Amy Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983, and died on July 23, 2011 at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning. Amy was an English singer and songwriter, and was known for mixing the genres of soul, jazz, rhythm and blues. She released two studio albums before passing. Her first album Frank was released in 2003, and her second album Back to Black was released in 2006, winning her 5 Grammy awards a year later. However, Amy’s personal life was a media circus and overshadowed her music career. Amy was an avid user of marijuana, and was addicted to heroin and alcohol. Like many other musicians, her fate was handed to her before her time. But, before passing she was able to make her mark on music today and a little bit of Amy Winehouse still lives on.

It is ironic that so many of our most influential musical talents of their time have seemingly died before their time in tragic circumstances. For instance, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Billie Holliday all lived life in the fast lane and were deeply involved in drugs and alcohol. Ironically, artist Amy Winehouse seemingly predicted her fate when she said, “My greatest fear is probably dying with no one knowing of any contribution I’d ever made to creative music.” What Amy Winehouse did not know at the time, was just how much she did to make a contribution in music. …show more content…

Her father Mitchell Winehouse, was a window salesman, and her mother Janis Winehouse, a chemist. As a Jewish tradition, Amy was given the middle name Jade, from her late step grandfather (Winehouse, 2002). Amy was accustomed to Jazz music from an early age, and loved to hear stories from when her grandmother dated an English jazz legend, Ronnie Scott. (Winehouse, 2002).
