All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is a novel filled with despair, death, aspirations, fear, and fearlessness. It revolves around WWII, in Nazi Germany, the concentration young camps for boy soldiers, and two teenagers who struggle throughout their period of life as well as the people around them. The main lynchpins of this book are Marie-Laure, and Werner, they go in and out of trials and tribulations as well as happiness. Terror is one of the most important things to a human because they are fearful. The citizens of Nazi Germany were in a constant state of unknowing, that’s the affect the War had, the fear of not knowing if their young boy is going to get sent to a concentration camp with Hitler. The citizens of Nazi Germany has been petrified when Hitler made his grand appearance, then the citizens warmed up to him.

Being blind manifest itself in a lot of ways. The most harmful type of this condition may be figurative blindness of one’s own situations and ignorance towards the feelings of others. Within Raymond Carver’s short story “Cathedral,” the narrator’s emotional and psychological blindness is at once obvious. The narrator faces many issues as well as the turn-around experienced at the culmination of the tale are the main ideas for the theme of this story; and these ideas aid the narrator in eventually develop the character transformation by simply regarding the literal blind man in a positive light.

During this time period, Harlem was flourishing with aspiring artists, writers and musicians. People in Harlem were free to create, explore and expand their ways of thinking. However, this freedom was followed by delinquency, crime and drug use.

Novels and texts about war, or more specifically the World Wars, are often written in a glamorized manner, and are told in the perspective of the victors. Consequently, seldom are readers allowed a glance at the losing side’s perspective. I chose All the Light We Cannot See because I’m really interested in reading,or learning,anything about World War II, so it was a perfect pick for me since the book was based around the World War II time period. I must admit, the book was extremely long and I did have a hard time forcing myself to pick up the book and continue reading it. It felt like it would never end. Fortunately, the author’s writing style was really descriptive and you can easily see whatever the character saw, or heard whatever the characters heard. The fact that I could easily see the cities Anthony Doerr described,or hear the oceans he made the characters hear, really helped me continue reading the book until I finished it.

People who are blind face many different problems in accomplishing everyday activities and becoming an independent individual. Some are able to overcome this issue while others struggle through it in their lives. In “Helen Keller’s Address before the New York Association for the Blind, January 15, 1907” she makes an appeal to the audience that the blind should be helped and made independent so that they can stand up and support themselves. She uses pathos or emotionally packed words, examples and anecdotes and cites from a prominent source to convince her audience that the blind are not helpless, but they are in need of guidance from people who can see in order to live and thrive independently.

He helped her develop skills to manage her condition in various ways such as making her wooden models of their neighborhood to be able to navigate the streets, and teaching her braille. Marie-Laure was very dependent on her father and his assistance, and when they moved to Saint-Malo where he was arrested and taken to a German prison, Marie-Laure was left hopeless and devastated. She began helping her great uncle, who she lived with, and his housekeeper, Madame Manec, with the French resistance group they were organizing.

The story “Cathedral” demonstrates that lack of sight does not necessarily prevent one from perceiving things as they are, or live their life to the fullest. In the story, a middle-age blind man, who is a friend to the narrator’s wife, and used to be her boss at one point, visits the narrator and his wife. The narrator has never interacted with blind people before, and all he knew about blind people was what he had seen on television. Blind people are stereotypically portrayed on television as slow moving, dull people, who never laugh. Based on this perception, the narrator was reluctant to meet the blind man and doubted whether they were going to connect. This is evident when the narrator states, “I wasn’t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me” (Carver 1).
