Old Man Warner is the oldest person in the town and have been a part of the lottery for seventy-seven years. He is the only one that strongly believes that the lottery is a good thing and they should never stop doing it. Old Man Warner says, “[There] used to be a saying about ‘Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.’ First thing you know, we’d all be eating stewed chickweed and acorns.” (52) Old Man Warner talks about how the lottery correlates to the presence of more corn crops, and he strongly states that without the lottery, they would be eating chickweed and acorns. This is probably the original reason for why they started the lottery, it was to have good crops. Old Man Warner is the only one who truly cares about the lottery, the other villagers just do it to follow their tradition. Old Man Warner thinks that “nothing’s good enough for [the people who have stopped the tradition of the lottery.]” (52) He strongly opposes the idea of not having the lottery and he thinks that the people who have stopped it are out of their minds.

The author does not use much emotion in the writing to show how the barbaric act that is going on is look at as normal. The contrast of this story begins almost immediately, and can be found throughout the remainder of it. The story begins harmlessly, on June 27th, which is described as clear and sunny. The children are on summer vacation from school, the grass is green, the flowers are blooming, all things that invoke more hope of a positive story. The townspeople are all congregating for the lottery, where they will stone someone to death, in the place where they also host square dances and Halloween activities, as though it is a spot reserved for fun. Mrs. Hutchinson arrives late, as she “Clean forgot what day it was” (Lawn, P.257) and “then I remembered it was the twenty-seventh and came a-running” (Lawn, P.258), and then she laughs softly with Mrs. Delacroix, showing that Mrs. Hutchinson would likely participate in stoning the winner of the lottery, even though she later screams “It isn’t fair, it isn’t right” (Lawn, P.263).

For instance, this means that the immorality of the village is so severe that the antagonist is not just one person but society itself. How do you think the villagers feel when their children were caught up in this senseless tradition by collecting stones? It is obvious that the villagers were following tradition that was done every year. “What about allowing a child to be a child?” For example; playing with toy cars and trucks, coloring books and Barbie’s, or getting push by their parents on a swing at a park. Children should not be allowed to partake in an event so gruesome and violent or seen raising anything to aggressively hurt an adult.

It begins, "clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green." The setting throughout The Lottery creates a sense of peacefulness and tranquility, while portraying a typical town on a normal summer day.

Shirley Jackson is to be considered one of the best authors of the 1900’s. Her style of writing reeled in readers from all different ages. She can be creepy, hilarious, and inspiring to the eyes that see her words. In Shirley Jackson’s short story, The Lottery, she keeps the reader on the edge of their seat wanting to continue reading beyond the final word. She uses literary devices to shape her story to grab her readers attention all throughout the story. By using these literary devices, Shirley Jackson shows off her dark and twisted side as well as her fantastic writing style to emphasize why she is one of the writers of her generation.

Traditions are widespread among many different people and cultures; It is an explanation for acting without thinking. Not all traditions are a good thing, though, and blindly following them can lead to harsh consequences. The villagers in a small town in “The Lottery” gather together annually to participate in this tradition, where one person in the town is randomly chosen in a drawing to be violently stoned to death by citizens. It has been around for seventy-seven years and everyone partakes in it. People always attend, showing the importance of tradition amongst the society. However, in the short story, “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson uses many literary devices to show that traditions are not always meant to be followed.

Despite their differences in their approach to characterization, both Joyce Carol Oates and Shirley Jackson managed to craft haunting short stories, whose characters quickly bond to your brain before they are quickly ripped away.

In “The Lottery”, Shirley Jackson uses the death of Tessie Hutchison to show how the ideas of the Witch Trails still affects the rituals of a 20th century town. Jackson uses the small towns ritual and the death of a local woman to show how the ideas of the witch trails still affect modern communities, and how people are willing to blindly follow those of authority, no matter the consequence. Even though there is no mention of witches or the Witch Trails, there is enough background information on Jackson to provide sufficient evidence to assume that she based some of this story off the trails.

In both stories, the innocent characters were fighting death at the hands of someone who found the idea of killing another human being to be a game. In “The Lottery” the game of death consumed an innocent life solely because a few individuals founded a tradition; and in “The Most Dangerous Game” the game of death consumed an innocent life solely because one person thought it was merely entertaining. Both authors portrayed the antagonist as friendly, warm and welcoming. In the Lottery, the antagonists were the families whom participated in the drawing of a name that lead to the stoning of another family member (which may or may not be their own family member). In “The Most Dangerous Game” the antagonist was a well-off general who opened his luxurious home to guests who have gone astray from their original destination. Death is the main theme of both short stories and both authors portrayed this dark and dreary idea as a game the characters are playing.

How would you feel if you lived in a country where you could not speak your mind? Imagine your friend speaking out saying whatever the government is doing is wrong. And the next day your friend is killed because of his or her actions. In some countries like North Korea this will actually happen to someone. The government has too much power. There should be something that can mediate what the government can and cannot do. In Shirley Jackson, “The Lottery”, the author is trying to explain to the reader about society and more importantly government, and how much power they have on everyone’s life. “Every group feels strong, once it has found a scapegoat” (Mignon McLaughlin, 1913). A scapegoat is someone who is blamed for all the faults and corruptions that others have committed. In history, there are lots of scapegoat examples, the most popular being; Jesus Christ and the Jews in the Second World War. In the short story “The Lottery”, Shirley Jackson used persecution and tradition to demonstrate how scapegoating justified unfair killing. Both of these aspects relate to the World War that preceded only a couple years before the story was written. The persecution was blind and done once a year as a tradition that everyone expected to happen.
