America’s Gift to Generation Z
‘I’d rather be a good person off the field than a good baseball player on the field.’ (Bryce Harper). Bryce Harper would rather help those in need than be a terrific baseball player. Bryce Harper would rather be known for helping those in need than his ability to play baseball. Bryce Harper gave a homeless woman a jar of money. Bryce Harper does help those in need, but wants to help more people. America's gift to Generation Z is baseball players who are role models; Matt Carpenter is caring and Bryce Harper is inspiring. To begin, Matt Carpenter is a caring baseball player. He loves to help those in need. On Twitter, he posted “From now till the rest of the season we will donate 10,000 dollars for every Homerun
I play baseball to keep me in shape, have fun, always learn more, and hopefully one day to play it for a career. I have been playing baseball since I was three years old. I began playing T-ball with a youth sports program known as Upward. Throughout my childhood, I always played up an age group because of my high skill level. When I was about eight years old, I met Brian McCann’s dad.
In the article “The Greatest Generation: The Great Depression and the American South,” Jeffrey DeRoven analyzes the economic struggles of the American South during the Great Depression in order to figure out why some people refer to people from that time period as the “greatest generation.” Below, this paper overviews DeRoven’s thesis, purpose, stance, audience, usage of literary techniques as well as logos, pathos and ethos, logical fallacies, and ultimately concludes with an opinion suggesting that DeRoven’s analysis is mostly sound and useful, but limited in proving his thesis.
Not only are professional baseball players an inspiration; they are also leaders. They have risked life and limb on the field; they inspire us to be better and strive for excellence. For many fans these athletes are
Going…going…gone! As one of America’s greatest pastimes, baseball brings fans from around the world to support their players in competitive games against opposing teams. Known as the “Great American Game,” baseball has transformed history and influenced American culture for many years. Famous professional players, including Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, and countless others have impacted America in matters beyond the baseball field. Robinson, for example, shattered the racial barrier when he became the first African American to play on a professional sports team. Baseball is more than just a game, and it is a lifestyle that has defined my path after high school and molded my character.
Mariano may be retired, but he still works. He helps others get where they need to be. He is done living in the time of his career as a baseball player. Mariano is retired as a baseball player, but a newly self employed charity worker. Mariano Rivera has his own charity now, Mariano Rivera Foundation. The charity was designed to help out with the youth. “The Mariano Rivera Foundation is a community-oriented organization with emphasis in Youth Oriented Programs.” (Mariano Rivera Foundation) This just goes to show how much of a great person Mariano is. It takes one amazing soul to have everything he could ever want, and still want to do more. Rivera also is doing a lot of helping out in Catholic churches. He makes sure that the youth he cares for have everything they need. “These needs would include areas in education, health, social and economic development in the local community.” (Mariano Rivera Foundation) Part of doing this is taking the children to church to develop a religion. Mariano is such an awesome person. Usually, you can dedicate your life to the sport you play, or to helping others. Rivera did both. Mariano is simply a great role
Major League Baseball has customarily shunned the idea of too much focus on individual player limelight. America’s pastime has prided itself on being the penultimate team sport.
Instagram and Twitter are his main social media platforms, both accounts having over 900 thousand followers. Both social media sites contain the same kind of images, which are of the highest quality. Harper uses Instagram well in the aspect of the images he posts. He frequently posts pictures of him playing baseball, as well as snapshots of him and his family. In doing so, he does a great job of promoting the idea that he loves what he does for a living, as well as showing the compassion he has for his family and friends, outside the game of baseball. Despite frequent posts about baseball and family, Harper is able to promote his brand through Instagram too. Every few weeks, Harper includes a post that promotes his line of shoes, cleats, gloves, bats and more. He does a good job of knowing when to post about his gear, and not posting so much that it gets annoying for followers. His use of high quality images only enhance the chance of a follower wanting to look into his gear more, and or buy it. On Twitter, Harper promotes and posts almost identically the same images as his Instagram. The only thing that changes for his Twitter is the little messages he is able to post, without pictures. He often posts bible verses or quotes that affect him on a daily basis. This helps promote his image of a christian man, and reflect his mission of playing
Zack Hample was inspired to be a ballhawk ever since he was a young teenager. (Google) He was always inspired because he loved baseball and loved the people that were involved. (Youtube) He was always down for a bit of a challenge when competing to get baseballs from stadiums. (Biography.org) He would go to stadiums that were near him and get many different baseballs from different players. (Biography.org) Since then, he has been collecting baseballs, giving some out to kids, and keeping a total of the amount he has collected overall so far. (Youtube) He slowly became an expert at it because he kept on saving his money for tickets to games, and he would work his way around the stadiums where he knew certain players we're going to hit it. If you” stay humble and work for what you want you can become anything you want”, which Trout says. He plays for God and his family because they are the ones who gave him the opportunity to play the game he loves. He is only 25 and already one of the best players in the world and only going to get better. He is yet again in the running for another MVP
People tend to have more respect for players like Trout. In interviews back at Trout’s hometown, a lot of kids say he is their role model, and adults say he is a super nice guy (Mike Trout has left big impact on tiny Millville). He puts everything he has into every swing, every play, and every situation and people see how effortless he makes things look because of his talent. However, the one thing that catches people’s eye is how much fun he has while playing baseball. Trout always has a smile on his face and is laughing with teammates even on his bad days because he does not give up. When he is at the plate or a ball comes his way in the outfield, it is always fun to watch. Bryce Harper on the other hand, is viewed differently. Yes, Harper is good, but the way he portrays himself seems as if he is arrogant. Here is an opinion from surveys of anonymous players: “ Bryce Harper, 21 years old, left fielder for the Washington Nationals, is the most overrated player in baseball” (Everyone hates Bryce Harper?...). Instead of playing baseball with heart like Trout, Harper tends to play with his mind. Since he plays with his mind, it is easier for him to lose his cool when things do not go his way. Whenever Harper strikes out, he frequently screams at the umpire for a bad call or slams his equipment in frustration. In those cases, his reactions usually affect the
Specifically the Cubs and the White Sox exemplify some of the better practices in MLB when it comes to community relations. Being in the Chicago puts them in the forefront for a lot of ideas. White Sox Charities is going into it’s 26th season led by Christine O’Reilly is the senior director of community relations and the executive director of Chicago White Sox Charities. One specific area of community relations that she helped the White Sox highlight on is the outreach in the community. This does not just include the immediate Southside of Chicago community but focusing their efforts on reaching out into the suburbs of Chicago to reach more of their fan base. The White Sox created their Volunteer Corps after President Obama’s inauguration in 2008 when he made a call to the American people to improve their communities and serve in them. The White Sox also used the President being a White Sox fan as motivation to the local community and as a call to action to do as Obama had asked the community to do. “Nearly 5,000 Sox fans and community-focused Chicagoans have signed up for the Volunteer Corps since its inception,” According to the 2015 MLB in the Community
When Gehrig speaks of all the influential people he has had the opportunity to work with, it is apparent how grateful and appreciative he is of all the opportunities he has received through baseball. He mentions receiving a gift from the New York Giants and how much that meant to him. I, it makes it obvious that he feels honored and humbled. The that Gehrig speaking of these things is so important to the speech as a whole is to convey that, although his career is coming to a tragic end, he feels as though he has made great accomplishments. By mentioning important figures of baseball it also builds Gehrig’s credibility.
Cal Ripken, Sr. wanted to see children taught life lessons using the game of baseball, and that is exactly what the Cal Ripken, Sr. foundation did. Their mission statement was as follows: “ The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation helps to build character and teach critical life lessons to at-risk young people living in America’s most distressed communities through baseball- and softball-themed programs” (“Mission”). During the 1995 season, Ripken had another encounter with yet another charity. In 1995, when Ripken broke Lou Gehrig’s record for most consecutive games played, Ripken and the Orioles decided to join forces with the Lou Gehrig Fund.
Technology is not all to blame for the stereotypes about Generation Z. Despite the negative comments about Generation Z being lazy and unaware, they are not at all. In fact, because most of them are technologically inclined and virtually updated, they are not apathetic, they’re just being teenagers who were raised in a different environment. This is why there is such a thing as generations in this world. If there weren’t any changes in the world, we wouldn’t even be able to tell if a new generation has come. Every generation has its benefits for a better and more advanced living.
Joe Maddon is a great people person, he is very personable and likes to help others. In the book Sarah Lauch wrote a section about Joe, she is the executive producer of original content at Comcast SportsNet Chicago. She said, “He built the community center to try to bring the different cultures together. That’s how he is as a manager, too. He takes a team of different personalities and different nationalities, and he brings them all together.che knows how to speak Spanish. He knows how to connect players. It was a melding of his baseball career with his real-life hometown” (Wolfe 46). Joe is able to use his experience growing up in his hometown and the lessons that baseball taught him to his job as a manager. Joe Maddon’s uniqueness and his ability to bring a team together is why he is one of the top managers in the MLB
