You ever wonder how some people interpret things differently? That's a mystery to most, but Alice Walker allows us to view her story in a way were we all get the same idea. "Everyday Use" is a short story written by Alice Walker which uses symbolism, imagery, and allegory. It was an interesting and exceptional piece regarding quilts and family history. It also features an exotic use of literary terms.
One literary term that was used is symbolism. The quilts that they mention are important to the Johnson family history and heritage. They were handmade by the narrator, her sister, and her mother, and they're comprised of clothing worn by generations of family members. An object can be used to symbolize a piece of family history and the quilt was a part of Maggie's history. Maggie and Dee are certainly not close or even similar. Dee seems only to pay attention to Maggie when she has something to gain. The mother reports that she thought Dee “hated” Maggie, that is, until the family and church began raising money for her education.

We technically don't see any real-live animals in the story, but Walker relies on animal imagery to show us the important. She describes Maggie as a pathetic pooch. Walker also draws images from the animal kingdom to depict the characters in a unique way. When making her character comparisons, the narrator chooses animals—sheep, lizards, mules—that are a bit more exotic than your average dog or fish (like she uses to describe Maggie). This helps to show how these characters' appearances are a little out of the ordinary, which is, of course, exactly the look they're going for as they work to emphasize their African and Arabic
