1. Amy Tan starts her essay with “I am not a scholar of English or literature” and follows it in the next paragraph with, “I am a writer” to clarify the reason she is writing the text. The difference between the two sentences is to show that she does not believe she is an expert on English or literature; she is simply a woman who writes about both. She uses her own opinions to share with us her knowledge on both topics, but she would not consider herself a “scholar” who would have an array of knowledge full of facts. Tan is simply stating that she is a writer with her own opinions on topics and that the text, Mother Tongue, is simply full of what she has learned and of her own opinions so far in her life on English and literature. Tan’s argument is that the use of English can be interpreted in many ways and also change the way people think of a person. When she includes them it allows for readers to relate to her in different ways and it shows that she has many facts to support her claims with real-life experience. The author uses appeal to Logos and Pathos to build his argument on the subject, and to help persuade the reader to agree with the the argument they are trying to make.
Tan goes on to explain what sociological impacts she experienced based on her upbringing. She concludes that her mother should not be judged based on her “watered down” English, and that people should be more accepting to those who cannot express their feelings in English.
In the case of ethos, the author is a professor at Yale University, which is a status that commands credibility and respect. She presents herself as a Chinese mother (authority figure), who was raised according to this method, which shaped her own parenting style to her two daughters. By learning to recognize logos, ethos, and pathos in advertising, we are able to understand the message and what is being portrayed. (Albert et al, 2014), suggested that Aristotle postulated that a speaker’s ability to effectively convince an audience is constructed on how well the speaker appeals to that audience in three different areas: logos, ethos, and pathos. In “Mother Tongue,” Amy Tan an American writer, shares her experience growing up with the family where no one speaks perfect English, and how it affected her education and her life. As the second generation of Chinese immigrants, Tan faces more problems than her peers do. Her mother, who speaks limited English needs Tan to be her “Translator” to communicate with the native English speakers. Tan states, “I was ashamed of her English” (2). Her mother is like a burden to her, at least in Tan’s early years. But the cultural conflict she becomes the theme of her writing and it is under this situation she wrote many novels and essays including “Mother Tongue.”
In Neil Postman’s novel, Amusing Ourselves to Death, he argues that rationality in America has become dictated by television. Through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, Postman demonstrates that his claim is valid and reliable. This dialect, Tan says, became their "language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk, the language [she] grew up with" (Tan 589). This type of language creates an identity for Tan, one which she was ashamed of growing up. This feeling of shame later backfired as an adult in her fiction writing. She wrote to prove she had "mastery over the English language" with large words, unheard of to the common ear, and sentences she thought were "wittily crafted." But as Tan matured, she realized she should envision an audience for her stories; this audience was her mother. She began to write stories using "all the Englishes" she grew up with. As person living with the gift of dual language, Tan’s essay allowed some insight into my own life. She argued that a person’s limitation on language does not reflect their perspective on society or events of the world. The limitation is more of a token than a deficiency, people having these language issues must come up with an exclusive way to portray thoughts and ideas; therefore, enhancing their perceptual knowledge of the world around. Growing up listening to my mother’s English, I have learned to adapt and am able to fully understand her, even though I constantly catch myself trying to correct her. The way she conveys her thoughts and ideas is what makes her unique and who am I to change her by correcting her idiosyncrasies.
