“Ambiguity is a quality that allows something to be interpreted in several - sometimes even conflicting - ways” (Holt 297). The mysterious features of ambiguity in literature results in the reader continually thinking about the possibilities of the story’s ending, even after finished reading. In Frank R. Stockton’s short story, “The Lady and the Tiger?”, despite ambiguity, the princess’s choice is clear. Because of the hostile opinion the princess holds towards the thought of the lady, the princess obviously chooses the door that leads to the tiger. Many people mistakenly think she selects the lady’s door because the text says, “she loved him with an ardor that had enough barbarism in it to make it exceedingly warm and strong” (301). What these people fail to realize is that the princess is described as semi-barbaric, meaning she has a wild and untamed personality. On the other hand, her choice of the tiger is clear because the princess had seen, “or imagined that she had seen, this fair creature throwing glances of admiration upon the person of her lover, and sometimes she thought these glances were perceived and even returned” (302). The princess’s immense jealousy and fear of her sweetheart leaving her possesses her to see her lover cheating. This is due to the princess’s nature which does not allow her to think of a less extreme scenario. The princess admits, “how much oftener had she seen him at the other door! How in her grievous reveries had she gnashed her teeth, and torn her hair, when she saw his start of rapturous delight as he opened the door of the lady! How her soul had burned in agony when she had seen him rush to meet that woman, with her flushing cheek and sparkling eye of triumph” (303).
