Appetizer All Quiet On The Western Front Imagery: The author uses imagery to describe the Russian prisoners’ lives in the camps. This imagery makes them look pathetic and frail, causing the reader to feel empathetic and sorry for them. Also we see the same idea of imagery within the hospitals and what happens in them. The description of gore and fear emphasizes the theme of death The House On Mango Street “Where do you live? she asked There, I said pointing up to the third floor You live there? There… I lived there.” Repetition: In the first chapter of the book, we see that Esperanza recalls the time when a nun inquired where she lives. We notice that she points to the house, the
During both of the World Wars, the United States was short on money and supplies for the soldiers overseas, so they made posters to gain support from the people still at home. The posters showcased government bonds that Americans could buy that were essentially loans to the United States government. In order to get people to spend the small amounts of money they had, the posters used emotions and tone to persuade the American citizens to buy the bonds. The term used for the emotional looking pictures to showcase the author’s message is pathos. Many of the posters used during the wars used pathos to get their message across.
Leper, while recounting the events that lead up to Phineas’s fall from the tree, describes the whole ordeal with striking imagery. The reader can clearly visualize exactly what he saw -- how sunbeams graced Gene and Phineas’s dark silhouettes as they stood on the limb, and the black, solid mass that was the tree itself. Enhanced with similes such as “black as death” and “like golden machine-gun fire”, the whole passage really comes to life.
All Quiet on the Western Front is a story about the horrors of World War I from the perspective of a German soldier named Paul. Throughout Paul’s service he sees and does horrible things, becoming disillusioned with the ideals of the German high command and of world leaders in general. This book makes it clear not only that the generation of boys and men that were sent out to fight feel betrayed by the previous generation and by their government, but also that there was a huge gap between the soldiers and everyone else around them.
Society often masks the true horrors of war in order to promote patriotism. In All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque captures the reality of war through the horrific imagery, which he portrays through similes. The narrator, nineteen-year-old Paul Bäumer, and his comrades look over the trenches to witness horse suffering in no man’s land. Prior to ending the horse’s misery, the soldiers see the last one “[prop] itself on its forelegs and [drag] itself round in a circle like a merry-go-round” (Remarque 64). Remarque compares the dying horse to a merry-go-round to create situational irony through imagery. Associated with happiness and nostalgia, merry-go-rounds portray purity as they are ironically compared to a tortured
In the incredible book, All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque, the reader follows Paul Baumer, a young man who enlisted in the war. The reader goes on a journey and watches Paul and his comrades face the sheer brutality of war. In this novel, the author tries to convey the fact that war should not be glorified. Through bombardment, gunfire, and the gruesome images painted by the author, one can really understand what it would have been like to serve on the front lines in the Great War. The sheer brutality of the war can be portrayed through literary devices such as personification, similes, and metaphors.
In What It Is Like To Go To War, Karl Marlantes writes about a multitude of issues that war veterans have to deal with after coming back from war and uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos logos and pathos to try and build common ground with the audience. The opening pages to “Loyalty” are not written in the viewpoint of Marlantes being in the Vietnam War, providing where and what Marlantes was loyal to and how he viewed loyalty as, this is ineffective method t build common ground with me because I have never experienced any violent scenario let alone war; Marlantes heartache after leaving Meg behind to show how painful it was for both of these young lovers shows a strong use of pathos because everyone can relate to heartache, romantic or not, to the other rhetorical
In Black Hawk's Surrender Speech in 1832, Black Hawk portrays many forms of being a courageous Indian who faced many obstacles, but was always true to his nation. He portrays this by utilizing rhetorical devices and associating to the reader through pathos.
Esperanza is forever marked by the house and neighborhood she lives in. She wants to be like other kids who are allowed to eat their lunch at school instead of having to go home everyday. These students live father from the school than she does. Esperanza assumes these children live in better houses and neighborhoods. She is embarrassed by her house and angry that she must be identified by it. As said by Sister Superior, “I bet I can see your house from my window. Which one? Come here. Which one is your house?” The sister points to an ugly row of houses in the general direction of Esperanzas address.
“A date that shall live in infamy” (Line 2). This is a quote that many Americans have heard before. This infamous quote comes from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), in his Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation. FDR gave this speech in response to the Pearl Harbor Attack on December 7th, 1941. The point of this speech was to persuade Congress into declaring war on the Axis Powers. This speech went on to fuel a nation into four years of war. As you know, the US joined the Allied Powers in WWII. This is because FDR was able to effectively use Pathos and Ethos to convince Congress to join WWII.
Stanley Kubrick directed the movie, Paths of Glory. All Quiet on the Western Front is both a novel, and a movie. The novel is written by Erich Maria Remarque, and the movie was directed by Lewis Milestone. Both Paths of Glory and All Quiet on the Western Front depict “The Great War”, also known as “First World War” or “World War I.” The Great War originated in Europe, it was a Global War that lasted from July 28 1914 up until November 11 1918. involved all the world’s economic great powers, which had all assembled into two opposing alliances. The Allies, which were based on the Triple Entente of the British Empire, France, and the Russian Empire, and the Central Powers which were composed of Germany, and Austria- Hungary. These alliances reorganized and expanded as more nations entered the war. Italy, Japan, and the United States joined the Allies, while the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria joined the Central powers. Both sides of this war were fighting from the trenches, hardly making any progress at all unless one side became brave enough to venture forward and out of the trenches in attempt attack the enemy. The movie Paths of Glory, and All Quiet on the Western Front are both realistic representations of the life for soldiers during this war. However, these two movies differ slightly in the way that the story of “The Great War” is told.

e majority of the marriages in Afghanistan are still being forced till this day which sorrowful in my opinion. I don't think honor killings should occur in any country. I can’t believe the victim that is raped has to go to jail for something that she doesn't control. I found that very unfair and horrible to imagine. Afghanistan, in general, doesn't view women as actual women because it shows that they can take advantage of any female and the victim will get punished for it. It breaks my heart knowing that women are being treated so bad especially I was raised by women, so I tend to have a lot of emotions when it comes to women's rights which are being violated on a vast scale throughout the book. However, Azita came across and was one of the few women who was very brave of her because, In Afghanistan, a culture ruled almost entirely by men, so it's difficult for women to have a voice for
Twelve-year-old Kaz who lives in Afghanistan comes from an extremely poor family. Desperate and hungry, he joins the Taliban which promises him three meals a day. Soon after joining, Kaz’s commander ordered him to fire on a group women and children. Kaz protests the order, but is told he will face the same fate if he resists. Kaz takes part in the killing and is later prosecuted for war crimes.
Rhetorical questions are often proposed to help get the audience to question themselves. An example of a rhetorical question is what do you consider to be the value of life? Many people will say life is greater than anything else on Earth, but then why do people go around smashing bugs or destroying trees or getting abortions? “Scholars would talk about symbolism in writing, but no one had asked the writers.” At any state, many other people are forced to consider that their view on the subject is. Stephen Crane most definitely plays with rhetorical questions and the symbols that follow those questions, especially in The Red Badge of Courage and An Episode of War.
I feel like the author wants us to experience it visually in our mind to show how cruel and disrespectful he was to the prisoners. He wants to show us that because the way the Officers didnt care about the prisoners health or there wellness. He also wants us to understand That at any condition keep your faith high when you feel really low. He also wants us to feel like we are in the Holocaust, watching people get hung or watching people get chose for the crematorium. He wants us to feel mentally and physically attached. Finally, He wants us to understand that people will do anything to survive like when the son jumped his father to get one peice of bread all to
