Alice Heroes Today

The heroes are like other human beings but have either done something which makes them excel over others or have a gift that others do not possess.

Alice made multiple significant decisions because of what she believed in. Alice believed that she had more opportunity running away with Isaac than she did staying in Maryland; Alice ran away from with Isaac in parts 3 and 4 of The Fight. Alice later got caught and recalled “They beat me. I remember, the dogs, the rope… They tied me behind a horse and I had to run but I couldn’t.” (page 158). If Alice had not run away, Rufus would not have had to buy her, and Haager would not have been born.

“She thinks of when she fought a flood…There are some things a bushwoman just cannot do… she cried then.” The woman crying shapes our understanding of her mental strength, after everything living in the bush has thrown at her, being reduced to tears and physically beaten she stays strong. Willing to endure even more the environment can throw at her. Burton also uses flashbacks to add depth to Alice’s character; the flashbacks are symbolic of the decline in her imagination, her willingness to try the ‘impossible’ and a symbol of her conformity. These flashbacks are also a sad reminder of the passing of her father; he was one to encourage the use of her imagination and believing in impossible things. Her current adventure in Underland is very different to the first because she has forgotten to believe in the impossible; once she crosses this barrier Absolum confesses she is again the ‘real Alice’.

Princess Alice is a great granddaughter of Victoria and mother of prince Phillip. She was helping hide the children of the Greek royal family from the Nazis. Rachel was her mother. The Red Queen’s character is seen as an antagonist, the opposing force to Alice’s adventures. Upon their first encounter in this story the queen explains the rules of her kingdom as like the rules of a game of chess, as a story and game of advancement and promotion. Alice is like a pawn piece and can move up the board in such a way that she too can become the queen, like as in chess the queen can move effortlessly in whatever manner she likes. The queen perturbs Alice into an endless run with Alice having no real direction of where she is heading and meeting other strange characters along the way which develops her idea of the impossible being possible.

Alice faces the two Queens in each image. On her right side, she has the White Queen while on her left the Red Queen. Psychologically and physically, Alice is stuck between these two personalities. Right is known as positive and fortunate; the left signifies negative and awfulness from psychological point of view. Alice has already decided to choose White Queen on her right. Finally, Alice shows a different perception from the creatures in her many encounters with the queen. The animals and creatures show much fear of the queen. Her frequent orders of beheading intimidate them. Towards the end of the story, Alice is in the courtroom. She is quite angered at how the queen treats others. While the animals and creatures and creatures fear her, Alice does not. At an earlier point, she also feared the queen. While in court her anger builds up “she is completely, and a palpable threat to the court.”(Blake 7). She even goes so far as telling them they are “nothing but a pack of cards “ (Carroll 140). On our everyday, we are surrounded by heroes. A hero is a person who has special abilities in helping others and in thinking about others priorities before their own. Classical heroes are super humans that are brave, that use their abilities to help other, that go on a journey, and in some point of their life they have a revelation about their true identity as a hero. Modern-day heroes are average people, that face challenges and have problems to which people can relate. They don't go on the classical heroes' physical journey; they go on an internal one. They also care about others' problems and are always ready to help. Emma Watson is a perfect example of a hero. She relates to a classical hero because she is brave, she likes helping people that needs her help and she uses her power, influence, to help other people. Emma Watson can also be seen as a hero because she goes on multiple journeys during her life. She relates to a modern-day hero because she started her life as an average person, faces daily challenges, and she helps others. Overall, Emma Watson can be seen as a hero because of several aspects.
