More often than not, people tell me that I am a negative person, or like the famous song lyric in the new broadway hit musical, Hamilton, “I will never be satisfied.” They were right, I may never be satisfied, but to me that a characteristic to be proud of. Whatever it may be that I am working on: a song, a painting, or even an essay, it can always be better. Hamilton has changed my life by showing me how someone who came from nothing can make a huge difference just by standing up for what they believe in. Just for saying, “this is not good enough, let’s do something to make it better.” Swinging my chair from side to side, I restlessly sat at my desk at home, finishing up a paper for history. People have told me all of my life that I am too argumentative and that I should keep my opinions to myself. After listening to Hamilton, I realized that they were wrong. If I had the power to change something, or to at least introduce a new perspective, why should I remain silent? Why was it wrong to stand up for what I believe? This musical helped me gain confidence because I could relate to a character more than I ever have before, his success reassuring me. Alexander Hamilton was similar to me because he argued for what he believed was right, stopping at nothing. Mediocrity could not satisfy Hamilton and he rose from his circumstances as an orphan immigrant to make an impression, later heading the treasury of the United States in its formation.
