Alopecia Areata is a common autoimmune skin disease that attacks the hair follicles and causes hair loss in places like the scalp, face, and sometimes other places on the body. Alopecia is very common because it affects about 6.8 million people in the United States alone and can affect people of all ages, genders, and ethnic groups.
One type of alopecia is the non-scarring type. The non-scarring type of alopecia is believed to be caused by an abnormality in the immune system. The abnormality leads to a misguided immune system that tends to attack its own body. In the case of alopecia, the immune system attacks the hair follicles which interrupts hair growth. Alopecia is also sometimes associated with other autoimmune conditions like thyroid disease, vitiligo, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. Alopecia is not contagious.

Scarring alopecia is caused by chronic inflammation, chemical trauma, or chronic tension from things like braids that destroys the hair follicles. This type of alopecia is usually permanent and the hair will not grow back.
If you have been affected by alopecia your scalp may be more sensitive to certain elements such as the sun, cold, or other harsh conditions. It may be beneficial for you to wear something that covers the affected areas protect them from further damage like a hat or scarf. You may also want to apply sunscreen to your scalp if you live in areas that have a lot of sun or wearing sun glasses if your eyelashes have fallen out.
