I was very excited, but I was also very nervous. When she finally agreed to sign me up, i was was bursting with excitement. Salvador Dali once said, “Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.”, meaning that without ambition the world would never progress. Ambition is “a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work”(Google Dictionary). Ambition is what has made the world what it is today, whether that be a good thing or bad. People all around the world have ambitions, hopes, and dreams for the future; to give their family a better life in a new country, to get a promotion, to get straight A’s. Ambition gave women and people of color a right to vote, and same sex marriage. While ambition is intr to change, it's not always a good thing. It can cause the conceding of others and their own core values. Many characters in the novel Mississippi Trial, 1955 by Christopher E. Crowe are ambitious, but in the end, only a few characters ambition results in good. Throughout the novel the ambitions of Earl, Harlan, and Hiram all intertwine
The theme of ambition is portrayed in three vast different ways between these text. They have many things in common, yet also have many things that differ between one another. In Shakespeare’s play, “Macbeth”, he uses ambition and loyalty hand-in-hand to provide a sense of relatability, while in “Ambition” by Edgar Albert Guest, he uses drive and motivation to portray his view of ambition. What holds the power to smite any foe, surmount any obstacle, or craft any fear? In a single word, ambition. Ambition is the fuel of the human heart, enabling a drive that keeps the evolution of mankind forward past any conceivable boundaries. The Greedy Dog, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and Pardoner’s Tale all provide direct insight as to why ambition is to be revered, harbored with caution. It is my opinion, that ambition is a positive trait that may result in the manifestation of any feasible goal with appropriate management, whether the deed be evil or righteous.
Ambition is usually a fantastic tool to have and has done amazing things for mankind in the past, but if ambition fogs your conscious it can cause anyone to do terrible things. In Neel Burton’s article, “Is Ambition Good or Bad?” Burton insists that ambitious people achieve for the “sake of the rewards of the achievement,” including that of money, honor, and title. He claims that no person may alter their ambition, much like any other characteristic a person may own. He supports his claim by first mentioning Ethics (1677), “everyone endeavors as much as possible to make others love what he loves, and to hate what he hates,” because he who has achieved one persons following, will soon achieve another “for which to keep on striving,” (4). Then, Burton states that ambition is classified to three different forms: healthy ambition, unhealthy ambition, and lack of ambition.
This past summer, I had the opportunity to serve as intern at a summer camp for blind children. Knowing that, despite their disadvantages, there was no excuse for a lack of effort, I witnessed them perform tasks that I had previously believed to be impossible without sight. Cooking, for example, was done with ease, so long as the children had confidence in themselves and their abilities. Through observation, the themes of effort and ambition became abundantly apparent. Similarly, my athletic career has displayed these themes. My introduction to sports began at age three with soccer. Though too young to acknowledge the presence of deeper meanings at the time, soccer had embodied the ideals of effort and ambition within me. These two principles
There is a driving force behind nearly everything we do in our daily lives. From waking up in the morning, getting some work done, to running in the afternoon, there is one force behind it all; it is even what helped land a man on the moon. Ambition is something that motivates every person to succeed and accomplish what they desire. It is what got me to apply to be in this class every year of high school. We, as people, often see ambition as a very positive characteristic that everybody should have but, but Shakespeare thought differently in Julius Caesar.
Sean Hampton once stated, “A dream without ambition is like a car without gas...you’re not going anywhere.” Ambition is the gas for your car and your car is your motivation. It keeps you going through the hardest weather and gives you enough power to go down the road of success. Without your ambition, you don’t have motivation and if you don’t have motivation, then you’re just stuck in the middle of nowhere. Although many people discredit ambition for being a negative quality to obtain, ambition is a major part of a person’s success because it leads a person to achieve positive goals that benefit themselves and others and it influences people to strive for personal growth.
