Alse Young Alse Young of Windsor, Connecticut, was accused and hung for being a witch in the thirteen colonies. Very little is known of Alse Young; Her existence is only known for being a witch. She is believed to be married to John Young. Alse had a daughter named Alice Young Beamon. There is only that she was a women and was hung at the Meeting Square House in Hartford, Connecticut, on what is now known as the site of the Old State House. On May 26th, 1647, Alse young was hanged. Alse Young's hanging Impacted society in a very big way. She was the first person to ever be accused and hung for being a witch, after that many more people started going on witch hunts and accusing their neighbors. Most people were afraid of witches, and hoped
The Salem witch trials had a drastic affect on the Puritan religion. The trials helped shape and point the direction for the New England Colonies and the Puritan religion. The Salem witch trials outbreak began in 1692. In the past, there had only been about five convictions of people being accused of witchcraft; none of this resulted in any deaths(Wilborn 16). Usually just a fine was given, but by the end of 1692 there was already 150 arrests (17). Whether you were rich or poor, it didn’t seem to matter, anyone and everyone was being accused. No one felt safe at this time (Trask ix).
Understanding a person’s life and struggles helps explain his or her character and leadership qualities. Smallwood E. Williams was born on October 17, 1907 in Virginia. He moved to Columbus, Ohio with his mother and stepfather when he was only eleven years old. Williams lost his father when he was an infant (Taylor 50). Upon moving to Columbus in 1918, his mother joined Bishop Robert Lawson’s Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith (COOLJC) and began taking Williams there every Sunday. A few years later, at age fourteen, Williams started preaching at the church while attending school. In fact, people started calling him “Boy-Wonder Preacher” mainly after his travel to New York City to preach at Lawson’s Refuge Church of Christ
A lasting effect caused by the Trials was the splitting apart of families. The trials completely destroyed family relationships because women were murdered who were wives and mothers. Even after the trials, the people who were accused were still facing extreme conditions. If the member of the family survived, they were compensated as an apology but if the person was killed for being a witch, their family received nothing. No aid, no nothing. Even those who were prosecuted but not executed, they were still prosecuted.
The Young Lords began as a Puerto Rican turf gang in the Lincoln Park, Chicago neighborhood of Lincoln Park in the fall of 1960 and as a civil and human rights movement on Grito de Lares. The Young Lords' supported independence for Puerto Rico, and all Latino nations and oppressed nations of the world and also neighborhood empowerment. This was shown by their emblem of the map of Puerto Rico and a brown fist holding up a rifle and the purple lettering reading, "Tengo Puerto Rico en mi Corazon" ("I have Puerto Rico in my heart"). Puerto Rican and Latino self-determination, and increasing repression of the group is what caused them to form the Young Lords. In order to increase property tax revenues, they were evicted from areas near the Loop, lakefront, Old Town, Lakeview and Lincoln Park, which were all Puerto Ricans and several Mexican communities at that time.
Nineteen were hung, one was pressed and tortured to death, hundreds were imprisoned, and five had died while waiting to be trialed in prison. They were just a victim of being someone’s personal vendetta. The witch trials were revolved around a group of women that were said to of witnessed witchcraft. These young women were thirsting after their enemies to get the type of justice they thought to believe was reasonable for things certain people had done in the past that enraged them. Witch hunts like these root back far, all the way back to New England. During the 17th century europe was swarmed with accusations of
This led to the start of the Salem Witch Trials and the hanging of 19 people. People were getting more afraid and because at first everyone was scared of witches. But people were scared that they would be blamed for being a witch and get hanged. This shows how people were afraid during this time. That also that they were starting to get paranoid. Also, that the more afraid they got the longer it would go on because no one would speak up and say anything. Moving on, the Red Scare was also
20 people were hanged for being accused for being a witch, in the period of three months. The people involved were the men and women in Salem ,but the women played a big role in the salem witch trial. Women were being accused of being a witch mainly women and the people accusing these women were mostly young girls. Over 20 people were hanged for being accused of being a witch but also for defending them. My opinion for what caused the Salem Witch Trial hysteria was that Jealous poor women accused rich old women of being witches to get their husbands.
Salem Witch Trials: In Salem Massachusetts, there were a series of trials and executions, leading to the death of innocent people, who were mainly women accused of witchcraft. Twenty people were sentenced to death based on mere accusations. Some of these victims were placed in the position of a scapegoat for problems these people did not understand at that time. The other portions of victims were people that their communities considered as outcast. When the trials had ended peoples outlooks on what had taken place changed. Too bad they didn’t change sooner; otherwise a lot of lives could have been saved.

From June till September 1692 nineteen men and women died for being accused of being a witch or wizard. All these people were hanged on gallows hill except one old man who was eighty years old who was pressed to death because he refused to be on trial. He was pressed to death because they couldn't hang him since he was never put on trial.Over the next few months more than a 150 men women and children were accused
At Brewton-Parker College, the campuses community is quite small. I cannot decide if it is a good thing that everyone knows each other. Because the school’s population is not quite as high as a big university, everyone knows everyone’s business. No matter what someone does, good or bad, it gets out, but for me the size in beneficial. The less people there are, the less chance I have of getting distracted. I love how small the classes are, too, because my teachers actually knows who I am. Also, when I need help with what we’re learning or I just have a simple question, I can easily ask my teacher, and he or she can help me better understand what is going on. The teachers here, at Brewton-Parker College, are kind and beyond willing to help me, no matter how long it takes; help is always there when I need it. For instance, the library has become my best friend. I like how I can go and have my own table to get a good amount of work done, and the books are such a useful resource for
One of the accused was an old beggar woman named Sarah Good, another was an adulterous woman named Sarah Osbourne and the third was an Indian slave named Titube. However, the accusations did not stop there. Over one-hundred and fifty people were arrested and put on trial for practicing witchcraft. The trials were extremely unfair. Since most of the accused refused to confess, the court relied on spectral evidence. Spectral evidence consisted of Satan or some other supernatural being appearing in the form of an accused witch. It was impossible for one of the accused to be found not guilty (Bailey,1). The first to be hanged was Bridget Bishop. In the month to follow eighteen others were hanged and Giles Cory was pressed to death when he refused to plead guilty. In 1692twenty innocent people were executed in and around Salem. What started as a few adolescent girls writhing and convulsing soon metalized into dozens of victims, hundreds accused, and committees torn
In the time this was taking place, many people, especially the lower class women, were on edge. They were afraid they were going to be accused of preforming witchcraft because then they’d have to go on trial. If a woman went on trial not only would this destroy their reputation but if they were found guilty then they would have to be held in jail until they were hung. This affected more than just the accusers and the accused but it also affected their families. They too would hold a bad reputation of possibly being witches too and they would be weighed down with grief. After their family member has just been accused of being a witch then hung they would be left emotionally damaged. Afterwards when they stopped believing the girls when they would accuse someone and let everyone go, they were left with both debt and very little to do. With their reputation, nobody would have wanted to have anything to do with them. This also left a major impact on American history in many ways. During the Salem Witch Trials many families were split apart from each other when one of them was accused or if they had different opinions on the situation. It happened to families that were both apart of the accusers and the accused. It also changed the way people are now seen in court. Back then, they didn’t have a lawyer to defend them but now we can have one to help us. They didn’t have a fair trial because the
Adam Lind Leslie played a small but important part in the gold mining industry in NSW, during the 19th century. Without his efforts to comfort the miners, Australia’s gold industry would never of been so successful.
