Families can be referred to as complex units linked by strong emotional bonding. The way the family members interact and the way the whole family group relate is known as family dynamics. The dynamics among the family members are influenced by the family’s traditions, emotional interdependence, communication style and behavioral patterns. The video La Famiglia talks about the emigration of Italian’s to America during the 1800 and 1900’s. It talks about the poverty that Italians had in their homeland, near Naples. I believe that this is the most influential and important factor as to why they decided to find better opportunity in America when it comes to income and security. What they encountered, as the state in the video was a lot of hardship and tribulations. Many of times the male would leave the house and look for work in America only to never return. Working in hard labor jobs like mining, Italians would be forced to work long hours for horrific pay and also time spent away from their families. We are close to the brave new world in personal relationships, especially with the family unit. There is no family unit in the brave new world, you are on your own. To even think about having a mother and father is a horrible thing. We are slowly falling into the ways of the Brave New World. If we don’t start changing our ways then we are not going to have a sense of the family unit.

The film, Precious, is a powerfully charged story that delves into the family dynamics of a 16-year-old girl and her struggles to survive an onslaught of treacherous experiences. Throughout the film, the viewer is enveloped in a dramatic web of extreme situations, experienced by the main character, and those to whom she is close. The themes of domestic violence, rape, incest, drug addiction, gambling, poverty, social justice, social services, housing and education are laced together throughout the story. Particularly poignant attention is paid to various systems that help shape the experiences of the characters. The social services industry, and its associated workers, educators and administrators, set the foundation for the social themes that are highlighted by this film.

In 1971, New York Times columnist Fred Ferretti wrote an article about a new television series called All in the Family. Ferretti asked, whether or not if racism and bigotry were considered funny and he concluded that it was not and as a result believed that the show was lacking good taste. Apparently, the television viewers of America disagreed. Running from 1971 to 1979, All In The Family wasn’t the first television series to tackle major issues on a major network, but what was innovative about the series, was that is that it hewed its situational comedy from topical issues, and it explored them through characters we got to know and cared about every week. Simply put, All in the Family wasn’t just a great situational comedy; it as was an ongoing national conversation rooted in well-written, well-acted and multifaceted characters.

While reading The Family Crucible, the authors made it feel like I was watching a life-time television series. There were several high points and low points during the family therapy session that left me unsure of how the show would end. This book takes you on a journey using family counseling to help a family heal and communicate better with one another. I thought it was interesting how this systematic therapy took place in a time where therapy was looked at as taboo. Many times in that era family therapy was not an option. The main focus was on the family member with the issue and not on the parents or other family members. In the book the authors used different theories and approaches during the counseling sessions which were quite interesting. This process after time enabled the family to look at the journey they were on in order to understand how the family, as a whole, should function.

In terms of a system, the meaning is a consistent arrangement of things connected to form unity or to operate as a whole. These systems are dated back in origins to the 1950’s and 1960’s. In this theory we must understand an individual’s family and how it works for that family daily in the community, neighborhood, social aspect, and etcetera. When one part of the system changes, the whole system changes. When everything is balanced it is said to be in equilibrium or homeostasis which seemingly is a good thing (Poorman, 2003). Family boundary ambiguity can be defined as confusion about who is in and who is out of the family system, because of the physical or psychological absence of one or more of the members (Boss & Greenburg, 1984). Boundary ambiguity has been studied in families in which the gain or loss of a family member is vague such as missing-in-action families (e.g., Boss 1977, 1980), divorced families (e.g., Peterson & Christensen, 2002; Rosenburg & Guttman, 2001), remarried families (e.g., Hobart, 1988; Stewart, 2005), and family caregivers to Alzheimer’s patients (e.g., Kaplan & Boss, 1999; Sherman & Boss, 2007). Few studies have examined boundary ambiguity in foster families, despite the frequent addition and loss of members within the household.

According to Richard Charles (2001) “the effectiveness of family systems theory rests not much on empirical research but on clinical reports of positive treatment outcomes, the personal benefits experienced by the families that underwent this kind of treatment, and the elegance of Bowen’s theory” (p. 279). Bowen’s family systems theory views the family as an emotional unit and is a theory of human behavior. Systems thinking are used to describe the complex interactions in the unit. However, the client’s ability to differentiate himself/herself from the family of origin is the basis for Bowen’s family systems theory. Data analysis from this one interview revealed the following about Mexican American Families. The decision to immigrate to the U.S. involves several push and pull factors that influence people to make this choice. In the case of Jane Doe she felt that it was necessary because “tienes que salir adelante” (Interview, 2015), which translates to you have to get ahead. She talked about how the U.S. offered great promises of work and a better life for her and her two children. Reoccurring themes through out the interview is the reliance on family and friends, personal space, emotional support, and tradition.

The Family Crucible is a story about the Brice family who is recommended by Claudia’s psychiatrist to go to family therapy due to the fact that she has not been making any progress in individual psychotherapy. The Brice family comes in to meet with Dr. Carl Whitaker and Dr. Augustus Napier, who co-facilitate family therapy throughout the entirety of the book.

Imagine being mocked for who you are and singled out on the way you act and dress—heterosexuals face that problem everyday seeing it broadcasted on shows and movies commonly seen in the genre of drama and comedy. Stereotypes on groups of people affect whether they are true or just a perception. The gay community is discriminated against and has to overcome stereotypes in the media, as seen in Modern Family, Glee, and Mean Girls showing how they are struggling to be represented accurately and positively. Before the 1960’s gay men weren’t shown in films, plays, shows, etc.

Lastly we get to see Mitchell and Cam in an airplane on the way home with their newly adopted daughter. An old lady says, “She’s an angel. You and you're wife must be thrilled!” The stereotype has come and gone that only opposite sex couples adopt/have children. “Modern Family” has it all; gays, straights, whites, Latinos, old, young, but mostly they are all beautiful in their own

After a thorough review of the textbook and the course material, the specific family system approach that I choose to explore is the Bowenian Approach for this literature review. This specific family system approach is also known as the Bowen Family System Theory as well (D.V. Papero, 2006). The Bowen Family System Theory was established by Murray Bowen, a theorist and psychiatrist who specialized in treating children who were deranged and had schizophrenia (Rockwell, 2010). In the 1950s, Bowen wanted to explore a new venture so he decided that he wanted all of the family members of each child to be involved in an therapeutic process at the same time (Rockwell, 2010).

Today society displays greater diversity within households. Most American households are now non-traditional or unconventional. Non-traditional or unconventional families include; single parenthood, singlehood and LGBT relationships. Modern family is a comedy exploring the different “modern” families. This show explores a huge unconventional family through a gay couple, made up of Mitchell and Cameron, and their adopted daughter Lily; a straight couple comprised of Phil and Clare, and their three children, Luke, Alex and Hayley; and a multicultural family which is comprised of Jay and his much younger wife Gloria and their son Manny. Modern family explores how the present day family is defined and , modern America means for family members. Despite Modern family’s groundbreaking success in representing non traditional families, the show continues to reinforce heteronormative values through stereotypes of queer identity in regards, gender roles within the relationship, gay adoptive parents and gay marriage.
