The Declaration of Independence states that all people have the right to pursue happiness. This means that people can live life the way they want to as long as the do not commit crimes or hurt other. The Pursuit of Happiness is supposed to be an inalienable right to all Americans. However, the way I see it, not all people are able to exercise this right. Many people are not able to pursue happiness equally because not all people have the same opportunities. Throughout American history and even today, the Pursuit of happiness is not equal to everyone in the United States. The Pursuit of Happiness and the “American Dream” are supposed to mean that people have equal opportunity to pursue their dreams and goals. However, after viewing the two movies in class, and living in the United States of America my entire life, I know that this is not true. People that are minorities or women have found it very difficult to live the life’s they wanted because of racism and laws in this country that has prevented them. For minorities such as African Americans it took until the 1960s and the civil rights movement to finally gain some ground in getting equal rights. For many women they feel that they are doing the same work as men, but not receiving the same pay or compensation for the same amount of work. It has been show that women do not make the same amount as men for the same work. Also it has been show that many people have not received jobs because of their race or gender. I feel that if someone is doing the same work as another person they should be getting equal pay and someone should not be denied a career opportunity if they are qualified because of their race of gender. Depending on time, place, religion, or race, this definition varies, but essentially comes back to one point: all men, regardless of anything, are created equally, and therefore have a right to be free. Happiness is one of the great themes that makes our lives better. It’s a motivation to commit toward something to keep the feeling active. Whether it’s getting high on substances, making money, or even having enough to get by, Americans desire happiness in one form or another. Walter Mosley, author of, “Be Happy”, expresses his opinion in his article, towards who is responsible for one’s happiness. His confidence lies on believing that it’s an individual's complete obligation to be content with themselves and not anyone else’s. He suggests that the following statement, "the pursuit of happiness is an ‘unalienable right’.”, in the Declaration of Independence, claims that the government is responsible for ensuring most to all Americans’ path to happiness. There are many women that work hard and earn less than males because there women Alot of people think it’s unfair and some think it’s resonable. Woman construction workers only get paid 77 cents for every dollar earned by men it might not seem like a lot off but it adds up over time. Also race depends on how much the people get paid. In 1963 the Equal pay act was passed and it helped a lot of women get paid more but it still wasn’t enough. Women lose alot of money once it adds up they end up losing “nearly $5000,000 in earnings over the course of her career”. Lower earnings make it harder for women and their famililes and it should not be that way they should be able earn equally for what they have worked for.

In the U.S. Declaration of Independence the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental right, but what exactly is happiness? According to Webster 's happiness is defined as a mental or emotional state of well being by positive emotions ranging from contentment to joy. But if we considered happiness as a trait rather than a transient state of being, than happiness wouldn’t be considered “joyful” or even feeling content with life. Instead happiness would perhaps include a sense of hopefulness and serenity and would be looked at as more of a contributor to one’s happiness. Diener explains that happiness does matter in many different ways and uses three decades of research to explain happiness, suggesting that,“There is preliminary evidence that people who score higher on the well-being scales have better social and work relationships; make more money, live longer, healthier lives, and are more contributory societal citizens”(Conkle). In this world you have men and women. 2 different genders who aren't meant to be equal. You hear on the news about how everyone is looking for equality. Either it is a story about racism or about unequal pay for the same job. Have you really read these stories? Have you taking the time and listened to this people? A majority of those people are women trying to live in a man’s world. For many years women stayed home and took care of the children and the house. Now women are in jobs that men use to occupy and also taking care of the home and children. There are many issues along with these careers, such as, having mom guilt, low job count, and the need to work harder than men. Women live many lives in dangerous jobs that include police officer, firefighter, and solider in the military.
