Metamorphosis Essay Often times, when someone is down, their family will bring them up. In Gregor Samsa’s case his family wants nothing to do with him. In “Metamorphosis”, by Franz Kafka, Gregor goes through a change with his body and himself. Gregor changes from a human to a giant beetle. This causes Gregor to feel very alone and doesn’t know what to do. He stays in his room because if he leaves no one will accept him. Before he was a beetle, he would help his family, he worked for them to help with living costs. His family doesn't appreciate his help or him for that matter. This leads to Gregor feeling rejected or alienated from his family, society and himself. One of the first ways that shows Gregor is being alienated is by the way his family treats him. His family does not show much love or appreciation towards him, even before he morphed into a giant beetle. An example of this is when he misses work, his boss comes to make sure he is alright. When Gregor gets his bedroom door open, his boss, the Chief Clerk, backs away and runs out the door. In the book it says “...the chief clerk had already backed away” (Kafka 1120). Being that the Chief Clerk was not in his family or household, shows how someone from society does not accept him being a beetle. Another way is when the charwomen calls Gregor disgusting and gross. He begins to feel worthless and lonely. The charwomen was only a maid to Gregor but, she is an example to how society would treat Gregor if he left his home. Lastly, Gregor never had a love interest. He was always alone and had no one to care for him. Maybe if he had a wife or someone closer to him than his family was, maybe he would be alive and well cared for.
