All Quiet On The Western Front Rhetorical Analysis

During both of the World Wars, the United States was short on money and supplies for the soldiers overseas, so they made posters to gain support from the people still at home. The posters showcased government bonds that Americans could buy that were essentially loans to the United States government. In order to get people to spend the small amounts of money they had, the posters used emotions and tone to persuade the American citizens to buy the bonds. The term used for the emotional looking pictures to showcase the author’s message is pathos. Many of the posters used during the wars used pathos to get their message across.

Leper, while recounting the events that lead up to Phineas’s fall from the tree, describes the whole ordeal with striking imagery. The reader can clearly visualize exactly what he saw -- how sunbeams graced Gene and Phineas’s dark silhouettes as they stood on the limb, and the black, solid mass that was the tree itself. Enhanced with similes such as “black as death” and “like golden machine-gun fire”, the whole passage really comes to life.

All Quiet on the Western Front is a story about the horrors of World War I from the perspective of a German soldier named Paul. Throughout Paul’s service he sees and does horrible things, becoming disillusioned with the ideals of the German high command and of world leaders in general. This book makes it clear not only that the generation of boys and men that were sent out to fight feel betrayed by the previous generation and by their government, but also that there was a huge gap between the soldiers and everyone else around them.

Prior to ending the horse’s misery, the soldiers see the last one “[prop] itself on its forelegs and [drag] itself round in a circle like a merry-go-round” (Remarque 64). In the incredible book, All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque, the reader follows Paul Baumer, a young man who enlisted in the war. The reader goes on a journey and watches Paul and his comrades face the sheer brutality of war. In this novel, the author tries to convey the fact that war should not be glorified. Through bombardment, gunfire, and the gruesome images painted by the author, one can really understand what it would have been like to serve on the front lines in the Great War. The sheer brutality of the war can be portrayed through literary devices such as personification, similes, and metaphors.

Esperanza is forever marked by the house and neighborhood she lives in. She wants to be like other kids who are allowed to eat their lunch at school instead of having to go home everyday. These students live father from the school than she does. Esperanza assumes these children live in better houses and neighborhoods. The point of this speech was to persuade Congress into declaring war on the Axis Powers. This speech went on to fuel a nation into four years of war. As you know, the US joined the Allied Powers in WWII. This is because FDR was able to effectively use Pathos and Ethos to convince Congress to join WWII.

Both Paths of Glory and All Quiet on the Western Front depict “The Great War”, also known as “First World War” or “World War I.” The Great War originated in Europe, it was a Global War that lasted from July 28 1914 up until November 11 1918. involved all the world’s economic great powers, which had all assembled into two opposing alliances. The Allies, which were based on the Triple Entente of the British Empire, France, and the Russian Empire, and the Central Powers which were composed of Germany, and Austria- Hungary. These alliances reorganized and expanded as more nations entered the war. Italy, Japan, and the United States joined the Allies, while the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria joined the Central powers. Both sides of this war were fighting from the trenches, hardly making any progress at all unless one side became brave enough to venture forward and out of the trenches in attempt attack the enemy. The movie Paths of Glory, and All Quiet on the Western Front are both realistic representations of the life for soldiers during this war. However, these two movies differ slightly in the way that the story of “The Great War” is told.
