American Dream Changed Over Time

We all have different opinions of what the American dream consists of. When the economy was stable, most dreams consisted of having a great career, a big house with all the luxuries imaginable. However, having a stable job, and saving for the future is simply what the American dream has become. Some may argue that the American dream is no longer out there because of the income inequality I assure to all those looking for the dream, inequality has always been there and we should not allow anything to stop us from achieving what we want.

Throughout history, Americans have desired to achieve the American dream of wealth, success and fame through education and hard work. However, the industrial revolution of the 19th and 20th centuries began to consume the idea of hard work and rather replace it with the idea of “get rich quick”. With this new idea, the three leading ways to acquire wealth in America are large prize television game shows, compensation lawsuits and state lotteries. That doesn’t sound like the success story that I think of when I hear about the American dream. I think of back to the basics of hard work, dedication to succeed and how people before us earned their living and supported their family. Geography Matters All throughout the world the geography in which a person lives can say deeply impact how a person behaves and it can say many things about the surrounding community. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses the geography of the Valley of Ashes to show how the valley and the people there are the bottom of the barrel for those who strove for the American Dream, despite how hard they worked for a better life. The idea of the American Dream has always been apart of American society since it was rooted in the Declaration of Independence. Over time the ideas behind the dream have changed through the course of history. In today’s society the American Dream has become known as the ability to achieve happiness and wealth through hard work.

As we look at the American Dream in the 1960s, we will compare it to today’s American Dream in the 2000s. In the 1960’s the Dream was for Americans to have peace, liberty and equal opportunity. During this time America was experiencing the Vietnam War and African Americans were fighting for equal rights in the workforce. Many people fought alongside with the famous Dr. Martin Luther King during his fight for equal rights. America has always been known as the land of opportunity. However, the focus today for the American Dream is to land a job that pays a lot of money, buy a house and get rich quick.

In the 1950s the American dream was to own a home, a car, a television, an each time that dream would be lived an achieved there was always a desire for more in life. What went from living based on necessities; went to living by what people wanted and desired. America has went from a society of high family values and face-to-face conversations with other people to a society of social media and the slow but sure destruction of the American family. In our culture today the American dream shows us that, we as Americans will never be content with what we have, this should not be. Americans need to realize that it is not material that makes us happy, or that sustains happiness, but it is acts of kindness, compliments, and recognition that God is with us.

We are Americans. We live and breathe America and we all have an American Dream. The American dream originated from immigrants coming into the United States. These people usually imagined of becoming middle class U.S citizens, getting a job that was better than their dad and their Mother (if she had one). Now the American dream is getting that item that is popular or having the newest car. The American Dream has changed over the course of a couple hundred years.
