America's Middle Class America

Good Essays

Today in America, there is a specific class of people who are slowly dwindling away into nonexistence. These people had a dream, the American Dream, they dreamed of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. For some people, this dream was broken down into having a white picket fence with 2.5 kids, a house, and a car. However, today these people are not dreaming they are hoping; hoping to get through another day by making ends meet. These people—which are the core pillar holding up the American Dream—are a part of the middle class Americans. The middle class in America has been on a quick decline in recent years; in order to restore the middle class America will have to reshape our economic structure by lowering the deficit on the middle …show more content…

There are many problems with Social Security today; however, the most prominent problem stands out as the baby boomers. The term baby boomers refer to the massive generation born after World War 2, and since they are all retiring now America’s Social Security is beginning to drain. Chuck Hagel, author for USA Today Magazine, states that in 1950 for each retiree, there were 16.9 people in the workforce; today there are much bigger numbers: for each retiree there are nearly 3.3 people in the workforce (“Saving” 12). Hagel suggests that Americans under 45 should be able to have options when it comes down to how their money is being spent in Social Security: either they can use the traditional Social Security tax rate, or they can use 4% of their Social Security payments to invest the funds that currently make up Federal Thrift Savings Plan (“Saving” 12). Many current politicians such as President Trump have stated that they are going to revive the middle class by bringing jobs back into our economy that have been shipped off overseas. However, the problem with jobs has not been from shipping them overseas. Paul Wiseman, writer for The Associated Press, shows proof of this by stating, “A study at Ball State University’s Center for Business and Economic Research last year found that trade accounted for just 13 percent of America’s lost factory jobs. The vast majority of the lost jobs — 88 percent — were taken by robots and other homegrown factors that reduce factories’ need for human labor” (“Automation” 21). Many companies such as Amazon are prime examples of the automation of factory jobs. Amazon has many factory jobs that require long and hard work in some questionable working conditions. The New York Times reports, “that white-collar workers at Amazon are also subjected to a grueling culture consisting of 24-hour mandated performance, ritual abuse by bosses, and the annual arbitrary culling of employees, referred to as ‘purposeful Darwinism’ in company dialect” (qtd. in Means 21). Amazon did fix the worker problem; but, not by changing job conditions or managers. Instead, they fire the workers and simply replace them with Kiva robots that would do the job complaint free (Means 21).
