Agriculture: Evolution or Devolution?
Considering that the alarming excess and continuing growth of the current world population (of humans) is directly tied to food production and availability, the question of how and why we even developed the technology of agriculture in the first place is becoming more and more relevant to human survival as we collectively continue to destroy the environment in which we live due in part to these very agricultural techniques and strategies that we are continuing to employ today. Paul R. Ehrlich finds much fault with the way humans are in his eyes well on the path to self-destruction through population explosions and irresponsible use of technologies. But when he goes on to examine the non-technological aspects of the human self-destructive patterns, he explores possibilities of humans having a natural tendency towards violence (Ehrlich, 210). Even though he does not agree with the view that humans are genetically prone to do acts of violence, and acknowledges that there are different kinds of and reasons for violence, his assertion that the roots of this destructiveness lie in culture present another problem (Ehrlcih, 226). The problem is that this puts all the human beings who are born to and participate in this culture, whether willingly or not, into one category of humans who are essentially deficient, if not because of their genes, then because of their culture, and this leaves no room for the collection of individuals who feel uncomfortable within such a culture. For example, though I do not want to endorse a society that puts money and egocentric ideology above and beyond all else, in a way I am doing just that by typing these words on my power-consuming computer (which is already an outdated one even though purchased only a year and a half ago), or by buying my food, which is frequently packaged in plastics or metals
Farming has been a source of work ever since man has been introduced to the earth, but the past 100 years have been promising in continuing to provide for the needs of the growing population. The people have become more educated, and technology has become much more advanced. The two have come together to boon the land and animals so that they produce to their fullest potential. The people of the world have been influenced to the extent that they work smarter not harder to provide for the growing population. Most people would argue that the transition from hunting and gathering of food to agricultural food production was the best innovation in human history. We are taught to believe that this innovation gave rise to civilization, allowed for more leisure time in which people could then focus on arts and allowed for a higher yielding, more consistent and reliable food source. Despite some of the innovations that sprang from agriculture, upon a closer look, we can see that with the advent of agriculture came class division, gender inequality, less leisure time, overpopulation, diseases, deficient diets and starvation. The transition from hunting and gathering to agricultural food production may have been the worst mistake in human history.

The replacement of the idle fallow with crops constituted the Agricultural Revolution. It was important because the new types of crops made allowed farmers to feed their animals more, which led to a greater amount of meat and improved diets. It had the greatest effect in England and the Low Countries.
Instinctivist theories on human aggressiveness often promote the notion that warfare is in the nature of humankind and therefore cannot be prevented. However Margaret Mead eloquently refuted this idea in her renowned essay Warfare: an Invention – Not a Biological Necessity. Mead states, “War is inevitable unless we change our social system and outlaw classes, the struggle for power, and possessions; and in the event of our success warfare would disappear, as a symptom vanishes when the disease is cured.” Through this statement Mead makes it clear that because aggression and subsequently warfare is a learned invention, it can be avoided. For the purposes of this essay, aggression will be defined as “a response that delivers noxious stimuli to another organism.” This essay will outline how and why aggression, and thus warfare, is not biological and is rather a behaviour that is learned as a reaction to social stimuli. Furthermore, it will be explained that violence is used by societies as a political weapon to achieve ostensible objectives.
Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth century, a lack of a consistent and reliable food supply in Britain led to a rise in prices that threatened the lives of many poor British people; the poor could not obtain food regularly due to the rise in food prices and thus, only could survive through charity. On the other hand, the rise in prices put landlords in better financial situations and caused them to make innovations in farming to further increase their agricultural profit; these innovations in farming became known as the Agricultural Revolution. In the beginning of mankind's evolutionary history, being nomadic was a common practice of living because following migratory herds and gathering for other edible plants was a necessity for survival. It wasn’t until approximately 8,000 B.C. when people started to learn how to grow crops in a single spot without soil depletion and thus, agriculture was born. (New World Encyclopedia 2015) This major advancement in humankind allowed humans to form civilizations and transformed the way humans live that is the sprawling society that exists today. In the 1930's, V. Gordon Childe proposed that the shift to food production was one of the two major events in human history that improved the condition of human societies. Childe described the origins of agriculture as a 哲eolithic Revolution.But the shift from hunting and gathering to food production was not as advantageous to humanity as Childe believed. Although there were benefits, there were also serious drawbacks, and humans paid a price for the advantages of agriculture.
The agriculture field is one of the biggest employers, employing over 155 million people in the United States. What do you think about when you hear the word “agriculture?” Many people would say farming, but this is not the most common occupation in this field. Farmers make up a fraction of the agricultural jobs at 900,000, but over 2.1 million people own, rent, and claim farming as a primary source of income. The average farm size has dropped from 460 acres in 1990 to 418 acres in 2007, while the average age of this occupation rose to 57, making this one of the older workforces in the United States.
The revolutionizing transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture was a central shift in the way homo sapiens lived that occurred twelve thousand years ago. Consequently, several factors contributed to this astonishing modification of life including increasing population size, favorable environments such as the Nile River in Egypt and the Fertile Crescent in the Mediterranean. Food is essential to any living organism, providing energy for our production and nutrients for our protection. Without this fundamental element, life cannot exist. Our lack to produce our own energy, like plants, causes us to become dependent on others for survival. Humans existence is attributed only to the million years of evolution our food source underwent to sustain our survival. Changing the primary nature of our food source, whether it is plant or animal, directs mankind in a dangerous future if our food dependency is permanently hampered. In this unit’s text, we learned about modernization of society and how agriculture permitted nomadic hunt-and-gather groups to become stabilized and centralized in one location. The text and supporting video clips introduced both positive and negative anthropological effects of the rise of agriculture. Three positive outcomes include stabilization, improved nutrition, and food surplus. For each of these positive instances, there is an alternate and negative impact as well: habitat destruction, feast and famine cycles, and health concerns. This essay will briefly expound on each positive outcome and its counterpart, and will relate the sustainable agrarian achievements of the people of the Gamo Highlands to these effects.
