Excuses! Excuses! In the poem “Sick” by Shel Silverstine, the girl tells her mom over exaggerates to her mom that she is sick and that she cannot go to school. After she comes up with excuses, her mom simples correct her and reminders her that it is Saturday. This sounds like the typical child, but it is sad that not everybody grows out of that phase. People come up with excuses, become lazy, then slowly some excuses will become lies. It is hard to break bad habits, but in the end, it can be very beneficial to oneself. I know, because I have become a victim of these habits. Excuses can discourage people from attempting to do and learn new things. Dr. Claudia Aguirre states, “It’s a behavior we express that hurts our own performance …show more content…
Most people call it “A Little White Lie,” but is it really as little as they say it is? A little white lie is like an ant bite, it starts off as a small little bite, but the more you pick and scratch at it the bigger it gets. Just like that little lie. Lies are not the best habit, even though they may help you in a situation, they can also send you flying into an iceberg, sending them farther downwards in their lie, like the titanic being dented up then sunk to the ocean floor. I know I have lied multiple times in my life, especially when I was younger, therefore I have learned from every lie. Why lie when you can bend the truth? Emily Dickerson states in her poem, “Tell all the truth but tell it slant.” Some people might tell the truth but not the whole truth, that is what you would call and half-truth. A half-truth is a statement that conveys only part of the truth, especially one used deliberately in order to deceive someone. Some people may find that the half-truth would be more deceiving then just a lie, because people will find out the whole truth and it is not always a h0000appy ending. Other people find that both of the decisions are very dangerous situations. Even though the truth can hurt, some people want to hear it so that they can learn to overcome and or learn from it. Katherine Schreiber says, “The average American tells one to two lies a day. Those who are insecure or have an
Richard Blanco is a Cuban- American poet who was given the oppurunity to write an inaugaration poem for Barack Obama's second swearing-in. He wrote a poem titled "One Today" that praised the good and unique things about the United States and also the everyday people who's daily routines help to make America the proud country that it is.
There comes a time in every persons life where they feel a burning sensation to lie, but is it worth it? Don’t they feel the shame and the guilt of that lie? On average, people lie between ten to two hundred times a day. But doesn't all of that lying come with a lot of conflict and trouble? The more that you lie the more conflict arises by avoiding truth then if it were to be faced head-on.
A white lie derives from sympathy. It is told to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. We all believe this is better than telling the truth. But is telling a little white lie really the most effective option? Sometimes, we need to hear the truth. Ericsson says, “It is an act of subtle arrogance for any who decides what is best for someone else.” To avoid being honest with someone for the sake of their feelings is selfish. It does more damage than we think. People deserve to know the truth. So they are not misguided to a sense of false hope or confidence. This only leads to people over thinking and second guessing
Angelo Segura English 12 Honors Dr. Jen 5 May 2018 The moment we proclaim we don’t or have never lied is the moment we lie. It doesn’t matter how well we say it, there are points in our lives when we are faced with certain situations where the only viable option to get out of it is to lie. Lies may be categorized, but whether it’s a good lie or a bad lie, it’s still a lie. Throughout her essay, “The Ways We Lie”, Stephanie Ericsson explores and exploits different kinds of lies we may use in our daily lives.
Lying is a common habit that everyone has had experiences with. I have lied and have been lied to numerous times. Everyone has. However, not everyone exposed to a certain lie is aware of it’s true power. In her essay “The Ways We Lie”, Stephanie Ericsson criticizes our bad habit of lying. She explains many different types of lies and even gives examples to show how harmful they can be as “our acceptance of lies becomes a cultural cancer that eventually shrouds and reorders reality until moral garbage becomes invisible to us as water is to a fish” (128).
“...ok to lie to avoid hurting someone’s feelings.” The people who believe lying is justified, usually say it’s ok to not tell the truth to cover someone’s feelings or to keep someone from being hurt mentally and/or physically. However in the long run, they may think it’s for the better but are still blatantly lying and could possibly cause even more damage than intended. “Apparently even white lies are acceptable, even necessary.” Everyone tells a white lie here and there, and if they’re lucky it won’t affect anyone, but why should it be risked? Just because we color code a lie doesn’t makes it kind of “ok.” Do we say a white lie is ok, and a yellow lie is bad, and a red lie is unacceptable?o, because a lie is lie in the end, whether is considered a “white lie” or just a lie. A person might tell a white lie, but gets caught so has to cover it with another lie again and again, and in the end turns out not to be considered a white lie anymore. Others who say it’s justified, have a different opinion on lying, but as a question, why should we lie when honesty is an option?Everyday people hear others lie and see how bad the outcome it could be, however still deliberately lie. When a person lies to you they don’t respect you in a way others don’t see, or when a person calls you a liar they insult your integrity. However, in vise versa if the opposite person lies to them they are being egocentric. So in the
“The truth is always an insult or a joke, lies are generally tastier. We love them. The nature of lies is to please. Truth has no concern for anyone's comfort” Katherine Dunn perfectly describes what attracts us to lies from a quote in her book Geek Love. Most people lie to help themselves make it through day to day life. If people lie all the time, can all that lying really have an immense effect? Delays for telling the truth is not always a bad thing. While some lies are more helpful to some people more than others. Lies can make people seem untrustworthy, although lies help protect innocence, maintain self-esteem, and prevent harm from yourself or others.
Growing up, my mom always taught me to always tell the truth, one of the first times that I can remember this was really stressed to me is when I was just a young boy. At the time I was a trouble maker and would always altercate the truth to save myself from getting in trouble. I thought that this was the most ingenious thing because I could get away with anything by just telling these little “white lies”. In history these small lies can make huge impacts on the path that we take to move forward. For example, a native American figure in history that went by the name Acorn Whistler victimized others by lying and finally fell victim to it himself. Now Is lying just something we as humans do to get what we want or is there a deeper ethos behind
Every once in a while an opportunity to tell a little white lie presents itself, that's life. Let's be clear though, a white lie hurts no one and intends no malice. If you consider yourself a terrible liar, look to Professor Brady for some inspiration and helpful lessons.
The story starts with a woman trying to manage her busy life; struggling to meet all the demands of the day, such as; making it to a business meeting on time, paying bills, keeping up with her daughter, etc. She tells a few lies along the way without it having any effect on her conscience. The author points out how lying is almost impossible not to do; whether it be for good intentions, it is "nearly impossible" (Ericsson 359). Further into the story, the author states that there are a number of ways we lie and spends the rest of the story explaining the different types of lies that most of us can relate to.
I think that the author is trying to tell us that if you have good intentions society will not hold the lies against you quite as much as society will hold it against the evil villains. I think that half-truths are ok when you are not hurting anybody and you are not being vindictive. People who contorts the truths or twist them is what makes a person evil. How many shades of the truth are there? Obi-Wan lied to Luke and tricked him to join the force and it pushes Luke to almost the brink of death, where Luke can only fix the betrayal by ending his life.
Lying the one form of communication that is the untruth expressed to be the truth. Immanuel Kant states that lying is morally wrong in all possible ways. His hatred for lying has made him “just assumed that anyone who lied would be operating with a maxim like this: tell a lie so as to gain some benefit.”(Landau,pp.171) This is true for a vast number of people, they will lie in order to gain a certain benefit from the lie rather than the truth. It is similar to if you play a game of truth or dare, some rather pick a dare because it would release them from having to tell the truth. However, those who do pick truth still have a chance to lie to cover up the absolute truth.People lie in order to cover who they truly are. Even if you lie to benefit someone or something else, it would not matter to Kant because he does not care for the consequences. If you lie but have a good intention it is not the same for Kant, he would argue that you still lied no matter the consequence that a lie is a lie. “ While lying, we accuse others for not being transparent. While being hypocrites ourselves, we expect others to be sincere.” (Dehghani,Ethics) We know how it feels to be lied to by a person, so in order to not have the feeling returned, we hope the person will be truthful. We rather be surrounded by truthful people constantly despite all the lies that some people tell. No
These white lies are often overlooked and shrugged at, when people should actually be more cautious because it can be effortless to tell a lie or not say the truth. Telling the truth may hurt someone, but you will be respected more for your honesty and have a chance to resolve an issue without having your character
Poetry is a reduced dialect that communicates complex emotions. To comprehend the numerous implications of a ballad, perusers must analyze its words and expressing from the points of view of beat, sound, pictures, clear importance, and suggested meaning. Perusers then need to sort out reactions to the verse into a consistent, point-by-point clarification. Poetry utilizes structures and traditions to propose differential translation to words, or to summon emotive reactions. Gadgets, for example, sound similarity, similar sounding word usage, likeness in sound and cadence are at times used to accomplish musical or incantatory impacts.
Bernard Roth, a Professor at the d. school in California, has an impressively valid outlook as to why all reasons given are bullshit. Roth provides numerous examples of people who use regularly use excuses to manage everyday life; however, he also plays the devil’s advocate when stating that excuses may help you in the current situation but will it assist you at all in the long run? In the second chapter of his book, Roth classifies the use of excuses into several categories; ethically, logically, and emotionally. Although I understand Roth’s beliefs, there are multiple areas I fundamentally disagree with. Such as, some excuses must be explained no matter what the circumstances were since the reasoning is important. Roth would rebuttal by saying reasons have no meaning which in turn goes back to having no excuses. Utilizing an abundance of forms of thinking, is Roth’s strategy when emphasizing his point. He explains to every student the three possible rationalizations for excuses. Once again, he suggests every excuse is bullshit, and has no place in an individual’s life. Excuses ultimately hamper an individual’s ability to reach for his or her dreams. Bernard Roth, author of, “The Achievement Habit, stop wishing, start doing and take control of your life” effectively uses Aristotle’s rhetorical triangle in chapter two, his argument contains ethos, pathos, and logos to authenticate the thought that the reasons are bullshit.
