All Summer Day Short Story

Decent Essays

“All Summer Day” by Ray Bradbury is a short story about Margot, a little girl that is depressed and bullied by classmates. Margot recently came to Venus from Earth, she misses seeing the sun because Venus rains all day and night and the sun only comes out every 7 years. This makes her depressed, but to make it worse the other kids bully her because they are jealous that she saw the sun more recently than them. One lesson the story suggests is that depression can cause you to not enjoy life and be lonely. One thing that Margot never did in the story was play with other children because she was so depressed about the sun’s absence. In the story, Bradbury illustrates this concept by saying, “ If they tagged her and ran, she stood blinking after them and did not follow.” In this sentence, you notice that she just stayed to herself and never played with the other children. You can also see this in the part of the story where Bradbury writes, “Only when they sang about the sun and the summer did her lips move as she watched the drenched window.” This sentence shows how she was depressed about the sun more than the other sentence, but still has the same concept about how she did not play with the other children. It also shows that she kept to herself and only opened her mouth when she thought the subject was worth singing or talking about. It’s really sad to think she didn't even try to make friends with any of the kids, but I also don’t believe the children would have accepted
