The Never Achieved American Dream In early America, the North and South never saw eye to eye on the country's governmental decisions. The breaking point was reached when the North declared the abolishment of slavery and the South threatened to separate from the North after hearing the news about Slavery. Soon after, The Civil War broke out between the North and South. The war lasted for five years. In the end, the North won the war and the slaves were freed marking the beginning of the reconstruction era. In this time period the slaves were freed and gained some rights, but the white southerners tried to keep their rights at a minimum because they wanted to keep their power. During this time period the freed slaves were trying to find their way in their new life. Many big figures suggested ways on how to achieve the “American Dream”, the biggest problem in achieving the American Dream were restrictions made by white southerners to keep African Americans from gaining power. In the reconstruction era the freed slaves had the opportunity to be paid in cash for work, but, the rich white southerners took advantage of the vulnerable African Americans and guided them to poor jobs and away from the American Dream. The 14th amendment gave African Americans the right to life, liberty and property. “Nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law”(Text of the 14th amendment).
