The personal psychological factors that helped make Alexander the Great an effective military leader is his ambition, insight, and his perseverance. His ambition is shown through his desire to defeat the Persians and spread the Greek way of life throughout the world. This desire of conquest and revenge show his ambition and more importantly this desire led to him having a level of insight, concept of moral, and perseverance that helped him to defeat Tyre. Tyre is located about a half a mile away from shore and due to his lack of a navy Alexander had to come up with creative ways to defeat Tyre. One of the key moves that he did was to make a land bridge by using the natural resources around him to help his soldiers reach the impenitrable wall that surrounded Tyre. The first time that Alexander built the bridge it was destroyed due to a ship that was full of flammable objects and charcoal burning down the foundations of the bridge. This resulted in Alexander thinking of a different way to build the bridge in order to prevent the …show more content…
The second tactic that he used was to build ceilings to shield his soldiers that were building the bridge from arrow attacks. Another tactic that he used was to build seige towers that had the tortion catapault on it in order to attack the wall with his catapault and be able to invade his enemy. As a result to Alexander successfully countering the attacks of the Tyrians they desided to gather a whole fleet to attack his army and the bridge in a last effort to counter his efforts but due to Alexander's insight he gathered a fleet of his own that came up behind the Tyrian fleet and destroyed it. This resulted in the completion of the bridge, breaching the Southern wall of the port and also the success of the seige on
Alexander the Great, born of King Philip of Macedonia, was one of the greatest conquerors of history. In my opinion, Alexander was a great leader and warrior. For example, in Document B, Alexander used strategy to win over a battle. The strategy he used was complicated, but well thought out; Alexander moved his troops in all different directions to keep Porus puzzled, and took his cavalry to various points along the river bank where he would create a war cry so that Porus would parallel the movements on the other sides of the river until he no longer responded. Now Porus elephants were boxed in, and the elephants trampled their own men because they had no driver's upon them. In this way Alexander won a battle, and through his cleverness, he
Alexander knew that if he was not going to come up with a way to puzzle his enemy that otherwise he could possibly lose all of his land. Alexander was creative the time when he puzzled Porous. Alexander saw that Porous had elephants. “He realized that he could not cross at the point where Porous was encamped-his elephants were to numerous.” (Doc B). So that night Alexander sent troops in all different directions and when Porous heard different sounds from all different directions that made Porous puzzled and made him quit. (Doc B). This evidence explains how Alexander was great because that was a very smart move to make someone quit fighting against you before the war has even started. Just because you are the little guy doesn’t mean you just give
When Alexander was on his journey, they had to walk through the desert with no water for a long time. But, that didn’t stop him, he made himself and his crew keep up with him. In document D, it states that Alexander and his crew found water and they all shared it, but Alexander poured it out and told them to keep moving (Doc D). Alexander also suffered severe wounds from his journey but that didn’t stop him (BGE). He must of wanted this achievement so bad that even pain didn’t bother him. This evidence explains why Alexander was great because it shows that he kept going through harsh conditions and harsh times. He must of had courage to keep going to reach his life
One reason Alexander was great, was because he was a military genius. As stated in document B, “When Alexander saw this, he decided to move his troops in all different directions so that Porus would be puzzled…(Doc B)”.
The achievements of Alexander were one reason for his greatness. Document A states that he had led 40,000 soldiers, conquering land from Macedonia to Asia, winning five major battles on the way. Someone who takes land, wins battles, and led a large army, proves their greatness, helping his army and his people. A second example of Alexander's great achievements is the square miles in total that he had covered.
First of all, Alexander was great because of his intelligence. Alexander showed intelligence when he was about to go to battle with Porus, but he made a choice to turn around with his troops and go the other way so it would confuse Porus. In document B it says this when it says “When Alexander saw this, he decided to move his troops in all different directions so
Alexander the Great was undoubtedly one of the greatest military leaders of all time. Alexander’s strategy was to use terror and kindness to conquer an empire. The towns and cities that resisted him would burn to the ground and their people sold into slavery. The towns and cities that surrendered would keep their government officials, and Alexander would help them rebuild damaged property. This strategy allowed him to never lose a battle.
Alexander was a good general, he won lots of wars, and had great strategies. The article states,”He realized that he could not cross at the point… When Alexander saw this, he[decided] move his troops in all different directions so that Porus would keep puzzled,”(Arrianus, Document B). Alexander had a good idea, if Porus and Alexander went head on head it would be even but, if Alexander could attack Porus from all different sides he has an advantage. The article says,”At night he would take most of his cavalry to various points along the river bank where he would create a clamour, raise the war cry and produce all other such noises as would come from men preparing to cross river,”(Arrianus, Document B). Alexander made the noise so Puros would get his men ready for war but, Alexander figured out Porus movements, and he could then send his troops to attack Porus. Alexander was a great conquer because he had so many great strategies when he went into war, helping him expand his vast
In document C it states “In the end, however, the causeway was completed and Alexander’s army smashed into the city.”, this is saying that even if the fight was 7 months he would never quit (Doc C). While on the move back to Greece Alexander’s followers wanted to quit and didn’t want to go on, so some stayed behind while he went on and “conquered the world” (Doc F). “At the time, Persia was probably the most powerful kingdom in the world. This mattered little to Alexander. Using his disciplined cavalry and infantry in both ways, Alexander fought his way through lands controlled by Persia - across Asia Minor, down the Mediterranean coast, into Egypt, and then to Mesopotamia. There he defeated a huge Persian army at Gaugamela.” (BGE). This quote is saying that even though Persia may be strong and powerful Alexander would still get his way wherever he went. This evidence helps explain why Alexander was great because when going through the difficult parts of his battles he would always stay strong and brave through it all despite the hard
Alexander never lost a battle. He conquered much of the Ancient world, and only surrendered his goals when his army was not ready to fight. As seen in document A, his empire was huge and unmatched by any in history. He also achieved what many thought was impossible; he defeated the robust Persian army. Alexander's remarkable achievements are a result of his courage and determination, leading him to his outstanding battle record.
A final reason Alexander is great is his military. Alexander moved his troops in different directions. The enemy wouldn’t expect it. Alexander moved his troops to the river bank, and he took most of his cavalry. “ He would create a clamour, raise the war cry and produce all other such noises as would come from men preparing to cross the river” (Doc B).
Evidence of this is that many of his enemies would surrender before the war began if they heard rumors about a possible attack on their empire (Doc C). Next, Alexander had one of the biggest empires ever as it stretched across 2,000,000 square feet of land! His empire also continued to grow as he went along his conquest, it took 11 years to reach full potential in size and strength (Doc E). The intense and well taught warriors are on last reason he had a very strong empire, Alexander recruited and highly endured his men to their full capability (Doc D). This evidence clearly states that Alexander the Great lived up to his name. These reasons also show that he was a smart leader and general, had a great and feared reputation from enemies and allies, and Alexander strived for full
Alexander had been taught many things from a very young age such as academic subjects, politics, sports, and warfare which made him think very highly of himself. His father Philip of Macedonia made an extremely strong army and took over many Greek polises and wanted to take over the Persian Empire. This struck Alexander’s aspiration to take over the Persian Empire as well. Alexander then inherited his father’s kingdom at the age of 18 after his father
Later on in his life, Alexander continued to show his ability to accomplish many difficult tasks. "After three grueling years of warfare and three decisive battles, Alexander smashed the Persian armies at the Tigris River and conquered the mighty Persian Empire, including the legendary city of Babylon" (“Alexander the Great” ushistory.org). This was a great victory that proved Alexander had what it took to be a great leader. Defeating the Persians was something many leaders could never do, but Alexander
Alexander the Great inherited one of the most powerful armies in the ancient world from his father Philip. The army used a unique spear phalanx that was virtually unheard of outside of Macedonia, and the army was well trained and supported. Additionally Philip felt the use of siege weaponry was of great importance and invested in engineers to aid him. Philip even used siege weaponry on the field in battle some times. Philip set the stage for his son to dominate the known world, and even gave him a road map for conquering Asia minor, but an army and siege weapons are only a portion of an armies success. Especially when planning a long protracted campaign far from home.
