around the world every year, who can give an accurate answer? It can be one, ten, or fifty million. It is difficult to find the exact figure on this question because people only read news through mass media such as having a new vaccine which can help human avoid uterus cancer or a new medicine help humans cure strokes, but they also need to know how many lives of the animals would have to take in order to get theses vaccines. Therefore, some organizes think that animal testing is one of the most disturbing experiments ever, and it should be banned. Despite many controversies with opposing opinions, a compromise can be made in order to reduce the use of animals in the laboratory experiments.
What exactly is animal testing and the history behind it? Animal testing is defined as, “An animal test is any scientific experiment or test in which a live animal is forced to undergo something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm”(“What”). Many of these animals live in a laboratory that is usually inside. Sometimes these animals live by themselves. The animals involved in animal testing are usually vertebrate animals such as mammals. In the United States they use rats, mice, fish and birds. In the United States if they want to test on a new animal
Animal testing protests have had a long and turbulent history. This argument is one that has been debated since the early 1960’s. It all began when animal rights activists began to take interest in the ethics, or lack thereof, of testing animals for scientific and cosmetic studies. Some of these activists call for researchers to ensure that all of their animals are humanely cared for, while other activists called for the complete end of animal testing. These debates would continue on into the 21st century. Since the inception of this debate there have been factions of radical activists, such as the Animal Rights Miltia, that focus on direct action, performing actions ranging from breaking and entering to arson and car bombings. The issue
One day, a kid named Johnny had Parkinson’s disease. But, he was cured just in time due to animal testing. Yes, animal testing saved lives, yet many people do not believe in the importance of doing testing on animal test subjects to find the effectivity of the product. However, it is way more true that animal testing is not cruel, and it should remain legal. My reasons for saying this is that animal testing has made a major impact in the medical field, animals in testing receive the highest standards of care provided by law, and finally animals and humans have a lot more in common that meets the eye, making tests accurate.
Animals are used by scientists to develop research for new medications and experiments daily. The Humane Society is working to decrease the use of animals in laboratories by promoting the advancement of affective alternative approaches. Animal testing provides a useful model for treatments of diseases and possible cures. According to the US-based foundation of Biomedical Research, animal testing has made a major advance within the last century- for veterinary health and humans. The practice of using animals for testing has been debated for many decades. Is it morally right or wrong to use animals during experiments? Does federal law ensure that animals used in research are treated humanely? When considering the benefits of animal testing,
Scientists putting animals through suffrage through medical research, but in any case, it’s not contested, but on a scale it often is. Some people know that there can be an up and downstream of whether animal experimentation is a part of good science and also result in medical breakthroughs for humans. Depending on whether the progress may have achieved by any means. Millions of animals each year in the United States are experimented on for testing to help find cures and medicine for sick people/patients. Toxicity of medicine is put into animals and take the risk of whether the tests are successful or not so that people can research further more. Research is led into saving lives, but what about the ones that are tested for hours on end and
Animal testing has been going on for a long time. Many scientists believe it is necessary for scientific discovery, however, animal lovers like me, disagree with these so called "geniuses" and want to put a stop to this madness that makes us all disgusted. Animal testing isn't what it's cracked up to be at all! Humans just keep on taking advantage of the weak and it makes me wonder what scientists have done, and are doing to other species of animals in their brutal horrific tests. I personally have no idea how just a kid like myself could stop such a big issue in society today. Protesting against these evil scientists will most likely just cause a seine and even then no one will listen to just me.
Vivisection or the use of live animals for testing is used for many experiments including cosmetic testing and psychological. Vivisection has been used by researchers since 500 BC and many life-saving treatments have been developed this way (animal-testing.procon.org).
Animals all over the world are being mistreated and abused, what have we done to help them? Over many years animal testing has developed life saving techniques. Though it has taken the lives of over 2.6 million animals lives just in the us alone. Animal testing is a growing issue throughout the entire world, not only is it affecting the lives of the animals, but the people who use the products too. It may not physically be hurting them, but more so emotionally. The moral issue is that no animal has a voice and we need to speak up for them.
Animal testing has started long back in the ancient Greek times. Greek physician Galen dissected animals, this became known as vivisection, which he studied. Since then animal testing has long grew. Over the many years our people have been either against or with animal testing. Animal testing has been an issue that has been occurring for many years and will continue into our future. Over the years our culture has created organizations for people both sides of this topic trying to convince others to be choosing a side. We the people are now able to make our own decision on which side we want to be on.
When you go shopping for mascara, perfume, lotion etc, do you ever stop and think what product you're using? You may be supporting animal testing and not even realize it. Many of the products we use on an everyday basis are tested on animals first before getting into our hands. Not only that, every year millions of animals are hurt and killed for the purpose of advancement in science, household products, cosmetic companies, and educational institutions. Animal testing is wrong and inhumane! Animals should not be treated bad, or undergo any pain, just to make a human's life “better”. Many people believe this is the way to go just because they're “just animals” but they don't see that animals feel everything a human does, and it's sad because they can't speak for themselves, they are helpless and defenseless!
Animal testing, although a controversial topic, affects a great deal of scientists and the work force in the agriculture field. This topic has proven difficult to communicate to one another about because there are individuals that believe animals should have certain rights and others believe that animals have no rights. Our group wanted to research this topic because we want to gain knowledge and become more understanding toward the people on both sides of the spectrum. Digging more into the research we found that cosmetics, medical use, and food are the most widely used methods for experimentation. With these research fields, people are finding ways to appeal to the ethics of the modern-day consumer.
Animal experimentation is testing on animals such as guinea pigs, chimpanzees, rats, birds, and many other species, to find new medical discoveries and test new products for safety before sold for human consumption. Ever since ancient Greek times, animal testing has been used to learn more about the anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology of human beings. It wasn’t until 2011, when US Senator Maria Cantwell brought up the issue of animal experimentation in a bill called S. 810, the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. This law would have prohibited scientists from owning or performing any invasive testing on apes, or any other species of monkeys. It would have also stopped federal funding for all of the testing and required all organizations that owned the apes to retire them. Animal testing has now become a topic of discussion and debate among the government and medical researchers. However, due to the fact that animal testing is a waste of money, ethically wrong, and puts a limitation on knowledge of human anatomy, animal experimentation should not be legal.
