I was very one sided as I walked into a AA meeting. I thought that the meeting where boring and little bit too much for people who wont to stop drinking. I couldn’t understand why people look forward to these meeting when they can simply talk to someone at home. Nevertheless, I was wrong. Hearing these people story who suffer from alcohol addiction was very heart breaking. I remember one story about this man losing his son to car accident. The only way he dealt with the pain of losing his son was to drink. He stated ever night he drunk him self-asleep. He was so adamant about telling his story because if it wasn’t for the hospital staff he would have lost his life. Many people, including alcoholics, are not fully aware of the devastation caused by alcohol abuse. Not only does alcohol have an impact on physical health, it causes a host of problems from a mental and emotional standpoint. This addiction is not only harmful to the body, it tears families apart, leads to job loss, and often causes isolation for the person who drinks.

Hospital nursing professionals are faced with many stressful situations in the workplace and at home. Some nurses try to cope with stress by turning to alcohol. In my professional opinion, alcohol should never be used as a coping mechanism. Eventually one or two alcoholics drinks a week turn into daily excessive and uncontrollable use. Impairment at work leads to an inability to critically think and make safe decisions. Alcohol impairment slows reaction time and alters judgement (CDC, 2016). These symptoms lead to a dangerous environment for the patient, other staff members and anyone having contact with the intoxicated nurse (CDC, 2016).

While consumption of alcohol is a socially acceptable practice in our society, issues arise when abuse occurs. Donatelle and Thompson (2011) define alcohol abuse as the "excessive consumption or a level of consumption that interferes with work, school, or social and family relationships" (256). As with other drug addictions, this abuse is disruptive to the alcohol abusers life as well as to those close to them.
